American History NFL

As they filed out of my living room, I reminded myself of why I had given this party.  There were enough events to choose from, but I had resisted the urge to go out and “mingle” and chose instead to have a group of friends at my house for something I considered important to my life.  Some of these friends actually understood what they had just seen.  Most of the others figured out it was important, but they really didn’t know why.

Americans watch the Superbowl and the announcers on the telecast always brag about a billion people watching the game around the world.  Even assuming every American watches the game, I always wondered how they came to such a high number.  Now that I’ve lived overseas for a number of years this question intrigues me even more.

Making Sense of the Mock Drafts

With so many people making their own mock drafts this year, I felt it might be more worthwhile to make a comparison of different versions including some bloggers and paid journalists.

I started by making a Google search and the first hits were actually bloggers followed by some acknowledged NFL journalists from different media sources. Although the results might be affected by the timing of the actual updates, I have tried to keep this in mind in my analysis and have included the last update in the table.

The problem with making a mock draft is that many times the picks are traded away and the teams that take over the slot might have different needs. This can completely change the whole draft order. Almost all those making their selections seemed concerned with this and it means any guessing has to be taken with a grain of salt.

With all this in mind, the following is my analysis of the coming draft based on the input of 6 different mocks prepared during the month of February. It will be possible for a player to be a consensus pick more than once.

Striking Gold

Mitch Kupchak learned a lot from his mentor Jerry West. With the trade of Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Los Angeles Lakers, you can say that Kupchak also learned the art of fleecing other teams from Jerry West.

For us who weren’t around when West dominated the NBA in the 60’s, the only memory we have of him was his cunning guile and craftiness as the general manager of the Lakers during the late 90’s. After all, he was the one who signed Shaquille O’Neal away from Orlando and duped the then-Charlotte Hornets to trade their 1996 first round draft pick – a tall, skinny high school kid from Philadelphia – for Vlade Divac.

Jerry West made the Lakers a championship contender with those moves. And now – after a history of questionable moves – the apprentice finally made the trade that would make his teacher proud.

Enter the Matrix

The American Airlines Arena didn’t have a three-story billboard of himself. There weren’t any balloons, water guns, and certainly no black SUV’s with Superman-inspired rims.

What there was, however, was a long table with a requisite Miami Heat backdrop, a few chairs, and a couple of unopened bottled waters.

And that’s about it.

MLB Given Pass By Feds

By Diane M. Grassi

But MLB has not learned much in the past couple of decades when it comes to the integrity of the game, in obeying the law and in protecting the best interests of its athletes, its most precious commodity.

"14-6: The Historic Championship Season of New York’s Imperfect Giants"

“We can’t all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.” -Will Rogers

About 50 blocks south of me the New York Giants are holding court in the Canyon of Heroes. Thousands are flooding lower Manhattan in an overwhelming parade of gratitude. Thank you, Big Blue. For doing for your fans what the Red Sox did for Boston in 2004. We needed more than just a Super Bowl, and somehow the Giants gave it to us.

Top 10 Upsets of the Last 28 Years

The perfect way to start off my 2008 Sportscolumn writing season is to create one of my favorite things in the world: a top ten list. I decided, what with all the upsets in college football this year, that a list of the top ten upsets would suffice nicely this article. But then I thought, “There’s no way I can handle the pressure of narrowing all the upsets in sports history to a top ten list!!”

So I made my own job a little easier by narrowing it down to the ten greatest upsets of the last 28 years. Why? First of all, I’m barely 19 years old so I prefer to make a list out of things I know well and secondly because it sets the stage for the year 1980 to be included in my countdown. Foreshadowing? Hmm…
