2009 NFL Week 4 Picks and Podcast

We’re at the quarter pole of the season and there are still a ton of questions surrounding most teams. Chances are that the 0-3 teams are just playing out the string (odds against them making the playoffs are astronomical), we have to wonder which 3-0 teams are for real and which ones are just lucky recipients of an easy early schedule. This week is the beginning of bye weeks in the NFL so we have 14 games to examine. The featured games this week are Ravens @ Patriots, Jets @ Saints, Cowboys @ Broncos, and Packers @ Vikings.

2009 AFC Preview – The Once and Future King

Consider this my August article.  To paraphrase Jimmy Buffett, it must be August 31 somewhere.

My colleague Trevor Freeman broke down the NFC this past weekend and mentioned how baseball has become “unwatchable” for him.  Alas, unlike this sad soul, I am still watching the Sox on a nightly basis, and I generally hate watching preseason football, so it usually takes me a little while to mentally adjust to football.  Watching preseason football, to me, has always seemed like watching someone else play blackjack—sure it can be entertaining, and you can make comments about the play, but it’s no fun unless it’s real.

Can McNabb handle inevitable calls for Vick?

A couple of weeks ago, while we were broadcasting Poor Man’s PTI, RJ called in and informed me that the Eagles had just signed Michael Vick.  Like the rest of football America, I was shocked and dumbfounded.   Not because I had any objection to Michael Vick being back in the NFL but because I had no idea what the Eagles wanted Michael Vick on the team for.

The only time I’ve been confident in an NFC Championship game was when the Eagles took on the Atlanta Falcons.  There was no way that Michael Vick, even with his considerable athletic skills, could read and react to the defense that Jim Johnson was going to throw at him.  Rarely am I that correct on anything.

The problem with Vick then is the problem with Vick now — he’s just not a very good quarterback.

Breaking Down The NFC

Is it just me or is baseball borderline unwatchable at this point?  I can honestly say that I haven’t watched a full nine-inning game since May.  Why do I bring this up?  Because for the last three months, my sports plate has consisted of a combination of Olympic sports, English Premier League/Gold Cup Soccer and UFC.  Let’s just say, I have watched more episodes of UFC Unleashed on Spike than should be allowed by law.

I’m writing about Brett Favre because I want to?

I promised myself last summer that I was not going to write about Brett Favre. I did.

It’s not that I thought I’d want to write about Brett Favre. The only other time I even sort-of wrote about him wasn’t really about him; it was about ESPN’s media stalk-gala into his every inaction after he asked Roger Goodell for reinstatement papers but did not sign them last summer. And I was happy that I did not care.

But now? Now I care. Because now it’s personal.

Derrick Thomas a Hall of Famer for his work off the field, too

Let me level with you: I don’t know how to start this article. I don’t. I’ve thought about it all week, and you know, I just could not figure it out. Maybe I’m just not good enough at what I do, or maybe I’m just not good enough yet, either way, I couldn’t figure it out.

How do you capsule in 1,000 words a life that has reached out beyond words and touched lives totaling 1,000 times that many words? How do you do that without risking understating his impact or, even worse, offending? It’s not something we as journalists want to do, but have to do. But enough about me. Onto you.
