An open letter to Ed Stefanski (or how to fix the Sixers experience)

Dear Ed,

Long time fan, first time season ticket holder here.  I know you’ve got a lot of problems on your plate right now: the Sixers have been freefalling since the All-Star Break, your prize free agent acquisition (and $80M man) is sitting in street clothes, the team can’t play perimeter defense with under 30 seconds left, and the arena is half-empty (not half-full!) on most nights.

Now, I can’t help you with any of the first three issues (although I’m pretty sure trotting out Willie “9ppg” Green as our starting 2 guard isn’t helping anyone), but perhaps I can shed a little light on why nobody wants to go to the Sixers games.  And while winning would fix everything, in lieu of winning, perhaps you can make the in-person experience just a little better so I don’t regret buying season tickets this year or have to beg someone to go with me on certain nights.

Can a Rose grow in the Windy City

Commissioner David Stern casually walks up to the microphone and announces “With the Number 1 pick in the 2008-09 draft, the Bull pick Derrick Rose, from the Memphis Tigers.”

An Open Letter to Sonics Fans

By Scott Gilmour

Dear Seattle;

First off, we would like to officially welcome you to our hell. You see, our city is a charter member of that small fraternity of places that know what it’s like to lose their team. Actually, let us rephrase that: have their team ripped away from them under the watchful eye of a short, New York-living commissioner with a law degree. More than that, we felt that we should pull you aside for a man-to-man, city-to-city talk. The kind of talk that almost certainly has to take place in an old bar over a tall pint of beer.

The NBA’s Best Kept Secret

Seven years ago, a scrawny, 19 year old Frenchman was selected with the final pick of the first round of the NBA Draft. The consensus reaction was simply one of confusion with some questions followed by a quick progression, completely dismissing it as yet another insignificant foreign gamble.

The Name Game: What to Name The Team Formerly Known as the Sonics

Yesterday the verdict came in. The city of Seattle needed a payoff to allow the team to move to Oklahoma City. For $45 million up front and possibly $30 million later on the Seattle Sonics are no more. The previous owner is suing current owner Clay Bennett, saying he broke an agreement between the two to “make an honest effort” to work out a deal with the city of Seattle. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt. If the previous owner wanted the team to stay in Seattle he would have sold the team to someone not from Oklahoma City. Since there is no deal in writing this will be thrown out of court and Oklahoma City will enjoy NBA basketball in 2009.

Now as part of the agreement between Seattle and Bennett the green and white colors and the “Sonics” will stay in Seattle. So what should they name this “new” team?

The Sonics Are Gone…On Vacation?

By David J. Cohen

The Sonics were just sold by the city of Seattle for $75 million. Seattle fans are devastated about the loss of their 41 year long basketball stronghold. Many NBA experts and reporters will tell you Seattle is a basketball town that loves their Sonics. And while attendance was among the worst in the NBA last year they were packing the house competitively in most years before that. There was even an organization formed, called Save Our Sonics, that ultimately failed in its efforts to keep the team in Seattle. It’s been a great run but now Sonics fans will forever go sleepless in Seattle.

Or will they?

2008 NBA Draft Grades: The Nerds- The Dropouts- And Everyone In Between

By David J. Cohen

Last night the draft proved to be as interesting as advertised. The mega deals didn’t go down during the draft but a mega move did take place afterwards. Now on to the report cards:

The Guru’s 2008 NBA Draft Review

Team By Team Breakdown of Draft Picks

After year two of the NBA’s “one-and-done” experiment, a new crop of kids will be collecting millions of dollars, having their name plastered across ugly overpriced shoes and either joining the list of draft busts or draft steals.  Though this draft wasn’t as deep as drafts past, it still had a lot of quality players available.  But, as they always do, NBA GM’s and big wigs will find a way to screw up the future of their franchise.

Here’s a report card of the winners and losers from Thursday night.

Is Jackson’s Coaching Legacy Tainted?

The Basketball Universe has been inclined to see Phil Jackson’s NBA coaching career as one of, if not the, greatest in NBA History. Fortunately, it just isn’t so. Although it may seem like he has an impeccable coaching philosophy that continuously leads his teams to the game’s grandest stage, the shroud of luck falls on to his legacy, and I am proud to say that I will be the one to make sense of it all!
