Death of the underdog

Deep within the American psyche, somewhere in the diluted definition of our national identity, lives the underdog. Born of our roots, with a triumphant revolution and a declaration of equality, the underdog exists in the foundation of American culture.

Kerry Kittles: Rod’s Thorn?

The New Jersey Nets are the Eastern Conference version of the Los Angeles Lakers. A team relatively dominant in its respective conference about to get dismantled because of large contracts, as well as egos. The only difference between the destruction of the Lakers and Nets: There is still hope for the Nets.

Manny and Thome – Ohio Players

A quick glance at baseball’s league leaders in home runs reads like this: National League – Jim Thome, American League – Manny Ramirez.  They are two of the biggest stars in the game, both establishing their Hall of Fame credentials with every titanic blast, but have both remained somewhat mysterious to the public.  Blame part of that on Major League Baseball’s reluctance to promote superstars, but also look at the two men as two personalities that you wouldn’t expect to find in professional sports.

We are happy to announce that Sportscolumn.com has been chosen Yahoo’s Pick of the Day. Sportscolumn has been around for years but the latest incarnation was only launched a month ago. Yet, we have had such excellent contributions from our community in that short span of time that the site was recognized by the Yahoo editors for the award.

I want to welcome all the new members we’ve had lately and encourage them to start contributing, whether it’s an article, voting on the articles in the moderation queue, or just adding your comments to existing columns. Your participation will make this a better site for everyone.

The NBA Draft of The Future

Since high schooler Kevin Garnett was drafted high in the 1995 NBA Draft, the face of the NBA Draft has changed dramatically. Scouts look at potential versus what they have accomplished. I’ve taken a humorous look at what will happen if this trend continues.

Red Sox….. afraid of risk?

Now that the Beltran saga is behind us, at least till 2005, and A-Rod is the new Yankee for life, the Red Sox may now have to reap the consequences.

Playoffs in Washington D.C… sad times

As the NBA finals are going on strong and the NFL playoffs have passed, the biggest trend seems to be the emergence of players after they leave the Wizards or the Redskins.  Let’s look at the Pistons of 2003-2004 for example: the four former Wizards players on the Pistons are Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Rip Hamilton and Darvin Ham.  3 of their 5 starters are former Wizards (Rasheed, Ben and Rip), 1/3 of their team is made up of former Wizards, Rasheed and Ben have been all-stars (Rip will be Finals MVP and will definetly be an all-star next year unless he is injured) and Ben Wallace has been Defensive Player of the Year twice.  But the most astounding number is that these 4 players make up 1/2 of the Piston’s points per game in the playoffs and in the regular season…wow.  Lets just call them the Detroit Wizards from now on.

Oh Thank Heaven For Okafor

In my previous article, I wrote about how the Bobcats screwed up the expansion draft, which they did, and how they needed to make up a bunch of ground in the amateur draft. Well, they did just that.

In a New York Microcosm

In the fifth inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets finally had Mike Piazza at the plate with Kaz Matsui and Jose Reyes on base, something that has never happened before.  What took place was all too familiar.
