Smarty Jones? F Smarty Jones!

I’ll let you in on a little media myth. No one in Philly really cares about Smarty Jones.  The reports of big “Smarty Parties” on Saturday are largely…how do you say… bullshit.  There hasn’t been a sporting event more overhyped and less anticipated since NBC’s Olympics Triplecast.

It’s completely out of control.  The Philly Daily News has a weblog supposedly written by the horse himself.  Nice gimmick.  Nobody cares.  Schoolchildren are writing letters to Smarty.  Cute.  Nobody cares.  Catherine the Great rose from the dead to meet Smarty.  Sick.  Nobody cares.

Who is America’s Team?

Well, would you look at this poll from ESPN.com.  Exactly the type of poll that drives me nuts.  I had no idea that the term “America’s Team” meant the most hated team in America.  All they had to do was add in Duke basketball and the Braves and this list is complete.

Top 22 MCs

I was reading through the Sportscolumn archives when I stumbled upon this short column about the Top 22 MCs of all time.  This was originally posted a year ago right around this time.  (The Dead Zone – when nothing is going on in sports.)  Top X lists are always good for a debate.  Here’s the list and my opinion:

Women We Love

One of the most popular parts of SC.com is the Women We Love.  Sure I stole this from Esquire magazine but hell, they really are women we love right?  Unless of course you’re gay.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Here’s your chance you comment on the women we already have and suggest any new ones.

Welcome to the Revolution!

Why am I calling this The Revolution?  Because Sportscolumn.com was built to tear down all the pre-established rules of what sports journalism should be.  As an avid (and rabid) sports fan, I just can’t get enough.  I love the commentary. I love the highlights.  I love the debates on sports talk radio.  But what bothered me was that the people who deliver the commentary, who direct the talk on sports radio, who write all the columns we read, seldom know any more than die-hard knowledgeable fans.   In fact they’re often just flat out wrong.

The Revolution doesn’t want to hear anymore from “professional” columnists who seem intent on only tallying up word counts and writing columns so ludicrous as to beg to be emailed around in disbelief.  Sportscolumn knows that there are thousands of “amateur” sportswriters out there that could build a better following than any of these nationally known hacks.

We Need a Revolution!

[originally posted April 27, 2004]

This column is going to sound like marketing copy (and trust me, I’m no marketer) but we need some fresh blood in sports journalism. I’ve been working on Sportscolumn 2.0 for a little bit of time now. It’s slow going but that’s what happens when you have no deadline and you actually have a full time job. (This is also my excuse for not having posted anything in 3 weeks.)

And this is why I love hockey!

(originaly posted 2/12/2004)

At any point in a hockey game, a real brawl can break out. And by real brawl, I’m not talking about the no real damage done of pushing and shoving in football or the big haymakers intended to miss of basketball. Strangely enough, baseball is the closest to hockey in terms of real fighting.

The Hoagie Report

(originally posted February 05, 2004)

I was hoping for some positive Philly sports news after the Super Bowl but it just ain’t happening. The Sixers are showing “no heart”, the Flyers don’t have a goalie (one is out with a knee injury, the other is hanging out with David Duval.) and the Phillies haven’t even reported yet. It’s a desperate day in my life when I’m anxiously awaiting a baseball season.

They Get You Every Time

(originally posted 12/24/2003)

This title could be about so many things. The first thing that comes to mind is the bait and switch that some Philly teams seem to do around championship time… BUT… this is the holidays so I’ll refrain from any negative comments about my beloved Philly teams. Next week is fair game though.

Who wants to Sex Eustachy?

(originally posted 4/29/2003)

Am I the only one who has no problem with this? This makes ESPN’s front page? Knickerbocker, please!
