THE NFL PLAYOFF RACE
With five weeks worth of games remaining in the NFL regular season, no team has clinched yet, but many of them are on the verge. Here is how I see the playoff race ending up:

I’ve revisited the power rankings that I posted back in July and have made quite a few changes to them. Here is my revised edition of power rankings:
There are some things about the 2005 NFL preseason that have made you cheer, and some that have made you absolutely cringe. Here are some of the best and worst performances so far in the first three weeks of the preseason:

Who is More Likely to Three-Peat: USC or New England?
By Adam Nelson
The last two coaches of the New England Patriots, Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick, have something else in common- they’re both trying to lead their respective teams (USC and New England) to a third straight championship. Both teams have dominated football over the past two seasons; the Patriots have gone 34-4 (including playoff games). Pete Carroll and his USC Trojans have lost only one game since 2003, and that was a three-point overtime loss at Cal….23 games ago. Both teams have a great chance to three-peat this season, but who is more likely to? Let’s look in-depth at both teams and who is standing in the way of them making history this year:

Drew Bennett of the Titans. Torry Holt of the Rams. Joe Horn of the Saints. Reggie Wayne of the Colts. Nate Burleson of the Vikings. All five of these wide receivers had nine or more touchdown grabs in 2004. What separates them from Terrell Owens, better known as “T.O.”? Well, T.O’s salary in 2004 ($9.16 million) is more than five million above the combined salary of the other five ($3.94 million). While the other five receivers are content with their contracts for this season and are not holding out for more money, T.O. is unhappy and is asking for more. Just doesn’t fit, does it?
On Saturday, amidst a raucous crowd in Tokyo, Japan, the Atlanta Falcons seemed to do everything that they possibly could to lose their game against the Indianapolis Colts.

2005 NFL Predictions
By Adam Nelson
Who will go from worst to first? Can Pittsburgh possibly win 14 or 15 games? Can the Patriots win a fourth title in five years? A lot of questions remain unanswered, but one thing is stuck in most fans’ minds- the dominance of New England the past four years. Although they should be a favorite to win it all again, they very likely won’t, and the absence of Tedy Bruschi will be a huge reason why. Here’s my predictions for how the standings will end. I may be far off, but this is how I see it:

Will New England make it four titles in five years? Will Philadelphia make it five straight NFC Championship appearances? Is “Big Ben” for real? A lot of questions remain to be answered concerning the 2005 NFL season. Here are my preseason rankings for the teams as they head into the new year:
50 Of the Biggest Late-Round Steals Since 1970
By Adam Nelson
There are tons of great NFL players that are not chosen in the draft’s first few picks- especially when it comes to wide receivers, kickers and kick returners. In fact, a majority of them were chosen during or after the fifth round. Going from latest to earliest draft position, here are 50 of the biggest draft-day steals since 1970, all taken during or after the fifth round:
