It is time for a football preview! Ok, so the American version doesn’t come for another 2 weeks or so, but this is the European version. As I vowed after the World Cup, my columns will continue to cover soccer. This is the first article covering the English Premier League.

Blame Bruce for setting a higher standard
By Sean Quinn
Juergen Klinsmann seems like a fine coach. Klinsmann seems like a good man. But so is Rumpelstilskin. And whether the next coach of Team USA is the former leader of the German National Team or the mythical German dwarf doesn’t really matter. Coaching doesn’t matter right now. Players matter and for America, unlike the rest of the world, our best athletes aren’t playing soccer. And until they do don’t expect anymore progress from our national team.

It was a Thursday night affair against a nationally ranked Princeton squad. While unranked, we had hung tough and were down only two midway through the third quarter. Beating Princeton at Princeton would have been a huge feather in the cap of Fordham water polo. A win there and perhaps our name starts getting mentioned as a top twenty caliber ballclub.
Why America Hates Soccer
The World Cup is set to finish soon which means it will be another four years before America starts slightly caring about soccer. Why is this so? I think the following breakdown outlines the reasons:
World Cup Fan of the Week
It’s summertime. I’m American. Baseball is my nation’s pastime, gearing up for the 77th installment of its midsummer classic and my hometown heroes, the Chicago White Sox, appear fit to defend their title.
But soccer is the world’s game. And I’m finally beginning to understand why.
Bruce Arena
U.S. Soccer head coach Bruce Arena is getting ripped for his comments about Major League Soccer. How outrageous of him to suggest that the MLS may be an inferior league to those overseas in Europe…
Now the World Cup Begins: Breakdown
By David J. Cohen
With the field down to 16 and with the playoff portion of the tournament set the true world cup begins. Here is a breakdown of what to expect, organized by halves, as if there were a bracket.
Team USA- A non-American’s thoughts
I don’t agree with a lot of what Americans have been saying about London. I like the food, the way I’m spoken to, and the charming man who talks about Jesus with a microphone in Oxford Street.
2006 US Team has set soccer back 30 years
This team was ranked #5 in the world.
This team was the best we’ve ever sent to the World Cup.
This team was going to show the world that US Soccer is thriving and competitive.
This team is a disgrace.
Dead and Buried- Yet Still Going Strong
The verbal barrage came from sports writers all over the country. A half-hearted effort, they said. They are clearly outmatched, they said. The coach is irresponsible for publicly bashing his players, they said. This team is clearly broken, they said. No chance in even competing with Italy or the rest of the world, they also said.
So where are all of these opining “soccer experts,” now? Well, they’re resting, and not just their mouths and their pens. They are resting their bodies, getting to bed early, so they can get up and cheer for their precious U.S. World Cup team, the team they left for dead just a half a week before.
