It finally happened.

No, I don’t believe it either.

Florida defeated Kentucky. A Billy Donovan-coached team defeated a better team late in the season in a close game!

I bet you all thought nobody was going to write a preview for the Pac-10 conference tournament. Well, here I am, writing a preview for the bastard stepchild of the power conferences. The Pac-10 is definitely the Ashlee Simpson of college sports, everyone thinks we’re cute but once we get on the national stage everyone wishes that our hotter sister (any other power conference) was there instead.

How can any sports fan not love college basketball’s March Madness? Unless you always root for the front runner, hate upsets, and enjoy the status quo in the world of sports (Yankees fans) you have to love this time of year.  It brings heated rivalries, buzzer beaters, do or die games, and upsets galore. All of this madness takes place before the NCAA tournament even begins.

Gerry McNamara hit six threes in the first half of the 2003 National Championship game against Kansas.  He was a freshman.  Saturday against Connecticut, the junior guard looked like he couldn’t throw a ball into the ocean, let alone the basket, shooting 2-10 from beyond the arc.  McNamara should have played better, but it’s not entirely his fault.

So here we are again.

The conference tournaments are just now starting. The mid-major teams are just beginning to be shown on TV. cbssportsline.com is just starting to write incorrect statements about college basketball.

With college basketball’s regular season winding down, I felt it was time for me to peg the two teams which I feel will create the most bracket disruption come March.  These two schools have all the qualities necessary to wear the “slipper” and I feel it is only a matter of time before you begin to hear names like Paul Marigney and Jamar Howard.  While these teams generally do not get to the Final Four, they usually find their way to the Sweet 16 and if the Gods are aligned perhaps the Elite Eight.  I think it is these “Cinderella” teams that make the NCAA Tournament the greatest sporting spectacle on the planet.  If you did not get the hint above and do not know the two teams I see causing the most bracket damage in March, let me reveal them to you now.

I heard it was college basketball season.

Am I wrong?

Isn’t this the time of year when we cherish the upsets, the stunning victories, the effort?

   One of the best rivalries throughout college basketball will be showcased once again on Wednesday, February 9th at 9pm on ESPN nationwide. The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils will battle for the 213th time since 1920. North Carolina leads the all-time series 122-90. There are only eight short miles that separate Chapel Hill from Durham, the Dean Dome from Cameron Indoors, ACC’s good from evil. Only eight miles separate these warriors, only eight miles separate mutual hatred, and only eight miles separate victory from failure. The college basketball world will be watching closely as these two titans of the hard court meet in Durham, North Carolina for the first of two season match-ups.

If you a measure a team by big games, Syracuse looks oh so small.  They have lost to their last three ranked opponents and were outplayed for most of the largest attended game in college basketball history against Notre Dame on Saturday.  In the thick of the most critical stretch of the season, with three straight ranked Big East foes ahead of them, Syracuse needs to start finishing strong.

I officially love hockey. Well, not exactly.

I can honestly say that I have never watched a hockey game from start to finish, I can’t name all the NHL teams nor am I familiar with more than just a handful of marquee players; and my idea of good hockey is Emilio Estevez’ 1992 flick Mighty Ducks.
