Straight From The Cellar – 2006 NFL Predictions

The annual jaunt to professional football immortality, better known as the Super Bowl, begins in earnest in less than one week. Of the 32 teams in pursuit, two will be forever remembered; one as the glorious victor, the other as their inglorious victim. Who will they be this year? Will it be like last year, where two perennial playoff teams (Steelers, Seahawks) that had come up short finally achieve the immortality? Will it be reminiscent of the 1999 season when two teams came out of nowhere (Titans, Rams) to deliver not only their own immortality, but an immortal game, as well? No one really knows. And, it’s good that prediction columns are not immortal (see last year’s column).

Will he be a Pro Football Hall of Famer?

We have all heard of Marcus Allen and Warren Moon – both Pro Football Hall of Famers.  But there is a third player with connections to both Marcus and Moon who is a major force in professional football who hasn’t got the recognition those two have but undoubtedly deserves it – Damon Allen.

Damon Allen was born in San Diego, California and is the younger brother of Marcus.  But more importantly, he is only the second quarterback in all of professional football to reach over 70,000 yards in passing during his professional career.  The first, of course, is Warren Moon with a total of 70,613 yards.

Friday Free For All

You know, a long time ago, before the blog and site development sucked up all my time, I used to write about 3 columns a week here on SC. Only about one and a half of them were any good. Still, that’s a better batting average than Peter King, who manages to suck (mostly Tom Brady) in every single column. Ever since Trevor came out with his sports medley column, I’ve been meaning to wrestle the title of “Most Random Writer” back from him. So here it is folks, the inaugural Friday Free For All.

Say NO to TO

I’m forewarning you. This article might seem hypocritical. You might read this and think I’m using this forum to condone something in the same breath that I am endorsing it. Let me assure you, this cannot be further from the truth. I am here to spread a message, a public service announcement, if you will. I am standing from the highest mountain and preaching to you, faithful followers, about the perils inherent in the overexposure of a sports figure. One particular sports figure.

I’m asking you… no, no, no… I’m pleading with you… Say No to T.O.

NFC North Breakdown

Ah, the NFC Norris division.  Often made fun of last year because of their lack of any skill, this is a division that could be on the upswing.  The Bears have the best defense in football and could even make a playoff push, while the Vikings and Lions could be simply a year or two away from the playoffs.  Learn a little more about the teams in our sixth divisional preview…

Mr. Paul’s Escape

The sun is about to set on the NFL commissioner’s reign.

For the National Football League, an era is quickly ending. And for the commissioner, Paul Tagliabue, retirement can’t come soon enough. While he managed to avoid any strikes over 18 seasons (or do they prefer ‘work stoppage’), there were still plenty of lawsuits, subpoenas and various other legal headaches to keep even the biggest law firms busy.

NFC East Breakdown

After a two-week hiatus, we’re back to bring you the best football knowledge money can buy.  What better way to get you back into the swing of things than with the best division in football, the NFC East?  Some guys have come (Vanderjagt, Randle El, Archuleta), some guys have gone (La’Roi Glover, Keyshawn, Ramsey) and some guys just can’t get enough of the East (T.O., LaVar Arrington).  While we aren’t sure how these changes will pan out in the long run, we do know one thing: it’s gonna be fun to watch.

AFC West Breakdown

In 2005, the AFC West was home to three clear cut playoff-caliber teams.  Unfortunately, only one of them, Denver, actually reached the postseason.  This is probably the deepest division in the AFC and may be at risk to beat each other up all year, causing another couple of playoff-worthy teams to be cut down again.  Find out in the fourth part of the series…
