MLB Power Rankings for July 28th- 2006

Welcome again to another week of the Sportscolumn Power Rankings. The Tigers extend their lead in the AL Central and the Yankees have overtaken the Wild Card. The Dodgers have fallen off the face of the earth and Cincinnati is still clinging to playoff hopes by the skin of their teeth. And although the division leaders are all still the usual suspects, half of baseball is still in the playoff hunt. Right now there are 12 teams within four games of the division leader and 3 more teams within four games of the Wild Card.

AFC West Breakdown

In 2005, the AFC West was home to three clear cut playoff-caliber teams.  Unfortunately, only one of them, Denver, actually reached the postseason.  This is probably the deepest division in the AFC and may be at risk to beat each other up all year, causing another couple of playoff-worthy teams to be cut down again.  Find out in the fourth part of the series…

A ten-foot table.

Full Pitchers of Natural Light.

Fifteen cups with a six-cup overtime.

That’s right my friends.  It is time for ESPN to finally air the “World Series of Beirut”.

Offseason Report Card: Chicago Bulls

After experiencing a quick reversal following the second retirement of Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls resurfaced, making the playoffs in three consecutive years. The numerous talented first round picks have led to this resurgence. Kirk Hinrich is the team’s point guard of the future, and Ben Gordon (Ben Jordan?) won the Sixth Man of the Year Award. The new generation of players has created a new image of baby Bulls who scrap and grind out their games.

What’s Going On

What is wrong with pitchers? One hundred pitches and they call it a night.

Times have been a changin’ and not for the better in baseball.

You hardly see any pitcher go the full 9 innings and throw over 120 pitches. Come on, suck it up. You get paid to pitch, what could be better?

The mind set for pitches has changed dramatically since the days of Feller, Koufax, Gibson and Guidry. It used to be, throw the complete game. Pitch as much as you could and not give in at first sign of fatigue and pain…
