Time For a Playoff

In a era when computers decide who gets the right to play for the national championship and coaches or the press do not have a say, it might be time to avoid the commontion and controversy and switch to an easier system, one that would ensure that the national champion was truly the best team in all of college football.

Rivalry Week: Why we still love college football

Oh my Gosh! College Football as we know it over! Ohio State AND Michigan aren’t playing! What shall we do?

Well readers, Week 13 of the college football season  it’s not all about Notre Dame-USC. It’s about interstate rivalries, where schools battle it out for every trophy under the sun for a year of bragging rights.

So here’s what we learned….

Sorry OSU and Michigan- but the college football season’s still got a few weeks to go….

No sports fans, just because Ohio State-Michigan is over it DOESN’T mean that the college football season is over until January. Alex Ferguson serves up four games that you SHOULD be watching over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Argument Against Michigan

Never has an Ohio State/Michigan game been so big and meant so little.  Arguably the greatest rivalry in sports, the 42-39  epic between the two programs last Saturday may have been the most exciting installment of the series ever.  The new BCS standings could render the classic battle meaningless, however.  With Michigan ranked number two behind the Buckeyes, the once improbable notion of a rematch is now more than a possibility, it is a probability.  This would be a terrible injustice to the rest of the teams playing for a shot at the Buckeyes in Glendale, and the most convincing proof to date that college football needs a playoff.

No Rematch Required

Ohio State secured a berth in the National Championship Game on Saturday, defeating Michigan, and becoming the stand alone, unquestioned leader of the pack. It was not controversial, nor disputed. By winning the game, Ohio State knocked out the second challenger from the number two position this year.

Closet Duke Fan: The time has come.

You know you love ’em.  Somewhere deep inside yourself, in places you don’t like to talk about, there grows a strong and profound love of Duke basketball.  I know, I know.  There was a time when I too shared this shameful secret.  I joined the groans that came with every Blue Devil win, year after year.  I feigned disgust every time I saw Christian Laettner drop in that famous fade away. I cursed Coach K and made wild accusations of referee tampering and tournament committee bias with the rest of the Duke haters.  Then, on one fine March evening, I realized that I liked the Dukies because of the way they focus on team basketball, the way they hustle on defense, and the way they always, always, ALWAYS win.  It was that day that I stood up and embraced my inner Blue Devil, that little voice inside my head telling me what I already knew—I am a Duke fan.

Michigan vs Ohio State

Usually I’ll leave other people for superlatives, but for when two unbeaten teams, ranked #1 and #2 in the nation, get together for a game which virtually decides who’s going to the National Championship game in January, then I’m the first to say that it doesn’t get bigger than this. This is the big one…Michigan vs Ohio State.

Five Predictions for Rivalry Week

I’ve decided to make my own predictions in honor of all the sportscolumn controversy. But so as to not be accused of plagiarism, I’m only making projections that nobody else will make.

These are my five games of the week- five games you won’t see on television, but that you’d definitely wonder who would win.

Virginia Tech College Basketball Preview

Five starters return to the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team this season. These are five starters from a 14-16 team, but in a rare example of life intruding into sports, this team has an excuse and a reason to expect more.
