Cricket World Cup: Luke Wright may be England’s best choice

Disappointment may come before England in the dictionary, but at World Cups, they seem to be side-by-side. Regardless the sport, England are expected to fail to reach expectations. For Pete’s sake, even in darts, a sport where England routinely have every highly-ranked player not named Raymond van Barneveld, England crashed out to minnows Spain at last year’s inaugural World Cup.

And crash out they will in cricket if they cannot overcome a resurgent West Indies XI in the finest form they’ve been in some years.

Obliged to the Obligation

“And for that I found myself in a stupor of wonderment as I pondered the situation of the family tradition gone terribly wrong.”

Let’s face it. Being a fan in New England for the past six or seven years hasn’t really brought on feelings of bereavement. Around these parts, the chatter among us usually consists of where we are watching the big game and what time everyone is going to the parade in Boston after another championship is clinched by the illustrious sports town.
Now, hold on a second. Let me get back to where the “where we are watching the game” part. To some, the big game is code-word for bars; at least the people I know. It doesn’t matter that the experience of another New England victory (besides Super Bowl XLII…still can not rid the vomit taste from my mouth) will more than likely end up in severe loss of funds due to dollar drafts which always grow into rounds of expensive drinks; bruised and/or broken extremities; and the possibly of some dramatic type of run-in with the law enforcement. To summarize: they never get to see the actual game and miss out on history.

Italy-Serbia Fiasco: UEFA punishes Slovenia, Estonia, N. Ireland, Faroe Islands

UEFA’s decision to award Italy with a 3-0 win is not fair no matter how you look at it, and I don’t care what Serbia think.

Serbian fans crossed the line; their actions were against the better interest of sport, and the punishment that Serbia received is just. Serbia deserves to forfeit the match and to have to play its next two home fixtures behind closed doors.

The actions of the supporters were disgusting.

Italy did not come away unscathed, as they were fined 100,000 euros for their security failing to contain the rowdy Serbian supporters.

But no matter what Serbia did, Italy does not deserve a 3-0 win, not so long as this competition is supposed to be fair for Slovenia, Estonia, Northern Ireland, and the Faroe Islands, the other four national teams in Group C.

Curt Schilling’s Rhode Island Hoodwink

By Diane M. Grassi

Curt Montague Schilling, has never been one to duck controversy nor a good game of old-fashioned hard ball.

In fact, in the latter part of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career as a starting pitcher, who many experts believe will be an easy entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Schilling became a lightning rod for controversy.

Cleveland’s Got Nothin’ On Me

Hi, my name is JDWC and I’m addicted to sports. I was hooked from birth, because my father is an addict too. Like him, my drugs of choice are the Dodgers, the 49ers and the Oakland A’s. But, like most addicts and sons, I pledged to be better, to be more. So I surpassed my father…I became a basketball fan and chose the most depressing depressant known to man: the Golden State Warriors. The high school years were a brief, four-step recovery program. I graduated from the program in 2007, proclaimed clean and cured!

Alas, tragedy struck again. I was thrust into the real world and sent up to Pullman, WA to educate myself in the arts of Journalism and Creative Writing. From the first time I tasted Washington State University football, I was hooked again. Years passed and I drifted back into my addictive haze. Over the last week, I have hit rock bottom. If only I had chosen St. Louis. New York. Boston. Even Seattle. Instead, I got what I deserved. My teams have taken years from my life I will never get back. This is the uncut, untold story of my struggles:

After Week 2: What We Know and What We Think We Know

Ahhhhhhhhhhh. We can finally relax knowing the calming feeling of our College Football season is with us. It’s like our pillow, very comforting, even more so if you reside in or around the Tuscaloosa or Columbus area and very UN-comforting if you’re in the booming Metropolis of Boise (we’ll get to that later.) These past two weeks have literally taught us nothing and at the same time taught us nothing; wait. Didn’t I already say that? It sounds funny but we have honestly learned nothing while getting Xed and Oed at the same time like we’re on Rex Ryan’s JV squad from Hard Knocks. I feel like I should be ranting a testimonial into the camera (looking left and right……DAMN! No camera.) Oh well. We’ll talk NFL in another column, right now we’re talking about CFB…..I mean Hell, I’m 40! I’m a MAN! Let’s get to it.

“THE BEST SINCE HUGO SANCHEZ THEY’VE HAD…”

IN THAT COUNTRY.”- FA COMMUNITY SHIELD BROADCAST, AUGUST 08th 2010.

It’s no small boots to fill. After all, FIFA named Hugo Sanchez as the best Mexican player of all time, and included him in the FIFA 100, a list of the best 100 players in the game’s history. So, how did a young man who sits in the shadow of two generations of football players suddenly become the brightest star, the hope of a nation to show England and by extension the world that Mexico can be a competitive player in international soccer and bring about players who are just as good as any on an international level?

U.S. Ban on Online Gambling On the Way Out?

By Diane M. Grassi

When it comes to gambling, there has never been a shortage of opinion amongst the masses. Either people favor it or they feel strongly that it accompanies some of society’s more depraved behaviors, along with attracting crime, and is a negative temptation for our youth.
