2010 NFL Week 17 Picks and Podcast

It’s the final week of the season and the NFL’s experiment of making it all divisional games has yielded us exactly one truly meaningful “the one for all the marbles” game. And that’s… Rams vs Seahawks? Yep, what most would have picked as an early favorite for Top 5 worst games of the year is actually the best game of Week 17. Maybe it’ll end 4-2 and make history.

This week, we’ll see which of the 4 experts wins the Locks of the Week contest for the season.  Also, this is the last week to brush up on your regular season betting prowess before the playoffs next week.  Before you know it, we’ll all be eating 3000 calories, actually paying attention to commercials and putting cash on completely ridiculous (yet absolutely compelled to throw money at)  Super Bowl prop bets like “which Black Eyed Pea will sell out hardest” and “whether the Super Bowl MVP is gonna thank God, the fans, or his psychiatrist first.”   Dammit, I can’t wait.    Don’t worry too much that most of the games this week are useless, just consider it a hungover appetizer for the real games.

The featured games this week are Bucs at Saints, Giants at Redskins, Bears at Packers, and Rams and Seattle.

2010 NFL Week 16 Picks and Podcast

Two weeks to either get into the playoffs or go plan those tee times. It’s not the division winners that are important (especially not the NFC West winner), it’s the wild card teams and which one can go into the postseason smoking hot. We blaze through the lesser games and focus on the ones that affect the playoff race.

The featured games this week are Jets at Bears, Niners at Rams, Giants at Packers, and Saints at Falcons.

Illusory Economics

In professional baseball we have all just witnessed a big bang-like collision between a false claim to a non-existing economic crisis and the wealthiest sports franchise on the face of the planet. The impact has birthed the unprecedented humiliation of the one of the game’s all-time greats. Derek Jeter, unfortunately, is the initial example of what it means get robbed in free agency in the 21st century.

Heading into the 2010 season, it felt like an opening day of old for the Yankees organization. The Bombers had finally gotten over the hump, laying claim as king of the hill by winning their 28th World Series Championship in 2009 and were ready to begin their rampant march to repeat. However, there was one big elephant in the room for New York, but in April it may have seemed to most as only a mouse. Clearly the elephant was Derek Jeter’s contract status after 2010. Jeter would be playing the final season of his ten-year, $180 million contract and would likely be demanding a hefty price for what would appear to be his final contract as a New York Yankee.

Championship Week & The “WeakCS”

So, the usual, determining, gut-wrenching, frog-in-the-throat, hearth throbbing, “Please God let us make it through this week”…. week is finally over. Most fans of big time college football have been through this sort of week, kind of like—Morning Sickness meets Tequila Hangover. You can not wait for it to be over. This is how fans, players and coaches of the Oregon Ducks and Auburn Tigers felt when the week started and now both teams can rest unabated, nay, hibernate knowing they will now square off in the BCS Championship on January 10th.

This weekend gave us two abortion-like of games in the Oregon and Auburn matchups. Oregon State never really had a chance and Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks were outplayed from the time the whistle blew. Honestly? I, like many, wanted both teams to lose (Oregon & Auburn) just for the sole fact it would be on account of the Beavers & Cocks. What a headline that could have produced. On the other hand I’m glad both of them won because TCU and Stanford in the Championship would have donned the lowest ratings EVER but the highest test scores between two Championship teams. Ha!

2010 NFL Week 13 Picks

That’s right. No podcast this week. Why? Because the rest of the panel couldn’t take Ryan farvrelating Tom Brady for 20 minutes as he picks New England over the Jets. Or maybe we had some technical and skill difficulties and just mailed it in like the Cardinals did last week.

No Mr. Anderson, nothing funny at all about that, sir.

Also not funny were Ryan and Vin’s record against the spread last week despite a very good straight up showing. This week we’ll try to not shame ourselves as NFL prognosticators. Lucky Week 13 NFL Odds courtesy of betus.

2010 NFL Week 11 Picks and Podcast

The Playoff race isn’t exactly heating up yet but the pilot light is on. This is the week where pretenders start falling by the wayside. Lose your 5th or 6th game this week and you’re almost out of the playoffs. Unless you’re in the NFC West where 6-10 could win it.

The featured games this week are Packers at Vikings, Bills at Bengals (small market love), Colts at Patriots, and Giants at Eagles.

Bullies like Jeff Tedford have no business in college athletics

Let me be clear about this: before Saturday night, I had nothing against California head coach Jeff Tedford. Nothing. I had nothing against his personality, his coaching, his demeanor. Nothing. So if you think I’m just biased against him or Cal for any reason, you’re wrong.

But after last night, after the press conference in which he called out his kicker, I do have something against coach Tedford, and this will be the last time I refer to Tedford as a coach. Because after Saturday, I don’t see any way anyone could possibly call his actions those of a coach.
