Darkness Descends Upon Football

The 2005 NFL regular season hasn’t even begun yet, and already the league is decimated by tragedy. The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive lineman Thomas Herrion collapsed and died in the locker room after a preseason game, Hurricane Katrina has left the New Orleans Saints homeless and hopeless, and a beloved legend is finally calling it quits.

An open letter to Duh Bears – Matt Waters

Dear Chicago Bears,

You’re killing me Bears. Just killing me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan, just an interested observer who has resorted to rubber necking at you’re distorted franchise.

Where did it all go wrong?

Remember back in 2001, heady days than, when Mike Brown was making miracle interceptions in overtime on a seemingly weekly basis and Jim Miller guided by his formidable beard was leading you to an amazing 13-3 season?

What the hell happened?

NFL Predictions 2006-Let The Truth Be Told

From the day the NFL season kicks off to the day of the Superbowl America is glued to their television on Sunday afternoons and nights. For people in Philadelphia, New England, San Diego, and other cities that have solid division contenders the worries don’t start until the Playoffs.  For the fans of teams in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit and other underachieving cities there is anticipation of a complete turnaround. Every year there is a surprise and this year will be no exception.

The Real QB Competition

By Jeremy Burnham

Everyone in their right mind knew that Tim Rattay should start over rookie Alex Smith. If you did not know that from the start, you sure found out after the first preseason game. And if you still had doubts after that, they were crushed after the second game. Even Coach Nolan seemed to finally get it, naming Rattay the starter.

The Santa Claus Effect in Sports

When I was young, the flight of free agency in major sports hadn’t quite taken off of the runway and although trades occurred, it seldom involved major stars. These days of course, it has become almost a sporting event in itself. Team sports such as football, basketball, and baseball stay in the headlines during the off-season with the barrage of free agency, trades, and all of the rumors that swirl around it. My questions is this; what kind of impact, if any, does this have on the young sports fans who cheer for their favorite player on their favorite team?

Gods Walking On Water – Matt Waters

Here was a man who had it all, a high nineties fastball and a knee buckling curve, a rubber arm and steel back bone, an intense glare with pristine perception, but most importantly the talent in reserve to move above the status of legend.

Here was a man who threw it all away and still recieved second chance after chance. A man who succumbed to temptation and betrayed himself. A man who looked in the mirror and mocked his gifts. A man who fell back on his accomplishments instead of elevating above them.

Here was a man who had the key to New York City only to open all the wrong doors. Here was a man whose tale spun from adventure to tragedy. Here is an example of the saddest thing in life, which is wasted potential.

Here is a human being.

Here was a man.

Preseason Rankings are for Dummies

While watching Oklahoma lose to the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University I was thinking to myself, “There is always one of these upsets in the first weekend of the season.” But two of these upsets? This weekend was a prime example of why there should be no preseason polls.

First, lets talk about the biggest upset: TCU over Oklahoma. Why are they ranked 7th in the nation before playing a game? That’s like a kid who gets a 1590 on his SAT’s and is expected to do great things at Harvard so he automatically draws the respect of all his professors. Except he starts to dabble in binge drinking and soon enough he is doing keg stands and playing in beer pong tournaments instead of going to class. God I miss college.

2005 AFC Predictions

With preseason play coming to a close, and the NFL season only one week away, it’s time to make largely unfounded but highly anticipated season predictions. Though I condemn the idea in principle, I could not resist predicting the records of each team. I acknowledge that quite a bit can change during the course of a season, so I do not expect these records to accurately predict so much as convey how I envision the relative strength of each team’s opening day roster. So, without further ado…
