Alex Ferguson talks about his emotions — if you’d seen the Penn State-Indiana game and later, the LSU-Auburn game — after Week 8 of the College Football Season.IMPRESSED
Alabama
Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, Tennessee got hit by an Alabama slammer on Saturday afternoon. After conceding 17 points in an exciting first half, the Tennessee defense shut up shop and let the offense put 17 points of its own in the second, giving `Bama its biggest victory over the Vols in 21 years. Next up for Saban? A match-up with LSU that’ll have the tongues wagging and the heart beating. We can’t wait.
Vanderbilt
After losing a close call to Georgia last week, it was nice to see that the upset-minded Commodores had their first major scalp of the season when they went on the road and beat South Carolina 17-6. Sure it was dull. But if you’re a Vandy fan, dull’s good…
LSU/Auburn
Exciting from the starting kick-off to Matt Flynn’s last second TD to Dominque Byrd that won the game, this stonker of an SEC match-up proves why the conference is the best in college football. Oozing passion from every play, Auburn and LSU battered the crap out of each other for 60 mins. I’m sad there had to be a winner.
Florida/Kentucky
Florida proved that they couldn’t cope with Andre Woodson and a high-octane Kentucky offense, and Kentucky proved that it’s like every other SEC defense – it can’t cope with either Tim Tebow or Percy Harvin. So what happened? We watched one of the best games of the year. Thank God it wasn’t on at the same time as the Auburn – LSU match-up.
Southern California
After being pretty rude about the Trojans for the last couple of Saturdays, the Trojans beat the crap of the Fighting Irish in a 38-0 blowout. Mark Sanchez made sure things weren’t close with a delicious 235 yard, four touchdown performance. But still let’s not get too carried away – it’s still Notre Dame. California, UCLA and, er, Arizona State will prove how good the Trojans really are.
Rutgers
After beating previously unbeaten Cincinnati, the Scarlet Knights did what they do best and knocked off #2 South Florida. Ray Rice was unbelievable, netting close to 200 yards rushing in a performance reminiscent of last season’s efforts. You thought Rutgers’ chances of netting a Big East title were over? Think again!
Oregon
For a moment I thought that Oregon was all about throwing the football or using the fleet-of-foot Dennis Dixon. After rushing for 465 yards, we’d like to change our opinion….and add that Oregon is probably the fifth-best team in the country.
UCLA
True, there’s nothing better than facing a team that’s already demorilised by its first loss of the season, but the Bruins really proved their worth in an excellent performance against Nate Longshore and the Cal Golden Bears. They caused four turnovers, running one of those back to the house for a touchdown, and are 4-0 in an incredibly competitive Pac-10.
Michigan
Again, I hate to say this, but Michigan impressed. After being 0-2 and jumping all over the “Lloyd Carr should be fired” bandwagon, I’d like to come off it now after Michigan came into a tough road game with the Illini – and won. Whilst it’s true that Illinois’ defense is no great shakes, the Illini’s spread offense could well have mammoth problems. In the second half, Michigan’s defense limited Ron Zook’s team to just three miserable points, and came out 27-17 winners.
UNMOVED
Ohio State
They did enough to win the game, but the two turnovers late on nearly killed them. Now, they are off to Happy Valley, where Penn State is still having trouble turning turnovers into TDs.
DEPRESSED
Penn State
They played badly in a terrible game but still managed to win. If they play this badly against Ohio State, then the students will be leaving at halftime….
Florida/Miami
Could it truly have been this bad? After nine turnovers, the answer is a resounding yes.
South Carolina
After beating Kentucky and Georgia, South Carolina then shocked the world by looking distinctly Division III against Vandy. Is 26 yards rushing and four turnovers the sort of form you’d want to see from a team vying for an SEC East title? On this basis, nope.
Minnesota
After losing to Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Northwestern, it couldn’t have gotten any worse for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. After losing to Division I-AA North Dakota State, it just did.
One reply on “Impressed- Depressed- Unmoved: Week 8 of the College Football season”
I thought Penn State played very well actually. Morelli quietly had another good game, the running game took awhile to get going, but the receivers made great plays and DWill was making plays like in 05. It is tough to stop a spread offense with a player like hardy at 6’5 240 pounds… king obviously had his hands full at cornerback and showed he has a lot to work on if he wants to leave for the nfl after this year. connor and lee were quiet, yes, but other people stepped up, most notibly hayes who forced lewis, a pretty damn good qb also, to fumble 2 times in the closing minutes of the 4th to seal the victory. indiana is no walk over. a young penn state team got a win on the road. it was a step in the right direction. big game this weekend. i personally think penn state will play very well being at home, the biggest question i think is what osu team shows up for the game? ill be screaming loudly in the student section! lets go state!
