It’s been seven years since that pesky bunch of Gonzaga Bulldogs entered the NCAA Tournament as a number ten seed, and stunned the college basketball world by making it to the West Regional final against Connecticut. Now, in 2006 Coach Mark Few’s squad is receiving more national attention that ever, thanks to All American Adam Morrison. But yet, for one reason or another, many are still overlooking this dangerous team. For whatever the reason is, it’ll prove to be a mistake. When the Final Four assemblies in Indianapolis in six weeks, the Bulldogs will be there.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have always been known as a football school, in fact a powerhouse. As the third winningest college football program of all time, Nebraska has had its share of high points. You could mention the five national titles, the three Heisman Trophy winners, or the the 270 straight sell outs at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Nebraska has a great tradition and is usually one of the top programs in the country every year.
The Huskers have also had their troubles though. I will tell you about this decade of football in the Husker Nation!
Now that everyone understands the power of Penn State Football again, maybe it’s time for college basketball fans to realize the Nittany Lions are, maybe for the first time, in the midst of a serious rebuilding stage. Penn State, who just finished a stretch where they played five consecutive ranked opponents, finally came through in the end and defeated a top-notch program, while boosting the hopes and future of their program as well.

The 7th ranked Florida Gators defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 95-80 Saturday night. Florida dictated the style of play from the tip and dominated Kentucky in the second half. It was an impressive victory for the team that should turn some critics into believers of the “orange and blue.”

I remember the first time I heard his name. Dick Vitale was hyping him up to be the next Larry Bird. This was before he was about to take the court at Madison Square Garden for the first game of his collegiate career. Imagine the pressure he must have felt. Imagine knowing that from now on, the only person you would ever be compared with is “The Hick from French Lick.” The fact that this eighteen-year-old kid didn’t seem fazed by it was the first sign of his future greatness.

That Time of Year Again
I think that people in this country truly do not grasp the fourteenth amendment.
Like any other survey on racial equality in collegiate sports, the University of Central Florida is attempting to dictate NCAA policy. According to “Professor” Richard Lapchick’s study, minorities make up less than 20% of presidents, athletic directors, and head football coaches at Division 1-A universities, including a decade low in number of head football coaches. And this is all true.
Thanks mostly to football, conference expansion is impacting much of the college athletic world. Even from baseball to women sports, the movement of teams from one conference to another is causing the competition level to increase across the NCAA. Still it is the Big East’s calling card where the best storyline is being played out. For a head basketball coach, preparing for a week in the Big East is akin to a deer preparing for a walk during hunting season. There is no time to relax. That is why fans should not wait until March to enjoy this conference. Because no matter what happens then, the action taking place now is not likely to be duplicated elsewhere.
A record was set tonight. The all-time Duke record for the most consecutive wins to start a season was tied today by this year’s Blue Devils, who moved to 17-0 with a win over N.C. State last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. A win at Georgetown would set a record that no other Duke team has equaled. Ever. That means by any Duke team. Not Laettner and Hurley. Not Brand and Dunleavy. Not Battier and Williams, and the list goes on and on. This isn’t an imposing, fear-striking, dominating Number 1 team. So what gives? Why do they keep winning? And more importantly, shouldn’t they be stopped?
After watching the four BCS bowl games this past week, I was left speechless. I was left speechless at how unbelievably nerve-wracking, exciting, entertaining, and deeply emotional these games were. Each game was close up until the very end with the exception of the ND- Ohio State game that could have easily gone the other way with one call (Ohio State fumble). I was very proud to be a college football fan.
It is no suprise that the Wisconsin Badgers are once again tied for the lead in the Big Ten, and evidence points to a sucessful season and tournament run. If the team can stay on the same page all year, as well as stay healthy, good things will come.
