Ummm… no thanks Janet

(originally submitted 1/2/2004)

Being a die hard Eagles fan, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the Super Bowl yesterday. Partly because I was bitter and partly because the whole spectacle of the Super Bowl is rather anti-climatic. However, as I was doing a bit of reading, I was inundated with instant messages about Justin Timberlake ripping the top off of Janet Jackson.
Now, my image of Janet is permanently fixed in her 1994 mode in that video where she’s on the sand in a white tank top; you know the one. Back then, she was as hot as all get out. So of course, I did some googling and browsing of message boards and was given a link to a still of her unveiling. Turns out there’s not much to get excited about. As a matter of fact, I’m rather turned off. It’s as if Michael Jackson from his Off the Wall days somehow got older and developed breasts. (And didn’t turn into a white pasty zombie freak.) Is Janet 40 now? She’s no Demi Moore.

I particularly like the fact that Janet acted surprised and Justin called it a “wardrobe malfunction”. If you think this wasn’t elaborately staged, there’s a bridge I’d like to sell you. Is it a coincidence that Janet has a new album coming out in March? It’s all just one big publicity machine.

The Super Bowl halftime show has become everything for everyone. The producers trot out a star from every type of music that’s trendy and give them 2 or 3 minutes to do their bit. Usually, it’s a young pop star but there’s always the Aerosmith exception. That is, some band trying to hold on too long to popularity and relevancy even if they haven’t had a decent song in decades. Usually, it’s just Aerosmith but sometimes they find another old band who needs cash. I can’t believe how much Aerosmith has sold out. They’ve become the Phil Collins of hard rock.

Well, congratulations to New England. They deserved it but this is the worst thing that could have happened to the Eagles. Now, the front office is going to look at NE and say “see, they don’t have any superstar WRs and they got it done.” And the next thing you know, Vai Sikahema will be reporting that Andy Reid doesn’t want TO in Philly because their personalities don’t match. Will the 2004 Eagles Gold Standard Motto be “We Rival the Bills in Choking!”
