Coach of the Year voting missed the real best coach

Each year, I’m more and more convinced that the NFL’s Coach of the Year Award goes to the most improved team without regard to actual coaching ability.

As expected, the Coach of the Year Award came down to Tony Sparano of the Miami Dolphins and Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons, who took over teams with a combined five wins in 2007 and turned out a pair of 11-5 records.

As expected, the man who did the best job in football got absolutely none.

Sparano and Smith’s accomplishments aside, tell me how Gary Kubiak was not even a candidate? You want to know why? His team did not improve in the standings.

McCown deserves vote of confidence

Ever since Dan Marino retired, the Dolphins have been wading in mediocrity at the most important position in the game.  They went from the game manager Jay Fiedler, to Gus Frerotte, and then to has-beens like Dante Culpepper and Trent Green.  Now, in a muddled quarterback controversy, there are two young gunslingers, and one who hasn’t been given a fair shake since he entered the league in Josh McCown.

We already saw what John Beck brings to the table through five games and a measly 559 yards.  True, he was on the worst team in the league last year, and with very little weapons, but he simply did not perform like a guy should that is being called “the quarterback of the future”.

That’s why Bill Parcells signed McCown and drafted Henne, a Michigan product, like all other Michigan quarterback prospects-looks better than he probably is. Henne might have a shot at proving he’s the guy down the stretch, but realistically, it’d be nothing short of a large step back than to keep drafting quarterbacks and then switching them.  Parcells doesn’t want to leave it to the gods for two straight seasons like his competitor, the New York Jets, clearly plan on doing with Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington.

Sink or Swim

In week one of this NFL season, the Miami Dolphins took on the Washington Redskins in an interesting game that needed overtime to determine a winner. The Dolphins didn’t come out on top, obviously, but there was certainly hope for the near future. There was hope; please put emphasis on the word “was.”

Good Riddance Saban

When is it okay to lie?  When would it be okay to lie over and over and seem offended by questions asked that bother you because of your lies?  Well, I think the answer to both of those questions is NEVER.  Nick Saban should have followed morals that he has in his life and follow what would be the “right” thing to do and he would have not been looked at and seen as a jerk, traitor, liar, and words that I would never write or print

Daunte’s Inferno

by Matt Wells

The Indianapolis Colts.  The Cincinnati Bengals.  The Pittsburgh Steelers.  These were just some of the teams picked to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year.  All three picks make sense; every one of those teams went to the playoffs last year, with the Steelers winning it all.

Another team added in the mix of Super Bowl contenders prior to this season were the Miami Dolphins.  This was the trendy pick.  Many people chose the Dolphins to go all the way and Daunte Culpepper’s name was thrown out there as a potential MVP candidate.  The pieces were in place: Culpepper was the new QB, Ronnie Brown was still carrying the load out of the backfield, and Chris Chambers was still the top receiver on the team.  Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor still anchor the defense.

What’s Next for Ricky?

Ricky Williams was given another chance.  He played the second half of the 2005 NFL season, and he looked good in the public eye.  NFL fans were starting to come around once again.  Ricky was popular, at least for a while.

Now, Ricky has blown it again.

Dolphins’ QB woes continue

For Miami Dolphins fans who long for the glory days of Dan Marino, the suffering continues.

Gus Frerotte is the latest in a lengthening list of should-be backups who have somehow found themselves under center on a full-time basis for the Fins. Fielder, Huard, Griese, Feeley – it’s been a revolving door of quarterbacking mediocrity since Marino retired following the 1999 campaign.

The Dolphins Need to Clean Up

As I prepared and waited all year, starting from January of this year until September, I had excitement built for the 2004 football season.  Starting January and continuing through the summer months, I was very excited for my team and how they will perform this year because of some good pickups.  Then with one decision by one man, the season and the organization really took a downhill turn and it is rolling quickly down to the bottom as the season is moving along.  My excitement turned to worrying and then move after move helped improve that and built my hope high up until kickoff, but now as the season is three weeks in, the season is basically over because of bad moves in the off season having more to do with the front office and not as much to do with Ricky Williams leaving. The time to start cleaning up and getting rid of some bad parts is after this season, too bad that it’s a few too late.
