Who is America’s Team?

Well, would you look at this poll from ESPN.com.  Exactly the type of poll that drives me nuts.  I had no idea that the term “America’s Team” meant the most hated team in America.  All they had to do was add in Duke basketball and the Braves and this list is complete.

Are NBA Refs Pulling for the Lakers?

Ahhh, playoff time in the NBA.  Also known as Lakers get all the calls time.  (See last year’s How Fixed is the NBA? column.)  Well, after the Madsen trying to foul Shaq / Telling the ref he’s fouling Shaq / Shaq acknowledging that he was being fouled / no call from Dan Crawford fiasco, I decided to study the 4th quarter of game 4 to see if there really was a bias at the Staples Center.  Here are my running notes.  I will admit I can’t stand the Lakers but if you have the game taped, you can go back and find the times and confirm or refute my findings.

Top 22 MCs

I was reading through the Sportscolumn archives when I stumbled upon this short column about the Top 22 MCs of all time.  This was originally posted a year ago right around this time.  (The Dead Zone – when nothing is going on in sports.)  Top X lists are always good for a debate.  Here’s the list and my opinion:

Women We Love

One of the most popular parts of SC.com is the Women We Love.  Sure I stole this from Esquire magazine but hell, they really are women we love right?  Unless of course you’re gay.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Here’s your chance you comment on the women we already have and suggest any new ones.

Back to the Fun Stuff

Now that The Revolution (that’s this site if you haven’t been paying attention) has launched, I can go back to doing what I enjoy most: ranting and raving. But before I get to that, some thoughts on being a Flyers fan.  You know those laboratory rats that constantly push the lever looking for a treat but end up getting an electric shock instead?  I feel like one of those rats.

We Need a Revolution!

[originally posted April 27, 2004]

This column is going to sound like marketing copy (and trust me, I’m no marketer) but we need some fresh blood in sports journalism. I’ve been working on Sportscolumn 2.0 for a little bit of time now. It’s slow going but that’s what happens when you have no deadline and you actually have a full time job. (This is also my excuse for not having posted anything in 3 weeks.)

The 2003 Nate Newton-Bam Morris Award goes to…

(originally posted June 25, 2003)

Cardinals FB Dennis McKinley.

Apparently, he couldn’t live on a professional football salary so he was smuggling in marijuana from Mexico, storing it in a warehouse and then shipping it out via tractor trailer (not to be confused with the Hornet’s forward) to major cities in the United States. McKinley was the “mastermind” of a drug smuggling operation. Oh, I’m sorry… allegedly. I love it. You win the athletic lottery and still try to sell drugs? What is his excuse? Just trying to find a way to get out of the ghetto? Was the 1500+ lbs of pot for personal use? (ironic that Cypress Hill’s “legalize” just popped up on my iPod.)

And this is why I love hockey!

(originaly posted 2/12/2004)

At any point in a hockey game, a real brawl can break out. And by real brawl, I’m not talking about the no real damage done of pushing and shoving in football or the big haymakers intended to miss of basketball. Strangely enough, baseball is the closest to hockey in terms of real fighting.

The Hoagie Report

(originally posted February 05, 2004)

I was hoping for some positive Philly sports news after the Super Bowl but it just ain’t happening. The Sixers are showing “no heart”, the Flyers don’t have a goalie (one is out with a knee injury, the other is hanging out with David Duval.) and the Phillies haven’t even reported yet. It’s a desperate day in my life when I’m anxiously awaiting a baseball season.

Ummm… no thanks Janet

(originally submitted 1/2/2004)

Being a die hard Eagles fan, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the Super Bowl yesterday. Partly because I was bitter and partly because the whole spectacle of the Super Bowl is rather anti-climatic. However, as I was doing a bit of reading, I was inundated with instant messages about Justin Timberlake ripping the top off of Janet Jackson.
