Some day, maybe in 2034, some disgruntled, fan-beaten manager of the Boston Red Sox will issue a harsh rant to the assembled throng of media members in the clubhouse:
“All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. Doug Mientkiewicz isn’t walking through that door, friends. Dave Roberts isn’t walking through that door, and Pokey Reese is not walking through that door. And if they did, they’d be old and gray.”
It ended on October 27, 2004. It ended on a night where there was a lunar eclipse. It ended 18 years after possibly the 2nd largest choke in MLB history (yes, Yankees fans, the 2004 Yanks are still number one). Yes, the Curse ended. The Boston Red Sox are World Series Champions.

Fresh off a massacre that left all of New York battered and bruised, the most lucrative and thriving sports franchise in all of sports history desperately needs to be rebuilt. As I sat in my living room watching ESPN while simultaneously listening to sports talk shows, the latest buzz seems to be that Houston outfielder Carlos Beltran is the missing piece the Yankees need. People just don’t seem to get the drift–if the Yankees sign Beltran, next season will be a mirror image of this one, a season marked by defeat.
For the last 13 seasons there has been but one constant: that the Atlanta Braves will win their division. There has been one other near-constant: that the Atlanta Braves will lose in the playoffs.
The Boston Red Sox may have a two game advantage, and they have beaten the Yankees. They think the so-called Curse is broken. They’re wrong. Because of their shaky fundamental play, it’s only beginning to come into play.
The Beginning
The alarm rang, 8:30 a.m. After a shower, banana and water, shoes on, it was 9:15.
I saw my neighbor on the way out, nodded, climbed into my car and fought my eyes as the hills of Marin unraveled.
Phone calls, typing and coffee, and it was back in the car.
Bambino, Bucky, Buckner, Boone and now Brown. The irony in it all, Brown didn’t help the Yankees, he cursed them. The man shipped over to mitigate the bleeding of losing Clemens, Pettite and Wells ends up injecting a powerful shot of opium into Yankee fans across the country. The sad end to the most storied dynasty in the history of sports took place on Wednesday, October 20, 2004.

I almost did it. I almost bought a Yankee hat.
I was driving from Boston to North Attleboro on Sunday for my dad’s birthday and stopped at the Walpole Mall, knowing full well that the closer I got to Foxboro, the more chance I had of accidentally driving into a state trooper setting out orange cones for traffic control, which would not be a good thing. I wanted to get my dad a book at Barnes and Noble. Hey, I`ve only bought him about 20 books over the years, approximately 5% of which he’s actually read. Still, I figure I can get away with buying him books because at least I can read them when I come visit.
I shed a tear for the Cubs fans, but what about the other 21 teams who missed the playoffs?
