Locks of the Week |
[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. Vegas Vinny: I’ve for the Chargers this week for a very simple reason: they are a better team than the Vikings. The Chargers are an amazing 63-5 ATS when they win straight up on the road. If the Chargers can’t beat the lowly Vikings, then we’re going to get another press conference with LT shaking his head. The Eagles (a mediocre team at best) proved that you can stop Adrian Peterson, and when you do, there goes the Vikings offense. Note that SD is ranked #7 against the run this year.
If the Chargers (and specifically Philip Rivers) can not commit the dreaded turnover for 6 points the other way, then there’s no reason to believe the Vikings have a chance in hell in this one. I like this game so much, I’m putting $110 to win $100 on the Chargers (-7) (Balance = $1020)
BostonMac: Buffalo (+1.5) over Cincinnati. It didn’t work out for me last week, but I’m going with the home ‘dog again this week. These are two teams going in completely opposite directions. Buffalo is busy quietly putting together a decent season, even after their loss to New England when everyone wrote them off for dead. Meanwhile, Dick Jauron (a very underrated coach, by the way) not only has held the team together but also has helped Marshawn Lynch establish himself as one of the bright young stars of the league. Over in southern Ohio, however, Marvin Lewis’ tenure as Bengals coach appears to be coming to an end. The conservative approach to the Pittsburgh loss last week (e.g. kicking a field goal down 14-3, which in the best case scenario leaves you a TD and a 2-pt conversion away from a tie) and the inexcusable coaching move of having only 10 players on the field for a play in which they gave up a touchdown has been emblematic of the Bengals’ fall from grace. Look for Lynch to have a big day against the Bengals’ 28th-ranked rush defense, and for Buffalo to win the game outright. Let’s get back on the horse this week; $55 to win $50 on BUFFALO (+1.5).
(Balance = $1135)
Trevor F: Let me be the guy who breaks out the testicles and sets them on the table.
I am taking Indy. The Colts are getting 5 at home. I think the
defending Super Bowl Champions are going to play like a team with a chip
on their shoulder. They have to be pissed off that the media has already
awarded New England the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Indy beats New England
42-38 in a shootout and establishes that they are still the big dog in the
park. $55 on the Colts (+6) to win $50. (Balance = $1140)
RJ Warner: I know I’ve had horrible luck with the Saints all year, but they’ve been playing much better as of late. Jacksonville has been playing some outstanding defense, especially on the road. The Saints, though, have found their rythmn on offense, amd Drew Brees seems to have reclaimed his spot as one of the elite NFL quarterbacks after an awful start. The NFC South is still there for the taking, and the Saints need to start piling up victories to get back to the playoffs. A win over the Jags would help, and the low point spread (-3.5) should be easy to cover. Since I’ve missed the last few weeks, I’ll put $110 on the Saints (-3.5) to win $100 on it to try and catch up. (Balance = $1140)
Billy Fellin: I made this my lock of the week for a couple reasons. First off, the Chargers are hot as of late. Rivers has found his rhythm and Tomlinson is starting to figure out where the end zone is again, finally. Secondly, the Vikings really don’t have much of a threat on defense, or offense for that matter. Adrian Peterson is coming into his own, but the San Diego defense can handle him and that will basically shut down the Vikings offensive attack. If they could find a quarterback that might help the Vikes, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon, so I’m taking the Chargers (-7).
