When the lights went out for the last time in Dillon, American television got a little darker.

Tribute

I was born the oldest of two kids, five years older than my sister, Audrey. Within weeks of my birth, my mother and I moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where my dad was stationed in the Army as a paratrooper in the 82d Airborne Division, also called the All-American Division.

Vick-timized

Remember in 2002, Michael Vick’s first full season as the Falcon’s starter, when he beat the Minnesota Vikings in overtime after scampering 46 yards for the score. Yeah, me too. I remember watching it on Sports Center again and again. It was like poetry in motion watching the Falcon’s star run left and right breaking tackles at will in route to his game winning touchdown.
Vick is questionably the most exciting player we have in the present day NFL. When he laces them up, anything can happen, and usually will. But, is there a sadistic, dog fighter underneath the play making Falcon star?

The Great Mistake

The 2007 NFL football season is approaching fast, and that can only mean one thing. Fantasy Football is back. It is a life long tradition of many football fanatics to gather at a particular facility, get completely drunk, and pick football players that surely will be dancing in the end zone on numerous occasions this year and help bring home some hardware to the family household.

Something Old And Something New

by Trevor Freeman

Two men.  One a giant in his sport and the other a literal giant had news that seemed to fly under sport’s radar last week.  It is surprising considering the two names involved.  However their news has the potential to impact the sports scene in 2008.  For David Beckham being asked to rejoin England and Roy Hibbert deciding to rejoin the Georgetown Hoyas means there could be a little more sizzle on each side when they show up for America and Europe’s version of the Madness.

Biased towards Bias – What’s with those NBA Refs?

The big non-playoff news in the NBA yesterday was the announcement that there may be a racial bias in how NBA officials referee games. Naturally, the minute that the words “race,” “bias,” and “sports” hit the front page of the New York Times, the sports media collectively had an orgasm at the thought of a juicy racial scandal to discuss. In short, the Times’ piece describes an upcoming study by a University of Pennsylvania professor which points to a racial disparity in fouls called during NBA games.

A Sports Medley…..

by Trevor Freeman

Ever since March Madness ended, we as a sports nation have been in a funk. It was a long couple of weeks, but we are snapping out of it in a big way with the NFL Draft on the horizon and the NBA playoffs heating up. Baseball is in full swing. I know I am pretty pumped that my Athletics have gotten out of the gate at 10-9 (generally my A’s like to start 2-17 and 11 games out of first). With all this going on, I sat down and tried to compose an article on a number of topics. However, I once again ran into a brick wall at every turn. Yes, writer’s block was affecting me and there was only one way to snap out of. Without further ado, here is our fourth “Sports Medley”.

Crazy sports fans are a ‘Must See’ at sporting events

Look around you at sporting event and you might be surprised at what you see. Yes, there is that hot guy in the stands and he has his shirt off, but what the hell is all over his chest? And more importantly, why did he just spill beer all over you and not even offer to help clean you up?

Man on a Rant: Breakup in the Bronx- A Norv for All Seasons- and Pippen’s Pipe Dream

I never thought I’d find myself writing these words.  I thought they’d go the distance.  I thought they were stronger than this… stronger than Andre and Steffi, stronger then Mia and Nomar.  And yet, this President’s Day weekend, the earth-shattering news broke:  Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter are no longer best friends forever.  You read that correctly, folks – A-Rod and Jeter are BFFs no more.  How will we go on?  How will we cope?  Can the Yankees even bring themselves to compete in light of the biggest of big chills?

Right.

A Sports Medley…….The Thanksgiving Edition

by Trevor Freeman

Everybody takes the Friday after Thanksgiving off from work.  To me, that is just a waste of a vacation day.  You see, no work actually gets done on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so you might as well just show up and sit like a corpse in your seat until the powers that be let you out early.  PLUS, you save the vacation day which can now be dropped at a time when there is a lot going on.  Just trust me on this.

While killing some time at work and with a pile of thoughts floating around in my head, it is time to come with my third Sports Medley.  We shall dub this version the “The Thanksgiving Special”…
