Mets Head Into Winter Meetings With A Mission

From the time Omar Minaya was hired as the Mets general manager last year there has been a sense of urgency within the franchise to provide a playoff caliber team. It started last year with the signings of both Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez and it has continued this year trading for Carlos Delgado and signing Billy Wagner. With the winter meetings starting tomorrow the Mets are going in determined to fill in their remaining voids.

No More ‘Wade-ing’ For An Exciting Hot Stove Season For Phillies Fans

By: Jon Morrill

If you’re feeling like new Phillies GM Pat Gillick has done more in the past month that he’s been in office than former GM Ed Wade did in the past eight years, you certainly have good reason. In the four weeks since Gillick replaced Wade in South Philly, he’s made some shrewd moves that seemingly already outshine what his predecessor accomplished in close to a decade in charge.  Let’s recap, shall we? In the past week alone, Gillick has…

Haven’t We Seen This Before?

By: Jon Morrill

When heading into writing anything as a journalist, you’re supposed to remain objective; to write the piece without bias or slant. But also in writing, especially in sports writing, you should have some passion about your subject. In this particular case, the latter is keeping me from maintaining the former–I have such great passion, or at least emotion, about the subject that I am about to talk about that its hindering me from keeping a balanced perspective. I’ll do my best to adhere to the strict rules of journalistic writing, but I’m not making any promises.

Major League Baseball Needs a Salary Cap

Steroids is just one factor that threatens the integrity of baseball. Sports is supposed to be a game of fair play. One major issue that needs to be addressed is a salary cap in Major League Baseball. This article gives hard-nosed facts to prove my point about the need for a salary cap.

Free agency- transactions- and Yankee Analysis

Looks like a boring off-season for the Yankees, as Brian Cashman sits back, watches the Red Sox pick up talented players from the Marlins, as he waits for the antique sale.

If their over 35, been on the disabled list, and have the tag-name “BUM” on it, Brian Cashman wants them. Why not look at the young talent? Hasn’t he learned a lesson by now? Why, of course not. It’s the Yankee tradition, and we, the fans, are sick of it.

Southern Central Rain (I’m Sorry)

For those sober enough to remember the aftermath of the 1997 World Championship the Florida Marlins bought from Major League Baseball, these past couple of days must seem like déjà vu. But they should only wish that this were just déjà vu.

The Florida Marlins have begun a purge similar in quantity to that of Josip Stalin during the 1930s. Already gone are Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett, traded to Boston. Now the Marlins paid the Mets to take Carlos Delgado, although they got superstar rookie Mike Jacobs in return. Plus A.J. Burnett, Brian Moehler, the entire bullpen, Juan Encarnacion, Jeff Conine, and Alex Gonzalez are all on the free agent market.

NL MVP: In a Two Horse Race- It’s Pujols By a Nose

“It’s designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains comes, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone.” -A. Bartlett Giamatti

Such is life of a baseball fan. Here we are in mid-November with only a few meaningless awards to argue over and the coals of the Hot Stove to warm us/coax us through the winter. My brothers, I feel your pain. Meaningless or not, however, argue we must.

Colon as AL Cy Young Winner?

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted on the American League Cy Young Award Winner, and it was a surprise to many. Some think that there was some biased opinions involved, but others think that the nomination of Bartolo Colon was not the right one.

Cleveland’s Own Baby Boom

I would rather have to give a conscious komodo dragon a hysterectomy then face the Indians in the next five years.
Despite giving away the American League Wild Card to Boston as a lovely parting gift, the Tribe only has prosperity to look to forward to in the future. After going 93-69 in what was supposed to be a “re-building” year, and having a farm system that seems to be producing future stars asexually; Indian fans should brace themselves for an epidemic that will be storming Cleveland in the upcoming summers known as “Tribe Fever”.
