NHL Power Rankings for Jan. 29- 2007

Nashville is starting to run away with the power rankings. Meanwhile, the top nine did not change. In the middle of the pack, Pittsburgh has finally overtaken Boston, thanks in part to Sidney Crosby lightning up the Coyotes like a firework. Ottawa continues to impress, while the Flyers are talking with Forsberg about his future. Where did your team end up?

1 (1) 36-12-3
Want another reason why the Sabres will not end up dealing Biron? Look at Chris Mason in Nashville. He leads the team in wins, GAA, and save percentage. Oh, did I mention he’s the “backup”.
2 (2) 33-14-4
It’s looks as though the Sabretrain may slow for a bit, but it’s good to struggle now, then in the playoffs.
3 (3) 33-17-0 Have you noticed a pattern yet? The top three teams have backups that could serve as starters somewhere else.
4 (4) 31-12-8 Pronger’s back earlier than expected, and Francois Beauchemin has also returned. This team is getting healthy, that is not what San Jose or Nashville wanted to hear.
5 (5) 31-14-6 Dominik Hasek turns 42 this week. How did the Wings celebrate? Just allowing only twelve shots to Colorado on Sunday.
6 (6) 30-15-5
Whereas the top three teams each have two good young goalies, both New Jersey and Detriot are getting the job done with future Hall-of-Fame forty-plus goalies. Broudeur is in the middle of his best season in his career, even better than the 2001 campaign. 30 wins, 1.99 GAA, and a Save pct. of .929, means the Veznia is well on its way to the Meadowlands.
7 (7) 29-19-2
Mike Modano is close to a return, making the Pacific that much more scary.
8 (8) 29-16-8 Marian Hossa is still my top pick for the Hart.
9 (10) 29-20-2 Jason Spezza’s back. That should be enough to send a chill down everyone in the East’s spine. The Senators are for real.
10 (11) 28-19-3 Markus Naslund ans the Sedin twins have found their game.
11 (9) 27-18-5 Sheldon Souray is fed up with the recent play of the Habs. Going so far as to call his teammates out in the media. Things in Quebec should get très intresting.
12 (12) 26-17-6 Good news Flames fans, we have found Alex Tanguay.
13 (13) 26-20-6 David Tannabe’s well play may have a few other guys in other places soon.
14 (15) 26-21-4 Manny Fernandez will return to the lineup early this week.
15 (14) 26-23-2 Johan Holmqvist may send Marc Denis packing with his strong play as of late.
16 (20) 23-17-8
Sidney Crosby is a God to be feared and worshiped. Just remember that when the Pens make a huge upset in the first round of the playoffs.
17 (17) 24-21-4
Jaromir Jagr is going to be rested for the playoffs; this could get interesting on Broadway.
18 (16) 24-21-4
Jose Theodore played great Sunday, the only problem is, the Avs just quit when he’s in net.
19 (18) 24-22-4 Ryan Smyth is trying to will the Oilers in the playoffs by himself. It’s not going to work.
20 (21) 23-21-6 The Leafs are top five when it comes to special teams. They’re problem is health lately. Also, could Darcy Tucker be out the door soon? Gigure, were you listening to that?
21 (22) 23-21-5 They’re in last place in the Atlantic after it was learned this week that the Flyers will be relegated to the ECHL. Honestly, they’re a train wreck, and if it wasn’t for the Flyers, they would be in their most comfortable spot, dead last.
22 (19) 22-21-4 How are they even over .500? Thomas and Toivonen are horrible goalies.
23 (23) 23-25-2 What’s that bright light in the desert? Oh, that’s just Mikael Tellqvist getting lit up by Sidney Crosby. I haven’t even seen Christmas trees that were as lit up as he was.
24 (24) 21-22-7 A hearty congrats to Eric Fehr for scoring his first NHL goal.
25 (25) 20-22-8
This week’s contestant on Wheel of Lines is Keith (Tay-chook) Tkachuk. The game is simple, pick a line, and try to stay on it.
26 (27) 20-25-5
Fredrik Norrena looked great in goal last week, I wonder if LeBron James will be their goalie this week.
27 (26) 19-22-10 Rostislav Olesz has elevated his play since his return from the AHL.
28 (28) 18-25-7
Rene Bourque’s nightmare season continues, with a demotion to rehab his ankle.
29 (29) 17-29-6 It’s almost that point with the Kings where players will injure themselves, so they won’t been seen in public as someone associated with the Kings.
30 (30) 12-32-5 How do you fix the Flyers? Trade Forsberg, force Hatcher, Zhitnik, and Knuble into retirement. Then cut everyone but Jeff Carter, Simon Gange, and R.J. Umberger, and start over.

I’m going to make a prediction… The Ducks will lose in the first round of the playoffs. They won’t be able to score enough big goals and their defense and goaltending(which could carry them far, don’t get me wrong)will crack. Plus, the Honda Center is the worst hockey atmosphere I’ve ever been in for a team about to tie an NHL record for best unbeaten streak to start a season. Those people had no clue what was going on. Some big girl had a cowbell, that was it. It was the least intimidated I ever felt in an opposing team’s jersey. My wife would’ve kicked anybody’s ass in that building and she wanted a piece of Cowbell Girl.

Ducks… I agree, the West is loaded this year. San Jose is deep, as is Nashville. But what you don’t see is that at least 3 teams from the Northwest is going to make it, and although their records look like a pile of dog leftovers, they’re going to be tough outs. Plus there is Detriot, and they honestly scare me.
