And the Oscar goes to…

The 2005 New York Yankees for best… coming out of the basement sports-esque miracle run?Like my fellow Yankees fan, YankTank, I too acknowledge that the Yankees are a complete disaster. Walking into school with my Yankee’s hat gets me jeers and boos from the Red Sox fans and the Yankee haters that make up the majority of my school’s population. I mean when a team gives up 6 runs in the first inning, its bad. But when the team that put up those 6 runs is the DEVIL RAYS, its just plain sad. I mean just like bang your head on a desk and hope it goes away sad. Loosing your best friend sad. It’s gonna so bad that I walk into school and I see all the Yankee Haters and Red Sox fans(bandwagon and legit) and I just go “Yea the Yanks lost, I’m almost getting used to it by now”. I’m almost afraid to wear any of my Yankees stuff to school in fear of having fruits and vegetables hurled at me at lunch like I’m a bad comedy act.

It’s not like these kids aren’t already bursting at the seams from laughing at the Yankees failure at playing the game. It’s like the Bombers have totally forgotten how to play baseball. The fielding errors, the missed opportunities, the horrendous base running are all playing gigantic roles in the Plight of the Pinstripes. Not to mention our farm system’s lack of skills. No wonder we don’t go down there for talent anymore.  Yes, one could argue that “they aren’t used to the pace of the MLB”, well that may be true, but baseball is baseball. If the basics are there, anyone can excel at any level of play.

We need a spark, and a spark quickly. Could Mussina’s outing against the equally pathetic and normally much better A’s be that spark? Well, we ended a 5 game skid with the win today and Mussina flashed better leather than I think the entire team combined has in the past few games. He only allowed 3 hits and no runs at all. I think the fact that the Yankees won, let alone shut out the A’s was enough to give some of the Yanks older fans some cardiac trouble. On NY Channel 9, they reported a huge spike in heart related trouble in the Manhattan and Bronx areas, so apparently it did.

Now being the optimistic and generally inexperienced high schooler that I am, I’m going to say that the Yankees could be showing signs of life. I think that this scenario could play out into a very cheesy Hollywood-like story, such as the one of the Indians in the Major League movies. They start off in the basement of the division and by some miracle of the Baseball Gods, we win the division and make the playoffs. Cheesy and overdone? You bet your boots it’s been overdone, in about every sports movie ever made there is always that team that overcomes every possible set back and wins the game by one run or one field goal or a touchdown. Almost every movie in the “Sports” category at Blockbuster has this plot as its main story line and people eat it up. So will the 2005 Yankees become a Blockbuster hit? Or will the outcome be worse than Alexander’s reviews? Only time will tell…

paragraphs first, thanks for the shout-out 🙂
I always love reading anything about the yankees, esp an optimistic one. In terms of editing it, try to break this up into smaller paragraphs, its easier to read than one big block. I liked everything you wrote about (lack of farm, possibility of A’s series pointing to better things, Major league Indians reference…). They’re all really good thoughts so I think if you wanted to revisit this, maybe you could break it up into different paragraphs, not just for easier readability, but also to maybe develop each one of those ideas a little more.
Nice job though. Go Yanks.

nice nice article man, avoid the slang e.g. “like”.  like is a bad word for any article.  looks like you got that spark u needed from good ol’ tino.  go yanks
