Concussions in the NFL and NHL

As defined by the Centers for Disease Control, a concussion is a clinical syndrome characterized by immediate and transient alteration in brain function, including alteration of mental status and level of consciousness, resulting from mechanical force or trauma. Translated, a concussion is a blow to the head that causes a change in brain function.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman is probably one of the most recognizable names on the planet. He was a six time Pro Bowler, three time All-Pro selection, and a former Super Bowl MVP. Aikman was one of the cogs of the Dallas Cowboys’ dynasty in the 1990’s. Yet, when he retired, just a shell of who he was, in 2001, Aikman was reported to have suffered at least ten concussions in his career.

Sunday "Service"

Sunday “Service”

By: Maurice K Dixon

“Let us begin our praise and worship service.”

Well, these aren’t the exact words, but due to synonymous actions, it translates into an accurate statement.  As usual, this portion of service is held on Sunday mornings, but just from September to the end of the year.  Those in attendance normally clap, raise their hands and lift their voices in unison.

However, this service does not contain a closing speaker (i.e. bishop, pastor), a choir, a voluntary offering or worst of all the presence of a Bible.

Oh, I apologize!  I failed to mention this ain’t no church service.  It’s an NFL stadium.

Sunday Night Football

To some, Sunday is a time to unwind. To many, it is a day of worship. I spend my Sundays relaxing while praising the football gods. It is an American tradition to participate in the great sport of football. Unlike with most other sports, you do not need to physically be in the game to be a football participant. It is as much of an experience for the player as it is for the spectator. The trials and tribulations experienced by players on field translate to fan emotion off field. Therefore, for this past November’s Sunday Night Football game–this  season’s undefeated team to beat, the  New England Patriots took on my favorite team, the struggling Philadelphia Eagles–I decided to focus on the onlookers of the game instead of on the game itself (being a fan of the game, this was harder to do than it may seem).

He’s Just Chad…Being Chad

He is both a unique and talented football player.  He is unique in that he plans out touchdown celebrations weeks in advance and sends Pepto Bismol to opposing defenders.  He is talented in shattering Bengals receiving records and making spectacular catches that few human beings have any business making.  He is Chad Johnson.

The Absolute Hard Evidence a Player Uses Steroids

By David J. Cohen

Since the steroid cloud has polluted athletics fans everywhere have debated whether certain players are steroid users. Did Barry Bonds improve ten hat sizes in four years or did he hit his head really really hard one day? Did Slamming Sammy get his power from giving grace to the lord or by slamming some needles into his body? Is Shawn Merriman now just lights out or is he still juiced up? With many players the glaring signs are there but there is no tangible proof. And unless a player couldn’t cover up, wrote a book, or hired the worst lawyer in America it would always remain a debate. Until now.
