Thoughts on "Mannygate"

By Ryan McGowan

It’s the first week of August, and there is so much to talk about here in the Hub.  We have the first place Red Sox, fresh off a recent eight-game winning streak and, we hope, soon to start to creep away from the Yankees and claim the AL East for the first time since the Otis Nixon-Jose Canseco era of 1995.  We have the Patriots, coming off three of the last four Super Bowl titles, set to defend their crown with a laundry list of fresh challenges, not the least of which are the absences of Tedy Bruschi, Ted Johnson, Romeo Crennel, Ty Law, Charlie Weis, and Bill Belichick’s wife.  We have the revelation that Rafael Palmeiro’s body has been somehow trying to process the effects of both Viagra and designer steroids, leading one to believe that Raffy’s organs will eventually cry “SYSTEM OVERLOAD” and blow up like the Fembots in the original “Austin Powers.”  We have a governor that is convinced that he is going to be your 44th President of the United States and I have heard rumors that the NHL is returning to the ice in the fall.

Mazzilli’s firing not good for the team

It was announced today two hours before the Baltimore Orioles’ game against Anaheim that manager Lee Mazzilli had been fired for the huge slump the team is in. Bench coach Sam Perlozzo has been promoted to interim manager for the remainder of the season.

It’s BS, that’s what it is. I don’t blame him for the team’s demise — you win together as a team, you lose together as a team.

Did Jose get it right?

“Juiced: Wild times, rampant `roids, smash hits, and how baseball got big,” the title of Jose Canseco’s book. In the book, he talks about helping players such as Mark McGwire, Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, and Rafael Palmeiro.

Building A Better Coliseum

With the Oakland A’s on something of a minor run right now, they have put themselves in perfect position to campaign for a new stadium.  New owner Lewis Wolff has committed himself to making sure the A’s get a new home, as anyone would having just visited the Oakland Coliseum for the first time.  As a 17-year veteran of A’s games myself, and someone who wants only the best stadium for Oakland fans, I’ve compiled a list of issues that need to be addressed with the new ballpark.  So without further ado….

MLB Power Rankings August 3 2005

Following one of the most boring trading deadlines of all time, here’s the MLB power rankings for week 17.

Please say it ain’t so

Rafael Palmeiro, the Baltimore Orioles’ first baseman and occasional designated hitter, has been suspended 10 days for his first offense of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Everyone has probably heard about this already and every sports writer in America has voiced their opinion whether it’s been in their newspaper, on the radio, or on some sports show. Well, I’m going to add my two cents in there since the Orioles are my favorite MLB team.

The Lost Season

They had won 20 of their last 23 games. They had taken a 6 game lead in the NL East. They had an All-star team. Nothing was going to stop them.

Until that fateful day, on which Commissioner Bud Selig announced the strike that was to end the 1994 Major League Baseball season. Suddenly, the attitude around baseball changed. The players were greedy, the owners were stubborn. The fans were devastated, and baseball took a big hit from it.

Commissioner For A Day

Bud Selig. Most baseball fans shake their head in disgust or recoil at the sound of this man’s name. Granted, he has made some changes for the game of baseball that should not have happened. But, he also has done some great things for the sport.

Selig has made changes that turned out both good and bad, that were loved and hated. But all his decisions have been criticized around baseball for years. This is where I tell you how the job of Commissioner of Major League Baseball should be done. The changes that I think should be made and the things that I think should stay the same.

No Manny- No Big Deal

By: Steven Weingarten

Friday night at around 8:30, I was at this bar Cassidy’s in New York having some drinks when I received a voice message from one of my friends. The message was this, “Steve, I just heard on the radio the Mets are close to getting Manny.” I nearly wet myself. This could have either been from the excitement from imagining Manny Ramirez in a Met uniform or from me wanting to wait to break the seal for at least another beer.

As a Met fan I can’t help but say that I am actually happy Manny is not going to be a Met. I am a big Manny Ramirez fan, how can you not be? I know he has  a piss poor attitude and he comes off as a bit of a jerk. But you have to just be amazed at the way he plays the game.

MLB Power Rankings 27 July 2005

Here’s the power rankings after the MLB’s week 16. I missed last week so the rank in brackets is actually from two weeks ago (hence the Padres and Rangers dropping 11 spaces). Questions and comments are, as always, appreciated.
