Locks of the Week

Vegas Vinny: (6-8, Balance =$950). Both teams are struggling to score touchdowns but at least the Steelers have sniffed the end zone in the past couple of weeks. As an Eagles fan, I’m required by law to like Rex Ryan, but if you’re going to be all bluster and bravado, you better step up when it counts. They certainly didn’t step up against the Patriots and then they embarrassed themselves even more the following week with the whole tripping shenanigans.

Championship teams have a singular focus. They don’t mess around with gunners on sidelines, tv shows, and other assorted nonsense. Unless Mark Sanchez somehow channels Jesus, the Jets offense is in big trouble. The Steelers are tremendous at stopping the run and they will make life tough all day for Greene and Tomlinson. If Sanchez can make plays, the Jets have a chance. Unfortunately for Jets fans, he won’t be able to. Steelers win 12-3. $110 to win $100 on the Steelers (-6).

BostonMac: (6-7-1), Balance =$995)The Jets are done. D-U-N-N done. The shellacking they took two weeks ago in Foxborough has rattled them to the core. They haven’t score a touchdown in weeks. They can’t move the ball. They have to rely on Nick Folk if they want to score. They are playing like Gordie Lachance, in a dazed trance after pulling a leech off his balls. Now they have to go into Pittsburgh and try to beat the Steelers at Heinz Field? No chance. The Patriots shook the swagger right off Sexy Rexy. Sideline Tripgate has spiraled out of control, and Mike Westhoff even comes out and basically blames the Patriots for their strength coach’s dick move against the Dolphins. Distractions, distractions, distractions. Beneath his tough facade, Rex is an insecure bully, and the Jets have assumed that personality, unable to beat teams close to them in talent since week 2 and instead feasting on the weak and mediocre. And as inconsistent as the Steelers’ offense is, they ain’t a weak and mediocre team. (And this is before the Jets lose on the road to the Bears next week!) Lock it up, $220 to win $200 on PITTSBURGH (-6).

RJ: (7-4-1, Balance =$1015)First of all, I’m sorry for the Seattle pick last week. As good of a line as I thought that was, I should’ve realized that me and Seattle don’t get along, and I will never darken their door with a LOTW again. I thought that a team playing for first place would be able to block, cover and tackle, but I must’ve forgot we were talking NFC West, where all of that is optional.

My confidence may be down a bit, but I think the Steelers are giving the Jets too many points. I know we’ve been seeing the worst of the Jets on offense, but the defense has still been up to snuff. I know what happened against the Patriots, but that has been happening to everybody (including the Steelers), so throw that out. In fact, throw any offense out the window. Heinz Field around this time of year is Where The Points Aren’t, and they will be extremely hard to come by. These are the top two rush defenses in the entire league, so eliminate the running game and look at the passing game. Both quarterbacks have protection issues, especially the Steelers. Look for both teams to be in a lot of third and long situations. If only there were punters on your fantasy team…

The Jets are desperate for a win to fend off any wildcard chasers, but they won’t find it here. However, the six points is too much in a game where you’re more likely to see a defensive score than an offensive one. So expect field goal after field goal in Pittsburgh on Sunday, with the Jets (+6) staying within at least a few. These teams are just too evenly matched and have too many of the same problems for one to be favored by this many points over the other. $55/50

Burton: (7-6, Balance =$1005).

I don’t really feel like doing a write-up, but I do feel like betting $330 to win $300 on the hottest team in football, or at least the second-hottest, the New Orleans Saints (+1) to beat Baltimore in Baltimore and keep pace with the Atlanta Falcons.

You two have the Steelers and I have the Jets? interesting.

(I also picked the saints SU & ATS…forgot to change that on my e-mail) I’m anti-AFC North.
