Week 16 2007 NFL Power Rankings

The Green Bay Packers are once again a dominant team. Prior to their Dallas game a few weeks back, then had won three straight games handily, and after leaving Dallas, have now won two straight in impressive fashion, as well. They continue to win on the road, put up points, and aside from maybe this past game, reinvent their offense by integrating a new running game.

Now, all of a sudden, after the Cowboys fell to Philly, the Packers are two wins and a Dallas loss from home field advantage throughout the playoffs. How do you think the rest of the NFC is feeling right now? There’s a pretty good chance the road to the Super Bowl will be going through Lambeau.

And that’s why Green Bay jumps up a slot past Dallas this week. As for the rest of the teams, here are the power rankings for the upcoming week 16 in the NFL…

The Class of the NFL

This just in people: The New England Patriots did not lose to the Steelers, as the jaw-jacking back-up safety Anthony Smith so cleverly predicted. Oh, I’m sorry, guaranteed.

Not only did they once again step in the face of adversity and come out the winners, but they did so with the kind of confidence we have never seen. And what’s so wrong with that? When Tom Brady stepped toward Anthony Smith after his touchdown throw late in the game, he was met with onslaughts of insults from the Steelers defenders, as well as later criticism from reporters and people all around the league, calling him classless.

NFL Post Season Predictions

Conventional wisdom would say that it won’t matter if the Patriots go 16-0 this season. They’re going to the Super Bowl, regardless. No one can stop them, and that’s including Peyton Manning and his injury riddled Colts. And let’s not even start with the NFC, right? The Dallas Cowboys, who are now lifted to new heights as the powerhouse of the NFC after defeating Green Bay, are supposedly not even close to New England in terms of fire power. And the proof? A 48-27 drubbing handed to Dallas by the Massachusetts natives in week 7.

But that’s just speculation. Hell, I guess everything is when it gets to this point in the season. To be honest, the only thing we’re certain of is that the Miami Dolphins are not going to the playoffs, and that New England has won it’s division.

Big deal.

I’m not saying don’t vote for Bill Belicheck for coach of the year, or neglect Tom Brady from the MVP. I’m just saying don’t shut out the little guys from the big game before it even starts.

Contrary to popular belief, there are other teams that will be in the playoffs this year. In fact, there are eleven reasons why the Patriots should worry about their winning streak, and why they are becoming, week by week, more vulnerable.

The way the playoff picture looks now, the following teams would be in the playoffs:

AFC: New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Jacksonville, Cleveland

NFC: Dallas, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Seattle, New York Giants, Arizona

And that’s exactly how it’s going to stay.

Week 15 NFL Power Rankings

Boy, was this a strange, and quite honestly, depressing week of professional football.

For starters, we saw virtually nothing out of stars like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, and Adrian Peterson. Yet, all three of their teams won without any significant contribution from them.

That is both strange and depressing. But, I guess for those three respective teams, also uplifting.

We also saw three NFC teams clinch their division and a playoff spot (Cowboys, Packers, and Seahawks) while we saw the Cardinals, Lions, Bears, and Eagles all do serious damage to their bids of making a run at the post season.

The question is, was there any good that came out of this week? Why, of course.

The New England Patriots, classlessness and all, stayed unbeaten, while the ever so classy Miami Dolphins found so many new ways to not win a game.

And with those few tidbits out of the way, here are your NFL power rankings for the coming week 15…

Week 14 2007 NFL Power Rankings

This was just one of those weeks where you know something was off. Something just wasn’t quite right. Naturally, it began with Thursday Night’s game with Green Bay at Dallas. Brett Favre ran away from the offensive game plan, ignoring the style of play that had gotten his Packers off to a 10-1 start, instead throwing two picks and completing only 5 of 14 passes before leaving the game for good in the second quarter.

I mean, really? Brett Favre. Hurt? And then comes in the odd man out, the guy no one has expected anything from, basically since he was drafted. Aaron Rodgers plays exceptional football and almost wins the game.

Week 13 NFL Power Rankings

It’s getting to the point where any team can win any game in today’s NFL. Sure, that has always been the case, but it’s different now. The Patriot’s are nearly a given to win every week, and teams like the Packers and Cowboys, and even the depleted Colts, are heavy favorites going into their contests. But outside of them, it’s fair game.

This week we saw multiple overtime games, crazy endings, and some players who have been down and almost ruled out for some time, surge back into our thoughts. Those players undoubtedly found themselves a place on someone’s fantasy football team, as well, but also found a way to move their squad a spot or two up in this week’s power rankings.

Why I’m not Thankful

Aside from the lovely Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday and a Green Bay Packer win, I am left so very unsatisfied. Once again, Thanksgiving Day Football has left me uninspired and left wanting more. More from the players, frankly, as they have time and time again dashed my hopes of gaining a strategic edge in fantasy football before the Sunday games could come around to us. But alas, like every year during this holiday, the games are poor contests with even worse statistics. Aside for Favre going off like this was his last game on earth, it was a huge bummer. And with that said, here are the 32 things I am NOT thankful for in sports, but most notably the NFL, just one day after the holiday.

Kevin Do Not

Why are we still talking about Kevin Durant like he’s the second coming of Lebron James, or even the second coming of Carmelo Anthony, for that matter? I mean, his situation relates in some ways better to Anthony, as a matter of fact, but you get my point. We’re ballooning this kid into this great statue of a player, and he’s played just 8 games. We’re buffing him and sculpting him into something his fragile frame cannot handle. I mean, really. He moves around like a high school player. The kid couldn’t even bench 180 pounds at pre-draft workouts. Not even once. And don’t tell me that has nothing to do with basketball. It has plenty to do with basketball. Look at Lebron, Kobe, and T-Mac. These guys are finesse, yet complete players. They take it to the rim with moves, swagger, confidence, but most importantly, physical play. They rely on their muscle, explosion, and finishing touch to dominate their opponents, and I’m here to tell you, that is something that our chosen one Kevin Durant severely lacks.

Week 12 2007 NFL Power Rankings

The Dolphins finally start John Beck and it doesn’t matter. The 49ers switch to Trent Dilfer and it doesn’t matter. Vince Young finally has a good statistical game and it doesn’t matter. None of these teams could win this past weekend.

The fact is, the main thing that helps teams win in the NFL is consistency and continuity. If a team is one-dimensional they will find ways to lose. And for a team like the Titans, now is not the time to realize that when your quarterback plays well, you can expect your receivers to drop all the passes thrown to them. While Vince Young played his heart out against Denver, it didn’t matter. In fact, as Tom Brady so eloquently WON’T tell us, none of this matters. What matters is the Patriots are undefeated and are likely to stay that way until the season is over. And that is why, once again, the Patriots triumph to the top of the rankings, and everyone else just sits and watches as history continues to be made.

Week 11 NFL Power Rankings

Another week in the NFL, another line of questions. Is the victory over the Colt’s, as Norv Turner would say, truly a turning point? Are the Packers for real? No, the Colt’s defeat doesn’t mean the Colt’s are losing out or going to miss the playoffs, and no it doesn’t mean the Chargers have got their magic back. But yes, the Packers and Brett Favre in all his glory, are for real. And they’re here to stay, moving up to number three.
