The Real NFL Draft Grades

I’m grading the only way the NFL draft should be graded: based on the quality of the player’s name. As you will see, there is absolutely no bias in these ratings whatsoever.

2009 NFL Draft preview

This weekend marks the yearly tradition of men sitting around for hours on end, throwing back beers, eating crappy food, and watching what could be called the most repetitive and mundane sports coverage of the year… and loving every minute of it!

That’s right, the NFL draft is upon us.  So prepare yourselves for a full day of hearing about the linebacker who is “an absolute beast,” the tackle with a “tremendous upside,” and the quarterback that teams are “truly in love with.”  And if there are no big trades or shocking picks, who cares?  At least you’ll enjoy seeing some crazy suits and watching the pained look on a prospect’s face as he pretends to be excited to join that team.

Pat White is an NFL quarterback

In what was arguably the best bowl game of the season in college football, West Virginia escaped North Carolina with a 31-30 victory to capture the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. and spoiled what was basically the Tar Heel fans’ home game.

Senior quarterback Pat White threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alric Arnett midway through the fourth quarter and the victory was sealed for the Mountaineers by a Pat Lazear interception. White eclipsed his previous highest passing yards of 222 yards against Louisville in 2006 with an astonishing 332 yards and completing 26 of 32 passes as well as adding three touchdowns to the cause.

Making Sense of the Mock Drafts

With so many people making their own mock drafts this year, I felt it might be more worthwhile to make a comparison of different versions including some bloggers and paid journalists.

I started by making a Google search and the first hits were actually bloggers followed by some acknowledged NFL journalists from different media sources. Although the results might be affected by the timing of the actual updates, I have tried to keep this in mind in my analysis and have included the last update in the table.

The problem with making a mock draft is that many times the picks are traded away and the teams that take over the slot might have different needs. This can completely change the whole draft order. Almost all those making their selections seemed concerned with this and it means any guessing has to be taken with a grain of salt.

With all this in mind, the following is my analysis of the coming draft based on the input of 6 different mocks prepared during the month of February. It will be possible for a player to be a consensus pick more than once.
