Every year we await football season like die-hard conservatives await new furs from a recently endangered animal. We make our projections and tell everyone how right we’ll be.
And then the crazy people like myself even project which coaches will be fired. Ah, how fun it is.
So I got to thinking, just who is the worst head coach of all time?

August is upon us and some teams have already established themselves as favorites in their respective conferences. Between returning starters and new additions, the offseason has dictated some preseason favorites to win it all. On the other side of the ball, certain teams have been eliminated from competition before a regular season game has occurred. Whether it was a bad draft, no significant signings, or a major injury, these teams will be fighting to stay out of the basement all season.

If the NFL had a playoff system like the NCAA Tournament, where each team that won their division got an automatic bid and the rest of the tourney got filled out by the next best teams, AFC fans would rejoice. This is because the AFC would probably fill just about every at-large bid. You can make a very strong argument that seven of the NFL’s ten best team are in the AFC. From the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots to the “on the cusp” Houston Texans, the AFC is flat out loaded. The AFC East and West look to be particularly bruising. Since we began in the “Not So Wild” NFC West for our NFC preview we start back East for my AFC version.
When a 32-year-old man is whining and complaining on national TV, two things come to mind. Either the man is on the Jerry Springer show or he is Terrell Owens.
Sportscolumn has one open slot for an NFL expert to be part of our weekly picks crew. This year, we are doing a podcast along with the written picks. Here are the requirements:
1. You know football.
2. You have cable or DSL.
3. You have a computer capable of running Skype.
4. You can commit to a weekly conference call on either Wed or Thurs night (TBD).
5. You don’t sound like you’re 12 and feel comfortable speaking “on air”.
6. You aren’t a complete jackass.

Drew Bennett of the Titans. Torry Holt of the Rams. Joe Horn of the Saints. Reggie Wayne of the Colts. Nate Burleson of the Vikings. All five of these wide receivers had nine or more touchdown grabs in 2004. What separates them from Terrell Owens, better known as “T.O.”? Well, T.O’s salary in 2004 ($9.16 million) is more than five million above the combined salary of the other five ($3.94 million). While the other five receivers are content with their contracts for this season and are not holding out for more money, T.O. is unhappy and is asking for more. Just doesn’t fit, does it?

If you like hope refer to the 2004 Boston Red Sox. If you like miracles refer to the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team. The miracle of hope, though, can’t be found in any sports arena or stadium. It can’t be found in any athlete or come from any performance-enhancing drug. The miracle of hope can only be found in blessed individuals. And no miracle has ever seen so much hope as in the heart and spirit of Hunter Kelly.
Even though the Green Bay Packers have won the NFC North division the past three years, there are three vastly improved teams nipping at their heels in 2005.
The Packers have been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL since 1993. Since that year, the Packers have only missed the playoffs twice. That trend will be tough to continue this year because of some crucial off-season moves by the Packers and the other teams in the division.
On Saturday, amidst a raucous crowd in Tokyo, Japan, the Atlanta Falcons seemed to do everything that they possibly could to lose their game against the Indianapolis Colts.
