All the talk surrounding the blockbuster deal between LA and Miami has been Shaq-centric, as well as the orbit of several planets. But what about the other side of the coin? LA may see the rebirth of some of its legendary rivalries, spark all-new ones, and once again become the most interesting story in sports. Not just the Lakers, but the entire town. For those of you who enjoyed LA becoming the drama capital of the world in sports, too, this next bout of speculation is for you.

Lakers’ reign of terror over
5 years, 4 Finals appearances, 3 rings–the Lakers are living a dream. But with every great dream there is a painful shot of reality. And the Lakers received their vaccination after their disappointing loss to the Pistons in the NBA Finals.
One head coach and one childish 300 lb. superstar later the Los Angeles Lakers are left with a disgruntled rising star on trial for rape and the Los Angeles fan base breathing down their necks. The Lakers for the past 5 years have been the team to beat in the NBA, but now that two of their key components have fled the coop, what is left for the Lakers to cling to?
I’ll analyze the trades, departures, and divorces made by the Lakers this off-season and what it means to the teams involved.
By Jeff Bartl
It is about time that I set the record straight and bring the remaining 16 NBA die-hards back to earth about the Shaquille O’Neal-to-Miami trade.
Miami’s New King Arrives
The Miami Heat’s salvation arrived today in the form of the seven foot funny man known as Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq joked his way through the media session, but also made his mission clear. Bring a title to South Beach. Everyone seems to have won with the MDE (Most Dominant Ever) moving to Miami. Well besides the team clad in purple and gold that is.
Let’s Get the Off-Season Started!
For those of you stuck in the sports desert known as July, here is some heavy duty reading for you. The NBA off-season has been a hectic time for player movement by free agency and trades. I breakdown each and every NBA team and give them their due, regardless if they deserve it or not. So take that much needed break from work and spend some company time catching up on the NBA. The boss might not thank you, but I will.
Sebastian Telfair: Underrated!
We are in the midst of an age where young athletes are being showcased, analyzed, and exploited in this country before they are even old enough to vote for its leaders. The national media has ranking systems and publicized opinions before these athletes even reach high school. Sebastian Telfair exemplifies the problem this presents.
“Bassy,” as he is often called, was rated the #1 basketball player in the country for his age before he reached high school. He was also the youngest player ever to attend the prestigious ABCD Camp, which is reserved for the nation’s top prospects. Telfair first turned heads there when he showed up as an incoming high school freshman and performed brilliantly against phenoms older, stronger, and supposedly better. It was then that the mystique of Sebastian Telfair began to take shape.
As sick as this sounds, Rob Pelinka may have just saved the league thanks to his questionable ethics. We are at a very dangerous time for the NBA. The league is highly unstable right now. Some of the biggest names in the league trying to force their way onto other teams by complaining publicly through the media. An endless barrage of potential mega-block buster trades loom that will redistribute talent in a spattering of directions that will leave everyone confused. The break up of the Lakers and success of the Pistons is creating seismic waves that has teams re-evaluating their philosophies and scrambling for a piece of the Laker yard sale. Teams are awarding indefensibly horrendous contracts to mediocre players as the unsigned superstars sit back and laugh as their potential dollar amount sky rockets by the day. Along came Rob Pelinka, whose indiscretions are going to create tension between teams and agents that should at least slow down the out-of-control signings.
Hey Kobe, “Wanna Be Like Mike?” Then stay with the Lakers. Do you want to start carving your own path? Then pack your bags, or actually just change Los Angeles jerseys, and sign with the Clippers.
Sex Appeal?
When you think of Denver sports, you think of Mile High stadium. You think of John Elway finally winning the Super Bowl, and then doing it again. But lately the sports world has been looking at Denver in a whole new light. Denver now makes you think of Kobe’s life changing mistake. It makes you wonder how much we really now our favorite sports heroes. But does all this media coverage give Denver a certain Sex Appeal for free-agent superstars?
Phoenix or Nash-ville?
Every off-season at least one team decides to overpay for a free agent. This years lucky losers…The Phoenix Suns. Or should we call them the Nash-ville Suns?
Phoenix jumped the gun after they realized that their offer wasn’t gunna match the opposing contracts being thrown at Kobe Bryant. They panicked and decided to go after a point gaurd, a good move since they were looking at throwing Leandro Barbosa into the spotlight too quick, but they picked the wrong one at the wrong price.
