Atlanta is Still the Team to Beat in the NL East

Imagine if a team in the NFL had won their division every single year since 1990. Everybody would be talking about this team heading into the year, they would be one of the most popular teams in all of sports, and it wouldn’t even be a question if they were going to repeat once again as division champions. Why is it any different with the Braves current situation in baseball?

Man on a Rant: February Rumblings

Welcome to this week in ranting.  It’s been a while, but here’s how this works:

Step 1.
Sports happen.

Step 2.
I watch them.

Step 3.
I react.  Angrily.

Enjoy the fireworks.

-Curling is amazing, and hypnotically addictive. No really, I mean it. It’s curltastically curltastic, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a communist.  There, I said it.

Paul Pierce

I hail from the media crazed town of Boston and am perplexed as to the reason Paul Pierce gets such a bad rap.  If any true fan of the NBA, the few that remain out there, could answer my inquisition, I would appreciate it.

Texans Shopping First Pick: Who Should Trade Up?

By David J. Cohen

The Houston Texans are reportedly looking into trading the first overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. They have already contacted a couple of teams about a possible trade. The move would be a smart one for the Texans, who need many pieces instead of one, have a solid QB in David Carr and have perhaps the NFL’s most underrated RB in Domanick Davis. And from what I’ve seen at the combine through day 5, this year’s crop of players is the deepest group in years. This means the Texans could trade the pick, still be high in round 1, and obtain additional high round draft choices which should yield top round talent.

If the pick is available for the taking there are several teams that could make a move for the spot. Some of these teams should move up and some should just stay put. Here are some possible teams that could make a move to get the player they truly covet.

Looking Back…..

by Trevor Freeman

I am writing this article because every March I plug Hank Gathers name into the Yahoo search engine to see what articles come up.  And every time I open up an old article, I cannot believe it has really been sixteen years since arguably the biggest tragedy in the history of college sports spawned one of its most remarkable stories.

What Do You Want- Rookie? Oh Yeah- a Championship

I have to admit it. The off-season can be a little dry. I can read about unbelievable trades and summer camp results, but the excitement and enjoyment are very much short-lived. However, what has truly become a hot source of information has been the recent NBA drafts. The reason this has occurred is that the word rookie no longer implies incompetence or inexperience. The latest rookies have quickly become All-Stars and are now more than ready to garner a championship in their first few years. This was made evident during the 2003 NBA draft, a draft that saw Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony become household names overnight. However, despite their initial successes, who among them has the best chance of truly becoming a NBA great?

A Mets Fan’s View At The Infield

Today is the third breakdown of the Met roster, the infield. With our corner infielder’s hitting for power and our shortstop with blazing speed offensively we should be fine. The one major question mark is still second base. Minaya constantly attempted to move the incumbent Kaz Matsui throughout the offseason but he could not find any suitors for the $8.5 million he was due. Manager Willie Randolph has made it clear that Spring Training results will ultimately determine the second basemen. As of now it’s between, Matsui, Brett Boone, Jeff Keppinger, and Anderson Hernandez.

Yanks to End Drought in ’06?

The date is February 27, and that means baseball season is indeed upon us.  For lovers of the national pastime the long winter is finally over, and we can take solace in the fact that our teams are now engaging in full workouts.  It is shaping up to be a very entertaining 2006 season, but it may be hard to match the last few.  MLB’s parody has been incredible in recent years, with two ancient curses being broken with the last two World Series champions.

However, all this parody has had George Steinbrenner bumming for the last few seasons.  Not since 2000 has his team won a title.  Even with his payroll reaching record amounts; it was approximately 205 million dollars in 2005, more than 80 million dollars higher than any other team. Yet George’s Yankees couldn’t even get to the World Series. They didn’t even get out of the first round!  With such a travesty at the end of the season, it was an oddly quiet offseason for Steinbrenner.  The only big-name change was the signing of Johnny Damon from the hated Red Sox.  People need to remember though that the Yanks won 95 games in 2005 and won the division for the 8th straight year, so one could argue that not many changes needed to be made.

Can Francis Make the Knicks a Successful Franchise?

Headlines were made after the Knicks announced the acquisition of former Orlando Magic player Steve Francis. Formerly known as “The Franchise,” Francis has not lived up to his name in his last two years. Following his trade to the Magic for Tracy McGrady, he was unable to help the Magic reach the playoffs despite the return of Grant Hill. Much criticism has been directed towards him for playing too much one-on-one basketball. This has probably been the cause of his departure; Francis now hopes to start anew in the Garden, home of the most hard to please NBA fans.

RJ’s Junk Drawer

With the sporting world in a virtual holding pattern over the next few weeks while we wait for March Madness and the baseball season (i dunno – April Ardor?) to give us some real sports stuff to talk about (what’s this O-limp-ix thing they’ve been yapping about these past two weeks anyway?) here’s a fresh list of sports notes to whet your appetite until the real fun begins – bashing Alex Rodriguez. Oh, wait, they started that already.

Oh well, here goes. Have fun and don’t read it all at once, thus frying your brain and losing points on the Wonderlic test.
