Forget Ohio State! What About Oklahoma?

Last night Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators won the second BCS championship for the school in three years, bringing home a third straight BCS title to the SEC. The Gators defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 24-14 with the leadership of Tim Tebow, who should run for President some day if you listened to all of the praise the Fox broadcast team delivered last night when it was not butchering the rest of the game.

Congratulations to Florida. Even though Utah is the only undefeated team in college football’s top level, the Gators are your national champions. Much was made about how the once relevant Associated Press poll could make a statement at the conclusion of BCS championship game by voting for another team at #1. Perhaps USC or Texas could gain enough votes for a split national title was the talk of the town. Utah made its statement but failed to gain enough support from the media to earn a so-called split national championship. Utah, you are MY national champion.

Now the time has come for me to put myself in the awkward position of defending Ohio State. What? Allow me to explain…

Pat White is an NFL quarterback

In what was arguably the best bowl game of the season in college football, West Virginia escaped North Carolina with a 31-30 victory to capture the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. and spoiled what was basically the Tar Heel fans’ home game.

Senior quarterback Pat White threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alric Arnett midway through the fourth quarter and the victory was sealed for the Mountaineers by a Pat Lazear interception. White eclipsed his previous highest passing yards of 222 yards against Louisville in 2006 with an astonishing 332 yards and completing 26 of 32 passes as well as adding three touchdowns to the cause.

UGA Fans don’t Fret There’s still more to Play for.

The fact that Georgia was number one in the preseason polls got Georgia fans excited about a national title hope. This was supposed to be a year that meant so much to so many people.

11-22-08 College Football Picks

Another 3-3 week for me as I still remain one game below the .500 mark.  Only a few complaints from the excuses department this week.  USC blew it!  How in the world do you let Stanford score a touchdown on the final play from scrimmage?  This cost them the spread as they only won by 22 (instead of 23).  On top of that, I will never pick a UNC football game ever again.  I feel like Butch Davis reads this column every week and tells his team to go out and make (amsteffe) cringe.  Due to time constraints this week I am going to be a little brief, so bare with me.  I owe RJ Warner a pick between the Oklahoma/Texas Tech game this week, and will hold true to my promise.

Come with me on my quest to get above .500…

11-15-08 College Football Picks

Another 3-3 week for myself, as my overall record becomes 8-10. I don’t really have much from the excuses department this week. The USC offense didn’t show up to play. The Georgia defense didn’t show up to play. North Carolina continued to prove me wrong. I continue to find success in the Big Ten and Big East. This week there is a huge slate of impressive games that I am really excited about. I promised an SC member a pick between Oklahoma and Texas Tech and will fulfill that promise next week.

As stated in each column before, I will pick an interleague game in each of the “Big Six” conferences using the lines from Sportsbook.com. (I still haven’t received any advertising money from them.) Follow me on my journey into spreads and statistics as I try to get over the .500 mark this week.

11-1-08 College Football Picks

Well, a 2-4 record last week was not what I was looking for. I will be the first to tell you that I am upset with my performance last week, and will look to redeem myself this coming Saturday. First, a message from the excuses department. The real key factor to my losing record past saturday was my 0-3 start to the day. I was flabbergasted when I saw the final stats. Boston College, Northwestern, and Cincinnati combined for a whopping 14 turnovers. On top of that, they were -13 in the turnover margin. You can’t win games nor cover the spread with this kind of a performance. I felt somewhat better when I saw that ESPN “experts” had similar picks to myself, but then quickly went back to a sigh of despair when I thought about my 0-3 morning. Now back to regularly scheduled programming. Bare with me this weekend, as I will bounce back like I have time and again.

Once again, I will be using the lines given by Sportsbook.com. I will post one pick against the spread in each of the “Big Six” conferences, along with a breif analysis. Allow me to use the moniker given to the 2008 USA Olympic Basketball Team, as I will call this “Redemption Weekend.” (Lame, I know, but what do you expect from a guy in my position?)

Enough with the past, on to the November 1st picks…

10-25-08 College Football Picks

Well, a long overdue abscence from the SportsColumn has subsided.  Due to my success this year with the picks I’ve been making in my office pool, I will be posting my picks every week for the rest of the college football season.  We all know this has already been an exciting season with many twists and turns, so please don’t go bet your homes on these picks.  (Unless your home is about to be forclosed due to your awful subprime mortgate you received.)

I have truly been a terror on the betting lines this year, I only hope I can pass along some good luck to all of you sports enthusiasts.  Each week I will be picking a game from each of the “Big Six” conferences with a breif analysis alongside.  I will be using the lines from Sportsbook.com.  (They didn’t pay for that advertisement.)  I’m going to try to get my column up on here by Thursday of each week.  Now that all of the rules and regulations are aside, without further adieu, The First Annual Steffey Report…

Cheesy Drumroll Please…

Fan the flames

The USC program gets plenty of praise.  It’s hard not to admire a program that routinely recruits the best athletes and competes for the national championship every year.  However, all is not rosy at USC with losses to vastly inferior teams the past three years.

College Football: Here We Go Again

As another exciting year approaches of NCAA football, we gear up for it in different ways. Many get excited watching the new College Football Live show, which now airs on a daily basis (M-F) on ESPN. This show is entertaining, stirs up excitement, but is becoming more and more predictable and downright illogical.
