Fire Up the Hot Stove: Chicago Cubs

“Wait till Next Year”

That famous quote year after year after year. Why? Why do I as a Cubs fan have to say this every year, at this same time of the year? 1908.  1908 is the last year the Cubs won a World Series Championship, and ever since then it has been a living hell for every Cubs fan throughout the world.

But, I have a way that this team can contend next year and for several years to come. All the Cubs need to do this off-season is spend the money (and there is a lot to spend) in the places they need to spend the money.

They need to make decision on most ever position on their roster and it won’t be easy. This year’s free agent pool is very thin, but they have some in-house parts to use for next season. I will go position by position and tell what I think the Chicago Cubs need to do to become a possible play-off contender.

Last weekend of the regular season: playoff picture

For more stories by Kent Summer, check out 3rdand10.com

Going into this weekend, the American League has one division that is still up for grabs while the National League’s divisions have been decided. Both league’s wild cards are still open with the Astros and Phillies going at it in the National League and the Yankees, Red Sox, and Indians all battle it out in the A.L.

Healthy trash talk

He’s cocky.

He’s got swagger–a lot of swagger.

He’s conceited.

He emanates an air of boastfulness.

He’s also a darn good football player.

Roids- Roids- and more Roids

I know what you’re thinking, how many times can we banter back and forth about steroids before we realize it goes in continuous circles? Steroids have become an STD to the sports world, fast spreading with no solution. So far, the MLB has taken the biggest blow (Did the 500 foot homeruns or the constant record-breaking seasons tip someone off?). Canseco is writing a book while simultaneously going insane before our very eyes. Raffy P. (his rapper name derived from P Diddy of course) is wondering if he still has a shot at a full time career doing Viagra commercials. Bonds (gotta love this guy) conveniently misses the 2005 season due to a sudden physical breakdown, just as the ‘roids controversy reaches its zenith. To top it all off, every record that has been broken, or shattered, in recent years is now in question.

Will The New York Jets Ever Fly Home?

Home field advantage. Every team in professional sports enjoys it. Every team expects it. Every team deserves it. But then there is the New York Jets, who have been playing in another state since 1984. They have not played a legitimate home game in over 20 years. This has all been by choice. And recently when they have a chance to have their own stadium right in Queens, they are in negotiations with the Giants to build a new stadium in New Jersey. They may once again be playing in another team’s building for 16 games and further alienate their loyal fans.

Why the Astros are Going to the World Series

The Houston Astros have all but locked up the Wild Card in the National League with a 2.5 game lead over the Phillies with only 5 games left to be played in the season.  The team’s dominant pitching, stellar defense, and won’t quit attitude are going to lead them straight to the World Series.

Yankees take sole possession of AL East

For more stories by Kent Summer, check out 3rdand10.com

For the eleventh time in twenty-two games, the Yankees came within one run of either winning or losing a ballgame. In tonight’s case it was winning, as Shawn Chacon gave his team a lights out performance, pitching 6 2/3 innings while giving up only one run. Chacon who, along with Aaron Small and Alex Rodriguez, is part of the trio that has been most valuable to the Yankees since the all-star break, has now lowered his era to 3.40, down more than 60 points from two months ago.
