Steeling The Dream Season

There were a lot of reasons to be glued to your television on Sunday afternoon. This year’s feel good, team to root for was finally playing it’s first meaningful game in a month, and it’s first such game since meaningful took on a whole new meaning for it’s head coach. As they do every once awhile however, the sports gods reminded us that the game isn’t played on paper, or even in the movie theater. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who were written off by just about everyone in the football world three weeks ago, steam rolled the Indianapolis Colts early, and as if we were the audience during a fall-laden figure skating routine, we watched in shock, unable to turn away.

Deflated Dynasty

The New England Patriots have had a great run.  Nobody can deny that they have been one of the greatest teams of all time.  While they certainly haven’t been as talented as teams like the Broncos, Cowboys, 49ers, or Steelers of their time, they’ve had intangibles that no other team had.  Bill Belicheck is the greatest coach of his era and ranks right up there with legends like Vince Lombardi and Bill Walsh.  The image of him standing on the sidelines in his Patriots hooded sweatshirt will likely be what people will think of.  They also have a man by the name of Tom Brady.  Tom Brady has won 3 Super Bowls at age 28.  He could retire right now and easily go to the Hall of Fame.  New England is broken right now, but the dynasty has not been destroyed.

No Pass for the Seahawks- Seattle’s The Team to Beat

Examining the AFC playoff picture it becomes apparent that cases can be made for each of the four remaining teams to represent the conference in the Super Bowl.  However, when looking at the NFC side there is no reason to look beyond the obvious choice.  The top-seeded Seattle Seahawks have all the necessary ingredients to reach Detroit.  If they fail to do so their season should be looked at as a disappointment.

Is Manning The Key To The Colts Offense?

Peyton Manning has quarterbacked the NFL’s best offense for the past seven seasons. With a football culture that extremely overvalues quarterbacks, it has been Peyton Manning who has received the abundance of credit for the Indianapolis Colts offensive success. Manning’s ability to read defenses, call audibles at the line of scrimmage, and make big plays with his arm is not in dispute.

However, Manning seems to do it with an ease not seen before in the professional game. Is Manning that much smarter than every other quarterback in NFL history? Or, is there a key, external, variable that allows Manning’s star to shine above the rest?

Why the NFL Draft Shouldn’t Be As Easy As 1-2-3

With the conclusion of the Rose Bowl and the crowning of a national champion for college football, the top selections for the upcoming NFL draft look to be getting clearer.  Players from USC and Texas (to mention the two top teams) have declared themselves eligible.  The Houston Texans have the #1 pick, with the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans follow up at #2 and #3.  But, will this order be the same?  Who will be chosen?  Why do I think that Reggie Bush will NOT be a Texan?

No Offense- But Skins Roll to Seattle

It may not have been pretty, but by winning Saturday’s rematch with Tampa Bay, the Washington Redskins extended their win-streak to six games and punched their ticket for another Saturday showdown, this time in Seattle with the best team in the conference.

The NFL CAN do wrong

As football junkies, we plead ignorance to the tribulations of the NFL. Unfairly though, we do not lend such leniency to other sports, especially the NBA.

patriots year is every year

As we head into the NFL’s second season the questions are formulated.  Is this the year for the Colts, can Jake Plumber finally lead win a big game and so on.  What we are missing however, is that there is one team that has left no question unanswered.  The New England Patriots.  They have proven leaders on and off the field in Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck who have dominated the game for nearly half a decade.  When their supposed to win they win, when their supposed to lose they win, this team is unshakeable.  Yeah Manning has the records, and the colts are having their best season ever, but they are not winners.
