Reflecting on What I Learned

I’m very glad that I decided to wait and hold off on writing the “end of the NBA season, start of the playoffs, MVP award” article.  The internet and newspapers are full of predictions for the playoffs, who deserves the MVP, and all that other hogwash.  I figured I would wait and see how things panned out with the first round of the playoffs and take a little time to reflect on what I have learned about professional basketball.  This sport is both cruel and beautiful.  These playoffs have sent me on an emotional roller coaster ride.  Up and down.  Jubilation and depression.  Excitement and boredom. Shock and predictability.  I don’t know if I have ever been this enthralled in a basketball postseason in the AJ era (After Jordan).  It is only fitting though that the top 3 MVP candidates this season have provided the most intrigue in the playoffs.  Kobe vs. Nash, and LeBron making us all witnesses.  The enticement of a Hallway series between the Clippers and the Lakers (how many premature articles did you read?).  LeBron and Gilbert playing the “anything you can do I can do better” game for a whole series.  A fantastic series so far from the Clippers and Suns in Round 2. Finally, the Cavs…I repeat…the Cavs giving the Pistons fits right now… (Deep breath)…here we go.

Pitcher’s Renaissance

Swing.  Miss.  Caught looking.  Why, all of a sudden, are veteran pitchers making more headlines than younger players?  Why can’t anyone seem to hit consistently off of pitchers who have been in the majors for at least ten, fifteen years, even close to twenty years?  And why does it seem that certain pitchers we were ready to ride off a year ago are posting the lowest earned run averages, highest strikeouts and most wins so far this season?  Getting older means reinvention, and perhaps, renaissance.

Do The Bonds Boogie

You put your left arm in, you take your left arm out, you put your left arm in, and shake it all about, twist the needle in and pour all the juice out, that’s what the Bonds Boogie’s all about.

I have written a few articles for this web site and some off-line, but none have ever slandered any player or team throughout the MLB, now and in the past.  In an article I posted a few weeks ago, I proclaimed how Bonds will forever be an “ageless icon, no matter how many pills he pops”, but I regret to inform a direct feeling of remorse towards that statement.  After witnessing his chase for Ruth, there have been a few conclusions brought to my attention, and not just the fact that this week has been the most boring week of Bonds/Baseball coverage EVER!  It’s the fact that we are watching a seemingly deceiving cheater chase down one of the most prestigious records in sports, held by on my account, the greatest baseball player ever.  It has got to stop.  “Should we take the record away if Bonds gets it?”  “Should we allow him to be put into the record books?”  All pay attention to what this article entails.  This is not a direct boast against steroids even though it has penetrated Sports forever, but it is to recognize Bonds as a “timed icon” that drains baseball of it’s credible past every single time he interrupts Sports Center so they can bring coverage of him striking out.

Could Albert Pujols at only age 26- already be considered the greatest hitter ever?

Hey, hey, it’s Big Albert Pujols. The man-child who’s quickly becoming perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter baseball has ever seen. Already Pujols set a mark for most home runs in April with 14. At his current pace, he’ll hit 90 home runs, have 207 RBI, hit a healthy .345 with whopping .908 slugging percentage and walk 181 times. The scary thing about all of this is that he is only 26 years young.

A Sports Medley

by Trevor Freeman

Have you ever had a bad case of writer’s block?  So much so, that it was beginning to affect your overall personality?  All day Sunday I was trying to write a good sports article.  I wrote a bunch of first paragraphs on a variety of topics but could never close the deal.  I was the “buzzed” guy at the bar at 1:00 A.M. who had chatted with five different women during the night, but hadn’t made his move on one and now was desperately trying to salvage some poontang.

The Life

It would be such a great life to be able to wake up every morning and to know that you are being paid to play a sport that you absolutely love.  It would be great to just have the opportunity to play the sport you love before a national audience.  It would be great to get that adrenaline rush from a game winning shot or run.  It would be a great life playing a professional sport.

19 Simple Ways to Live the Life of a "Singleton"

By Rob LaBrie

While baseball (or football depending how you look at it) may be America’s national past time at the pro level, golf is becoming America’s “Every Man” game.  Ever since the emergence of Tiger Woods made golf cool again, people all over the country have been picking up the game.  I, myself, am an avid golfer.  I take my 10-handicap to my local golf course, Beaver Meadow, almost everyday during the summer.  There’s just something about being around good people, nature, and the relaxing atmosphere that makes the game irresistible.

Unfortunately, every once in a while you come across someone that nobody wants to play with.  Becoming one of these “Singletons” is actually very easy.  Just follow this simple advice and you won’t be playing with other humans for a long time.

MLB Power Rankings for May 11th- 2006

Some things never change. Griffey’s hurt. The Cubs are without Prior and Wood. Barry Bonds is still a jerk. The Yankees are atop the East, with the Royals, Rays, and Pirates dwelling in the basement.

But, there is hope. The Reds and Tigers are challenging for their division leads, and the Rockies have some young talent on the rise. Jimmy Rollins may have lost his hitting streak, but Edgar Renteria has started his own. And, the best thing of all… the increasing likelihood of a postseason free from the Tomahawk Chop.
