American Shame; a year to forget

Just like everyone else, I’ve had my bad days. Just last week, I woke up, I stubbed my toe on the way to the bathroom, lost my keys, got stuck in traffic, had a fight with a coworker, had nothing in the refrigerator for dinner and was numbed to sleep by a World War II Holocaust documentary.

THE MANY PROBLEMS OF THE BCS – SOLVED

Yes. College football sparked my interest at the right time.  I was never a big football fan until I went to my first college football game.  I was hooked the moment that I saw the inside of the stadium.  I learned about the game very fast.  I grew familiar with the teams, conferences, championships, bowl games, but not the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).  The BCS includes the six major conferences:  The Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, PAC-10 and Southeastern Conference. So I looked furhter and examined this thing called the BCS. Let me be the first or the millionth person to tell you, it is a piece of crap system.

The Weekend That Wasn’t

By Ryan McGowan

If you let it, rain can do a lot to dampen your spirits (pun intended, I guess).  In July, on the morning of the annual McGowan Open golf tournament, I woke up to a drizzle that eventually turned into a torrential downpour on the eighth hole.  Fearing a lightning strike akin to the Bishop on the 18th green in Caddyshack, we took an unscheduled hour and a half break in the clubhouse, during which a bunch of us cracked open some Bud Lites at 8:30 AM on a Saturday.  My team was leading the tournament at the turn; a cancellation of the tourney after nine holes would have given Team Brewsaders our first-ever possession of the McGowan Cup trophy.

The blind leading the blind; is it time for instant replay?

I’ve made mistakes before and while I’m not usually the first to admit it, I’m not the last. I thought Tom Brady might be a fluke after the Patriots’ first Super Bowl win. I thought Ken Griffey Jr. would persevere over his various (even limitless) injuries. I thought Tanya Harding couldn’t have played a role in clubbing Nancy Kerrigan. And maybe worst of all, I thought Ryan Leaf would make a good professional quarterback.

The Biggest and The Best!

Doug Small reviews the biggest sports stories of the week, and the best sports stories of the week.  Sometimes the biggest and the best are the same story, but usually Doug doesn’t think so.

Welcome to the first installment of my weekly column, “The Biggest and the Best”.  I’ll be reviewing the week’s top sports stories, as well as its best.  Sometimes, the same story qualifies as both.  Usually not.  Enough about how this works…let’s get started

Lances and Tigers and Bonds…Oh My!

If you’re a sports nut, like I am, you constantly hear about the great teams of the past. The 1961 Yankees. The 1972 Dolphins. Wooden’s Bruins, Rockne’s Irish, Bowman’s Habs, and Russell’s Celtics.
