Can’t Say We Didn’t See It Coming
Well, maybe not to Oregon State but I think we all knew that USC was going to lose this season. This isn’t the same Trojans team that we have seen the past three seasons and I’m not just talking personnel. They have struggled several times this season and just don’t have the ability to put teams away. To use the famous pun, “they lack that killer instinct.”

You almost get the feeling with this USC team that they need to figure out that they are not going to win just because the name on the front of their jersey. They need to go out on the field and earn it!

Mountaineers Moving Up!
Thanks to the USC loss and another impressive victory on their part the West Virginia Mountaineers are the number three team in the most recent BCS Poll giving them a legit opportunity to be in the BCS Championship Game.

The Last Man Falls

Southern Cal will not run the table. But if hypothetically it does, it should not play for the national title.

Not under any condition. Not even if it’s the only unbeaten team in the country.

At the midway point of the 2006 season, USC could easily be 3-3, and it still hasn’t played anyone good. And even in the most recent of USC’s three decided wins, the program struggled, pulling away from mediocre Arizona only after three quarters when the Trojans’ superiority in numbers came through.

I have but one piece of advice to pass along to all of you……..

Beware the Bay Area natives in your NCAA Tournament pool this season. For they are the ones that have been reading College Basketball preview magazines since mid-October and are already prepared for March Madness. An October stumble in baseball and two NFL teams that have yet to leave the gate have reduced us already to March planning……..and plan I already have.

It took some careful film study and consultation with my crack research staff but we are ready to unleash our preseason Top 25. Words can’t describe the anticipation with which I am looking forward to the upcoming season of college hoops. You know why NFL football and NCAA basketball are my two favorite sports to follow? It is because both sports do it right in terms of how a season should be structured. Both sports begin with drinks and light hors d’oeuvres (preseason NFL games and preseason tournaments). Those are followed by a solid main course (regular seasons) which is then capped off with a sumptuous dessert and after dinner Scotch (NFL playoffs and NCAA Tournament). With that let me order my first cocktail and begin our list with………..

Thug U Strikes Again

The single most disgraceful act in college sports happened this weekend. Something so heinous, it’s almost shameful to admit to being a fan of sports. Of course by now, you know I’m talking about Miami taking on Florida Atlantic. Even with the idiotic behavior with the players, the more shocking thing might be the dumb comments by color commentator Lamar Thomas, an ex-Hurricanes player. Thomas went on to say the following, “Now, that’s what I’m talking about. You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don’t come into the OB playing that stuff. You’re across the ocean over there. You’re across the city. You can’t come over to our place talking noise like that. You’ll get your butt beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing.”

In 1985, The Citadel linebacker Marc Buoniconti, son of now-hall-of-famer Nick Buoniconti, almost died trying to make a tackle. Luckily, he was only paralyzed.

Now, almost a full 21 years and more than half of his life later, Buoniconti, 40, will return to The Citadel to have his number retired.

I wanted to wait a few weeks into the season to let all the contenders show their stuff as well as some sleepers and I wanted to do it yesterday but was busy.
