Fight On
The San Francisco 49ers lose again. If losing 14 games, a head coach, and a general manager was not enough, the Niners have now learned that they will lose the chance to draft USC quarterback Matt Leinart because the Heisman winning QB will return to play for the Trojans next year. While Leinart’s decision to return to Southern Cal for his senior year might come as a surprising choice, it also happens to be a satisfying choice, especially to the Trojan faithful. Opting to turn down the NFL and the opportunity to be the overall number one pick in the upcoming draft must have been an arduous decision.
But it was a good decision. The right decision.
Downtime
Have you ever wanted to do something really bad and not known what to do when the opportunity arose?
I jus’ wanna’ watch sports- daddy
Look, I watch ESPN as much as the next guy, but I’m also pretty concerned about the direction that channel is headed. Sure, I liked Playmakers and the occasional poker game is okay, but now we seem to get an abomination of an ESPN movie every month or so, and the amount of advertising they put into these things is just stupid. Someone needs to remind the Disney Corporation that ESPN is, in fact, not the Disney Channel.
2005 Australian Open Preview
Rod Laver arena will soon see action. The 2005 Australian Open. Many tennis players, and fans are anticipating this event. However, most of the “regular” sports fans are completely oblivious to the first slam of the year.

The Next Sure Thing
Everyone must sit at home on Tuesday for this reason.
In the Orange bowl on Tuesday, January 4th, the best national championship game in a long time will be aired for our viewing pleasure on ABC. College Football has been a treasure to watch for many reasons and one of them will be the focus of my eyes as well as everyone else’s in the world.
Do Sports Really Matter?
You recollect a lot when standing in line to go through security after a holiday at a major international airport. In the seemingly endless hours in line, I came up with my first (and last) serious article.
Todd Pinkston breaking barriers as NFL
[Editor’s Note: I love reading The Sports Pickle and once in a while, a story comes out that I wish I’d written. Well, the next best thing is to republish it.]
At the same time he is facing intensified scrutiny from Philadelphia fans in light of Terrell Owens’ injury, Eagles receiver Todd Pinkston continues to set high benchmarks as the first woman to ever play in the NFL.
Gather `round the fire, kids, it’s time for a story. About eight years ago I was studying abroad when a friend of mine, Ben Insel, told me rather nonchalantly that he was going to kick his nasty smoking habit. Given how hard quitting is, especially with the inherent pressures in a culture that worships tobacco, I didn’t believe Ben for a second. Later, when talking to some friends about some of the Americans in school who had taken up smoking during the year I listed Ben, to which my friends said “Ben quit.” For the next month I never saw a cigarette in Ben’s mouth and eventually began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, I had underestimated the strength of my friend’s will. Of course the second that happened I walked outside and saw Ben hanging out with the Marlboro Man.
