Everyone knows the George Steinbrenner likes to meddle. That has been one of his trademarks, ever since he took control of the Yankees. But it’s not only his involvement in the team’s day-to-day affairs that has gotten him in trouble. He has been suspended for paying gamblers to get dirt on his players, for making illegal contributions to campaigns, and then there was the fact that the Boss called one of his players a “fat pussy toad.” One of baseball’s most colorful executives, it’s no wonder that a man like George Steinbrenner, owns a team like the New York Yankees.

The Yankees are the Evil Empire. They sign the best players, and generally a) finish over 500 and b) play baseball in October. They draw more fans than anyone else in the league. And you know why? George Steinbrenner.

When a team has started over 13 pitchers going into August, you know that the wheels aren’t turning smoothly. And when a team signs three big-name pitchers in the off-season, with two of them on the disabled list, and the third having back spasms, it’s easy to deduce that the team is in a bit of a rough spot.

Ignorance, as defined by Webster, is the condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed. George Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman combined, are the epitome of ignorance.

For the past two days the New York Media has been infatuated with the idea of the Yankees possibly dealing Gary Sheffield.  For the most part, Yankee fans have been outraged and why shouldn’t they be?  Sheffield has proven himself as a “Yankee,” and after a season which landed him second in the MVP voting, he has come back again with a first-half only out done by Alex Rodriguez’s gargantuan start.  So why would the Yankees, who season has already been the definition of tumultuous rock the boat even more?  Is there something we are missing.  All I know is that throughout the year Sheffield has not seemed happy.  You only have to look to this past Sunday to see the culmination of Sheff’s frustration. It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds and how the anger Sheffield displayed after hearing the trade rumors will affect his production.

Sheffield’s leaving would be another example of Yankee madness.

Around a month to July 31st, and it’s no surprise that there’s trade news from Yankee Stadium. However, Steinbrunner, Cashman and the backroom staff in the Bronx have shocked everybody in the baseball world by chatting to the crosstown Mets about sending RF Gary Sheffield to Shea for Mike Cameron and Miguel Cairo.

Many have offered explanations for the plight of the 2005 Yankees. Here’s another one: the Yankees are failing because of the hiring of three starting pitchers, whose stats were inflated because of their time in the National League.
