2010 NFL Predictions and Podcast

Welcome to the 2010 NFL Preview show. Burton sits in for Ryan (who was possibly robbed by Raiders fans) to discuss the upcoming NFL season with Vin. Sportscolumn.com’s 2010 NFC Preview

The Cowboys are Vegas darlings to win the NFC this year.  Is it the drive to play on home field for the Super Bowl?  Did Tony Romo get a new girlfriend?  Is it all the America’s Team fans driving up the betting price?  Who knows.  The Cowboys have the most talented roster in the NFC and it’s easy to see why Vegas bookies are pegging them at 5-1 odds to win the NFC.   But I’ve got a better bet.

Unlike the AFC, there are only a handful of teams worthy of consideration to represent the NFC in Super Bowl XLV:  Saints, Cowboys, Vikings and Packers.  One of these teams will be in Arlington on February 6th, 2011.

Into the Great Wide Open – 2010 AFC Preview

The AFC this year is quirky—so many teams, so few clear-cut favorites.  There isn’t even a clear-cut worst team in the conference, as the Raiders shouldn’t be quite as horrid as past years.  In fact, the conference title is wide open, pretty much for whichever team can conceal its flaws long enough to grab it.

A Donovan McNabb Primer for Redskins Fans

Dear Redskins fans,

We’re not that different you and I.  We’re football fans, we’re rivals, we both want to win the Super Bowl.  We’re basically neighbors who don’t like each other.   For the past 10 years, you’ve been looking at the car that’s been parked in my driveway, a high performance shiny model, getting up there in miles but mostly reliable and certainly better than anything you’ve had in your garage for the past decade, even as you buy car after car.  Yet, even though I don’t like you, I just sold you my car.  Curious, isn’t it?

From the outside, it’s easy to look at Donovan McNabb and think that Eagles fans (well, at least some of us) must be either crazy or stupid for happily offering to make a trip down I-95 and drop off McNabb’s stuff.  But, from the outside, you have no idea what you’re in for.   Here’s a dossier on what you can expect from the Donovan McNabb Experience and why.

Kings of the City

A local radio host (Andy Gresh of 98.5 the Sports Hub) got me thinking Sunday morning.  Tom Brady, Gresh said, is Boston sports.  With all due respect to Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Josh Beckett, and maybe Jason Varitek, when people think of sports in the Hub, #12 shows up in their minds as the physical incarnation of our fair city’s athletics.

But, like a lot of Patriots realists, Gresh is starting to see Brady’s career as kicking into the back nine and into irreversible decline.  So, he opines, who will become “the” icon of Boston sports when Brady is gone later in this decade?  And then, who is currently “the” icon of the other major sports cities of America?  When you think of a city’s sports scene, who embodies that city?  And who will be next?

Super Bowl Party Rules for the Hardcore Fan

If you are a hardcore football fan, Super Bowl Sunday creates a dilemma: do you watch the game per your usual routine (either alone or with a small group of knowledgeable football fans) or do you join the hoi polloi for a Super Bowl Party?

If your team is playing in the Super Bowl, you must maintain your usual routine. There’s no excuse for breaking it now. If your team loses, it’s most likely your fault. This is not the time to be messing around with parties and not wearing your lucky underwear. The Lombardi is at stake.

For the rest of you, if you make the decision to host or attend a Super Bowl party, here are the rules you must adhere to. If you’re attending a party, print out this column for the host and other guests and let me be the jerk in your stead.

State of the Patriots Union Address

On December 31, I wrote “Five reasons the Patriots can win Super Bowl XLIV.”

Nice prediction. That’s right up there with the geniuses who predicted the Betamax would clobber the VHS, or that New Coke would be a sales bonanza for Coca-Cola, Inc. Predictions like that basically show why I don’t make my living picking NFL games, though I did win the Poor Man’s PTI regular season pick-‘em championship for the umpteenth year in a row, so what does that tell you about the guys on the show with me?

In light of the Patriots’ embarrassing first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, I thought it would be a good time to take stock in our local NFL franchise and deliver my State of the Patriots Union Address for 2010 and beyond.
