The Surly Legend Of Bobby Baseball

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter–Martin Luther King Jr.

Bobby Baseball is not a real person. He is made up of media accounts, water cooler conversations and  privy moments of underlying sheer hatred. There are many other questions that I would pose to any journalist regarding the treatment of Barry Bonds. Why is he so hated? What did he do to merit said hatred? Will the person who has seen the grand jury testimony, please stand up? The two books that were written about Barry’s steroid use have not one stitch of proof. How come there aren’t more Jose Cansecos? What I want America to understand is this is not about steroids, it’s about the witch hunt. Blacks have had heroes dragged, stabbed, assassinated, hung, ridiculed, ostracized, falsely accused and nullified. These are some of the reasons why some Blacks come to the defense of Bonds. The way he and other athletes are treated in the media conjures images Blacks are sick of seeing and feeling. Lyle Alzado, Bill Romanowski, Ken Caminiti, Jason Giambi (Comeback Player of the Year? What?). These are some of the few athletes who weren’t branded with as hot a tool as the one Barry gets stuck on his muscular chest every single time he is interviewed. Could you deal with the scrutiny? Could you deal with the judgemental scolding saliva of drunk fans and their misled children alike?

Bobby Baseball you’ve made it ridiculously obvious that you care about the integrity of baseball, so pull up a chair and let’s have a conversation. There are many people–mostly Blacks–that are going to come to Barry’s defense simply because of the ludicrously hateful treatment of him ten and even fifteen years earlier in his enigmatic career. What do you say to this?

Bobby Baseball: Black people continuously pull out the race card whenever something like this happens. The fact that people want Barry Bonds silenced has nothing to do with race. He has never let America into his living room so why should we care about him anyway? I don’t know what surly means, but if surliness walked into the door right now, it would be in the shape of Barry Bonds. He was never a good teammate. He has this chip on his shoulder, so I don’t give a damn about him anyway. I wish he would go away now! He doesn’t deserve to break Babe Ruth’s record anyway! You people need to get over it. There is no racism in America. Blacks are dominating sports and entertainment like never before. Why are you people always complaining anyway?

MT: Bobby that was funny. Hank Aaron is the record holder. It’s crazy that people nullify Hammerin’ Hanks incomparable accomplishments, especially in light of what he went through. I appreciate your candor. I would answer your question this way: When some African Americans see the passion of a wounded bull that some segments of society choose to discredit Bonds with, some African Americans are taken aback. It’s the scrutiny that pains people. If you back anyone into a corner they are always going to come out swinging. The questions that some members of the media ask Bonds have nothing to do with what he does on the field or steroids for that matter. Remember when he was seen dressing in drag for the sake of bringing his team together because of all the negative attention he has received lately? It’s not his team’s fault. They have jobs to do also. Keep them out of it. Another thing is that this guy is a baseball player. There is no reason why old ladies with weighted purses want to smash Bonds and bloody his face. Hypothetically, can you see them picketing outside with their crooked wigs? I’ve never seen so many teeth on the ground and crunchy sand tasting faces. Why do some people love Babe Ruth so much and didn’t even see him play?

BB: He played at a time when life was simple. He was an outstanding player who was worthy of the legendary status he still receives today. He is the best baseball player of all time, no question!

MT: Hey Bobby, are you aware that Ty Cobb called the Babe a nigger? Research that. Another thing is that the Babe played at a time when there were no minorities to speak of playing. There was rampant gambling and alcohol abuse. Pitchers didn’t come off the mound until their arms were falling off. What has baseball done to bring light to this shameful moment in it’s history?

BB: Baseball has righted this wrong by first letting Blacks in baseball and then by retiring Jackie Robinson’s number. April 15, is proclaimed Jackie Robinson Day. We don’t have to go back fifty years. What happened then is irrelevant.

MT: No! No! No! It’s never irrelevant when humans and their future legacies lay in the balance. Has any White player had to go through anything remotely close to what any of the top three Black home run hitters or any of the pioneering Blacks had to go through?  Hell no! Big Mac tucked his tail and ran home when asked a simple question. How come he wasn’t vilified? How come people didn’t question what he was doing at the time he set the record? Is 73 really more than 61 anyway? Athletes are so much stronger now than in years past. Why was Barry suspect? Big Mac couldn’t carry Barry’s jock when it came to comparing their respective talents, so why in the hell would Barry be jealous of him? Seriously? What is this cult figure thing anyway? While baseball has retired Jackie’s number and named awards after Blacks, why does baseball think that rectifies past wrong doing? People who should have been rewarded are dead! Baseball then gives awards to the recipient’s grandchildren? Only their families end up knowing the true impact of their respective lives. Buck O’Neil wasn’t even inducted into the Hall of Fame! That’s crazy! The game’s past is tainted. Every record set before April 15, 1947 should have an asterisk. That would be a truly grand gesture by Major League Baseball. If they really cared about minorities, that’s what they should do.

BB: You OK there tough guy? Why are you so angry? Friggin get over it. The past is the past. Barry is a cheater and that’s it! Babe Ruth was a true American. No way baseball should do such a stupid thing. They would be slapping their true fans in the face.

MT: That last statement is a sad one Bobby. We are all Americans period. We should all be affected by the unfortunate happenings in America’s past. It never goes away. It will always be relevant, no matter who chooses to push our collective past under a guilt stained rug because of defense mechanism driven nullification. If some people were more affected by what happens to their fellow man without all this egotistical and judgmental ignorance that is rampant presently, maybe this world would start to make a change for the better. Our children deserve the truth about anyone we celebrate. Just like we pick apart an athletes every move, we should do the same with anyone who has a real job. Money or the fact that they are on TV should no longer matter. After all, we are who really put them there.

America what is going on in your life? Are you the best you can be for your children? Have you lied, stolen or cheated?

It’s truly funny how some segments of society choose to conveniently forget about the misgivings of some of their most coveted "heroes." George Washington cannot tell a lie and chopping down a cherry tree? Those are the stories we choose to educate our kids with? You have got to be kidding me. He and most of our early public figures owned slaves, and had people killed at will. I won’t even bring up Christopher Columbus. Why is this relevant to a home run hitter you are probably asking yourselves? Because if you won’t admit that these so called great people had their faults, then you will never admit that some of the criticism of Bonds is deeply entrenched in racism. It’s like the whole OJ thing. Blacks knew that he possibly did it. How many Blacks come to his defense now? Not many, because it’s not his guilt that had Blacks overjoyed and applauding. Blacks have seen so many of our families saddened by jury nullification, ie., Medgar Evers, Emmit Till or the four little girls who died in the church bombing. Let’s not forget about the cops who got off after beating Rodney King to a bloody swollen pulp. There was video evidence! What could be more convicting? Yes King was a criminal, but did he commit a capital offense?

All Blacks are truly saying when it came to OJ was about time. These are the stories that–if we weren’t there–our parents told us. It’s sad that we had to stoop to such a shallow level regarding OJ, but most Blacks are sick and tired of our heroes being scrutinized like they are the clown mascot. This is what pains us. Just in the past year, America has made Ron Artest (mental illness and bad choices), Barry Bonds(alleged steroid use and having the temerity of  constantly telling tabloid driven journalists and reporters to kiss his butt), and Terrell  Owens (egotism and stupidity)–the most hated people in America and none of them has committed a hardcore crime. Is America really this stupid to make their misgivings the hot topic stories of the past year? Is the Duke story going to get more press as the aforementioned athletes? Yeah right! Keep poking the rattlesnake in the corner if you want to. Eventually he’s gonna get your ass and it ain’t gonna be nice when it does. Doesn’t America see that booing these dudes doesn’t help? Obviously, it inspires them. They have all reveled in your hatred. That is sad. Sports has become sickening. Everyone is accountable. All these so called journalists, being the ultimate epitome of surliness, are practically calling for Barry’s head like he’s hypothetically raped their daughter. Who are they to judge? What is going on in their lives? Are they raping someone else’s daughter? How would they like to constantly be asked dumb ass questions over and over and over and over again for fifteen plus years? I just don’t understand. All of this is relevant when it comes to Bonds. Why else would baseball make Bonds the lightening rod for steroids when the whole era was supposedly tainted? That’s like saying the the Eagles sucked because of Terrell Owens. BS!  Baseball is feeding off of the signals that mainstream America is giving them. I thought chicks dug the long ball? Ha! There is no way that baseball didn’t know that some players were juicing up. Like I said before, everyone is accountable.

If Barry is found to have taken steroids, I will be the first to slam him!

BB: Can I speak now?

MT: No! I’m kidding Bobby. Please speak your piece.

BB: Are we still talking about baseball? Where are you going with this big guy? Big Mac hit 49 homers as a rookie. He was always known for hitting home runs. Barry never hit more than 47 before he hit 73. Barry can’t be that good. It’s just not human. When America watches sports, we want to forget about our lives and how minimal they might be. Mickey Mantle had his faults, but how could you not identify with him? Whites are sick and tired of always being called racists. Why do you care how Barry is characterized anyway? He’s a cheat! Why would you want to defend him?

MT: It’s kind of cool that you are asking the questions Bobby, you are kind of good at this. Bobby, (sigh) you and other folk have to understand that all Blacks want is to have more than one hero that our children can look up to. Inspiration builds confidence and a soulful consciousness. Kids need to see positive images of the people they want to emulate. Michael Jordan is no longer playing. As horrible as Brett Favre has been the last couple of years, most people still want him on the field–and rightfully so–because once he is gone, he is gone. We want to hang on to our heroes in a similar fashion. When Mike played for Washington, all you heard were questions about the surmised tainting of his legacy. The scrutiny just isn’t there for all athletes. The broadcasters look the other way even after Brett’s fifth straight pass ends up completed to the wrong team! Why should he get a pass? Randall Cunningham got booed after passing for four hundred twelve yards in a narrow playoff loss to Chicago in the infamous Fog Bowl. That’s BS. As good as Randall was, most people think he sucked. Quarterbacks with comparable numbers are comfortably resting because their exploits were enough to get them voted into the Hall of Fame. Compare his numbers to Aikman. There is a comfort level that most great White quarterbacks are able work with. What would Cunningham’s career been like if he was afforded the offensive weapons that Troy had at his leisure? Look what happened when he had Randy Moss to throw to? The overall points Minnesota scored that year are still a record. Scrutiny. How come there isn’t a Black quarterback that totally sucks and still has a job? I can name numerous White signal callers who are below par. There is also this idea that a running quarterback can’t win the Super Bowl. People rather watch the athleticism in amazement and not the athlete commanding the team. The team is what it is all about right? General managers and player personnel heads, give these freakish athletes top flight receivers and a line. Watch them flourish. Do you want them to be successful or not? How many pocket passers in the history of the sport haven’t won the big game? The numbers are staggering. People open your minds and collectively think of what is right and what is wrong. What is truth and what is speculative. What is real and what is not so real. When great athletes fail individually, the maggot infested can of snake scaled scrutiny rears it’s ugly head.

Who are you to judge?

When and if Ken Griffey Jr. approaches the record, will people humble themselves or will they scream falsehoods? Griffey Jr. was once the best player in baseball. He hit baseballs out the park with the same frequency as  Big Mac when he was in Oakland and Griffey was with Seattle. There wasn’t any steroid talk then. Griffey’s sweet swing was a  testament in itself. Bobby, I thank you for listening to my rant. The truth needs to be told, not sold. America has to understand that everyone should not be painted with the same bull crap smellin’ brush. If you hate yourself, you are entitled to do so. Knock yourself out. Please get it in your thick head that everyone will not have the same opinion of you regarding Barry Bonds or Bobby Baseball for that matter. Change this BS that is driving the present media! There is much work to be done. Are you up to it? Do you care? Are you strong enough to handle such responsibility. Is this the Roman Empire revisited? What happened to Rome? It’s all relative. Each one teach one. There are kids watching! They deserve better.

America is this too deep for you? Do you understand the point that I’m trying to make?

Black people too can be way overzealous in their defense of Black heroes. If they mess up, Blacks should call them out and tell it like it is!

Everyone is accountable!

When Barry breaks the record– the one you think is real and the one that is real. Will you hate him more? Why? What happens if he breaks the single season record again? How will you react? Take a long look in the mirror without blinking and see what your image morphs into.

Are you scared now?

oh great, another racist conspiracy Another racsit conspiracy, fun. You know the reason why hes hated: He’s a jerk to his teammates, the media, and the fans. Those people you listed above didn’t have the attitude problem of Barry. Your saying that blacks cant have heros? What about Griffey? He is LOVED by the media and fans. What about Derrek Lee? Hes LOVED by media and fans. What about Pujols? Hes LOVED by media and fans. What about Dontrelle? He’s LOVED by media and fans. Bonds has benn hated for a long time, long before he became a star.

race card conspiracy revisited? Thank you for taking the time to read my article and actually responding. What I say to your response is this, I’m not talking about stars. I’m speaking of timeless athletes that Black fathers can tell their sons about. The ones you’ve mentioned are great examples. With the exception of Griffey, others you’ve mentioned are still learning to take their lumps. As far as the racist conspiracy comment, name 5 Whites that have gone through the meat grinder as the three I mentioned in the last 50 years. I have two in mind. Can you name them and possibly more? Wasn’t Ted Williams surly? How come that’s not mentioned? I guess you think that these overpaid superathletes are supposed to take punishment that us puny regular guys would cry to our mommy’s over huh? What about their children and the rest of their families? Do they matter? I guess not. Even Rocker did not deserve the media treatment he received. There I gave you one. 🙂 Thanks again.

i understand he doesn’t deserve it i understand he doesn’t deserve it, but i udnerstand why he could be treated that way. I’m one of those people who think Barry Bonds is treated unfair by the media, BUT i do not think it has anything to do with race. Just becasue something bad happens to a black athlete, it doesn’t mean it happened cause hes black. People who start conpsiracies like this only help FURTHER racism in sports.

Racism in sports Do you see the hate mail Barry Receives? Have you ever met him? How do you know what he’s like as a person? Did the media abhor Bonds before steroids were even an issue? Besides John Rocker and Pete Rose to a lesser extent, when does the media attack White athletes with as much passionate vigor? Some Whites just don’t get it. Not all, but some. I’m not claiming to be this Barry Bonds lover of sorts but I’m a member of the media. I see and hear it every day. Why do most people believer everything they hear anyway. That’s what is so ridiculous. People hate Bonds just because the media tells them to. Are people really that stupid? Don’t we all have our own individual minds? Get real people! Or get called out!

Okay, but.. Okay, but what proof do you have that makes this a race issue? The point of your article was that its a race issue. The only thing you’ve said to back yourself up is “what whtie players besides Rocker and Rose”. Well I’ll answer you with a question, who else besides Bonds for blacks?

List Terrell Owens, Ron Artest, Venus and Serena Williams, Ray Lewis, Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Chris Webber(The entire Fab Five for that matter) Chris Jackson (I won’t attempt to spell his Muslim name) Any athlete who fights besides a hockey player (that’s the biggest hypocrisy) Mike Tyson (would you tell your daughter to go up to a man’s hotel room at 2 in the morning?). That’s all that come to mind. I’m sure there’s much more. I in no way are saying all of them has to do with race. Tell me what is it then. How come most White athletes escape the negative perception associated with most of these aforementioned Blacks?

Checkmateracecard One question for you. Besides Tyson(rape)and Lewis(murder), has any of these athletes truly did anything wrong that old ladies, who know nothing about sports, hear about them? That’s why I say it’s racism. Just like when ESPN leads off with Bonds, Artest, or Owens…instead of this Duke (alleged) assault. I write for Blacksportsnetwork.com. We will not write a story about the Duke incident until we acquire all facts. That’s the difference. We don’t care about the court of public opinion because it’s irrelevant. Facts are just that, FACTS. Show me some facts and I will write. Show me a soap opera, and I’ll tell my girl to watch it during the afternoon. What happened to men being men?

well…. Terrell Owens, Ron Artest, Ray Lewis, and Allen Iverson? We all know ZERO of them has to do with race. Williams sisters is the only one i can partailly agree one.
And no, white athletes don’t escape negative perception. Look at Mark Chmura, Ryan Leaf, Kenny Rogers, John Rocker, Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, all white Duke basketball players,A.J. Pierzynski, Phil Mickelson,Kurt Busch, Jeff Kent, Colin Montgomerie, Todd Bertuzzi, and most importantly Roger Maris (he went through more than Barry Bonds did chasing the record.
I have more if you want some. I jsut think this is enough for a point.

well… “I write for Blacksportsnetwork.com”

If i were to say i write for the Whitepsortsnetwork.com, i would prob get my post deleted and get my account deleted.

Look at Rush Limbaugh, hes white and gets fired for saying McNabb is only rated good cause hes black.
BUT THEN
Bryant Gumbel says Olympics don’t mean anything cause theres no black people and nothing happens to him.
DOUBLE STANDARD.

Blacksportsnetwork.com None of the athletes you mentioned went through as much as TO, Artest and Bonds. Seriously, you are kidding right? They still every so often lead off sportscenter. Todd Bertuzzi almost killed someone in front of the world. He deserves as much BS as he can get. What he did was wrong. The fact that I write for Blacksportsnetwork means nothing. Have I written one piece about the Duke scandal? No! I want all the facts before I even think of pulling out a race card. Was Rush Limbaugh right? Did Donovan go to the Superbowl that year? Don’t snip and snipe. We are talking about the media’s negative affection with Bonds. There is no way he should be so vilified. If he chooses to stick needles in his ass, that’s his choice. Like I said in the article. All records set before 1947 are irrelevant because no Blacks, no Latinos, no Asians were permitted to play. Why don’t people get that? Level the playing field and see what happens. Damn, Josh Gibson hit 780 homeruns at least. Sadaharah(sp) Oh hit more in Japan. Are most writers for the major outlets White? Yes. I’m trying to get into the field. As long as I write creative and constructive pieces, I’ll move up. For now, I’m glad I work for BSN, I get to write whatever I want and my fans like my work. They are of all colors and creeds. I will never come to the aid of every Black person who cries racism. Some Whites are quick to say that it’s not a race issue regardless if the facts show that theres evidence of such. Why would you co-sign for someone you don’t even know anyway. That’s just ridiculous. I would never.

Uk wat “None of the athletes you mentioned went through as much as TO, Artest and Bonds.”

Theres where your wrong. I’ll tell you why the Barry Bonds thing isn’t racism. Roger Maris went through even WORSE in 1961 and uk wat, he wasnt even taking steroids. Roger Maris was constantly purposely MISQUOTED by the media, we know what Barry says isn’t misquoted cause his interviews are on tape. So Barry got a siringe thrown at him? Okay, Maris got a CHAIR thrown at him! MLB even put an asterick on Maris’s record, they never did anything like that to Barry. Maris went through worse and he did WITHOUT pissing off his teammates at the same time too.

Maris In saying that, you are somewhat right. BUT, did Maris get racist hate mail to boot? This is what all of you who are taking their time out to comment are forgeting. You can minimalize it, trivilize it, nullify it, whatever, but the truth is truth. It’s that element that I’m speaking of, not something obscurely objective.

He is one guy.

What happened to Maris was sick! It shows the disgusting fanaticism in sports. That is the element that gets off just because they think they can act like 2 year old clowns because they spend their money to buy a ticket. These people are the same who scream integrity? HA! Where’s the integrity in their lives?

i agree with you I think we both agree that what Barry Bonds has gone through has been horrible. I jsut don’t see the racism, i think its just the media wanting something to write about. Had Hank Aaron gone through this crap, then I’d agree with you. I think Barry ebing black could have maybe a little to do with it, i just think the fact hes been hated for so long ahs to say something

Had Hank gone through this crap? You must be in your 20s or early 30s. Hank Aaron to this day still receives hate mail. He was a strong man who dealt with racism because he had to. You are totally missing my point. Whites do not have to deal with the fact that they are White when they play a "game". The media should be more creative then having to write foolishness about Bonds every day. I just don’t agree. We have a real popular site because we don’t recycle garbage about athletes. You HAVE to be creative. The fact that America wants to hear about Bonds everyday is nothing more than sick hypocrisy. I bet if one of these Bonds haters caught his record breaking home run ball they wouldn’t throw it back into the field. Listen, the fact that we’ve got into this lengthy debate is testament that racism is still rampant. Get this. If these Duke players are found to not have touched this girl and are found not guilty, I will slam the girl who falsely accused them. We at Blacksportsnetwork.com want to write truthful journalism. We don’t tell people who they can like or speculate on what an athlete does. That’s where I fault the mainstream media. There is nothing wrong with wanting to see proof and facts with our own eyes.

well.. “Whites do not have to deal with the fact that they are White when they play a “game”.”

Yeah, but off the field they have to be more careful. Look at the whole Duke thing, no DNA evidence, wat happenes? Sitll no season, and still no coach. Also, still lost jobs for all those seniors. A black girl lies about beign raped by white men, case continues. But, not the case for black men….

A white girl accuses of being raped by Kobe, case over and shes ridiculed. (Why not for Duke case?)

White women killed by O.J. and hes innocent.

Leonard Little KILLS a white women drunk driving, hes still playing.

Shelden Williams accused of raping a white girl as a senior in high school, case mysteriously dropped and he still goes to Duke. (Wait, didn’t Duke penalize their whtie lacrosse player?)

21st century You are really getting crazy. Blacks have been wrongly accused and killed for the 4 hundred years they have been here and you bring up cases in this century? You are totally missing my point again. I WILL NOT DEFEND ANYONE WHO DID SOMETHING CRIMINAL AFTER I HAVE SEEN COURT RECORDS. Do you understand that. You are just coming to the defense of Whites. I am not. Leonard Little should have been thrown in jail. The other cases I’m not familiar with, so I’ll reserve comment. This Duke case is not over. I’ll reserve comment on that also. I will say this. IF THE DUKE TEAM IS FOUND NOT GUILTY AFTER ALL THE FACTS ARE PRESENTED IN AN ETHICAL MANNER, I WILL SLAM THE GIRL IN ANY STORY I WRITE. Again, do you understand that. You never commented on Hank or Barry getting hate mail. Nullification! I’m trying to be objective here, you are totally one sided. Keep proving my point.

OJ Let me add this. OJ was guilty. If you read my story you would have seen that. Any other case where "accusations" are involved are just that until all the facts are presented.

This is America. I believe in the justice system because of all the scrutiny they are under.

Come On That first paragraph amazes me. Nobody got more abuse than Jason Giambi. His leaked testimony included an admission to steroid use and was in play with the media and fans well before the worst Bonds revelations were even announced. Saying that Jason recieved some kind of pass for being white is not only misleading, it’s insulting.  I’m sick of this B.S. Instead of trying to all look at each other as equals, white, black, whatever, we just keep digging trenches deeper and deeper against each other. Giambi gets cheered at home and booed on the road. Same with Bonds. Bonds’ abuse is heavier because of the record he pursues An assualt on Giambi would be on a much larger scale if he was going after anything of signifgance in the record book. That’s literally all it is.

One more thing.

“Has any White player had to go through anything remotely close to what any of the top three Black home run hitters or any of the pioneering Blacks had to go through?”

You say no.

I say Roger Maris. White dude, remember?

He lost weight, his hair, someone called his house bragging that he’d kidnap his kids.

For what?

Chasing a record.

Maris I totally agree with you! Do not get it twisted. Anything about Giambi’s pursuing any kind of record is speculative at best. Maris is one guy. What happened to Maris was BS! I’m a Yankee fan, believe me I know! Giambi isn’t in the news every day and hasn’t been asked dumb ass questions for 15 plus years. That’s my gripe with Bonds. I met the guy in Atlantic City when he played with the Pirates. He certainly didn’t seem surly to me. Meeting the guy is proof that what the media says does not mean anything in some cases. Just because they say hate Bonds, I’m supposed to? Hell no! Another thing, I’m in it for all of us but I will not be told what to write and what not to write. I just won’t do the BS usual stuff and put my spin on a story. I write facts. I just want to hear one White person admit that there is racism! Just one! I admit that there are Black people who suck, why can’t Whites? Until then, this society will not be productive..it will only continue to slide deeper into the mud!

Come on I’m white. There are plenty of white people who suck. There are plenty of black people who suck. There, happy? That has nothing to do with your prior argument. I just don’t see how Bonds has anything to do with racism!!! He is chasing the most coveted, most famous record in baseball, I mean he is one season’s worth of home runs away from breaking that record! AND HE CHEATED TO DO IT! THAT is why people hate Barry Bonds. Besides that he is portrayed in the media as an asshole, which may affect what people think of him, the main reason is because he CHEATED, or at least people believe he did (I am one of them). Hank Aaron created that record fair and square, on talent alone, no supplements needed. Yes, he had to go through a lot, but that was also, what 30 years ago? When racism was more abundant than now. Bonds is being targeted and questioned and hated because he CHEATED to gain his prominence. He cheated himself, the game, and the fans. Why he is cheered at home? Because a lot of Giants fans are ignorant, and just go to the stadium because it’s a nice place. And where would the Giants be without Barry Bonds? That’s why they still cheer him. If they knew or cared about the integrity of the game of baseball, they would not like him as much. This all is about Barry’s dishonesty, NOT BECAUSE HE IS BLACK!!!!!!! I was a fan of Barry Bonds before I heard about the steroids and was convinced that he used them. I can’t morally like someone like that. That cheats to get ahead. His race plays no part.

(apologies to any Giants fan who is not one of the ignorant ones)

OK Is there racism in the US and in sports today? ABSOLUTELY. Is the media’s handling of Bonds connected to his skin color? NO. THIS STORY SELLS PAPERS. Giambi came clean in a press conference (sort of), Canseco admitted to using, has Bonds in any way cleared the air? Until Bonds either says “Hey I used steroids I’m sorry” or “I did not use steroids and here is my evidence” the media is going to just continue to needle him. A couple years ago at the all star game Jim Grey asked Rose about his gambling. Why? Because at that point he had not made his case and it was still one of the biggest stories in baseball.

Could some ignorant writers be attacking Bonds because he is black? YES. Please remember that it is most likely not the media sending him hate mail, but the ignorant people in this country. But I would say most just write these stories because people are looking to find out if he really used roids. Not, “Hey look they are tearing down another black athlete, isn’t this fun!” I would say most are just plain old sick and tired of this and just want to focus on baseball.

The Duke story is a terrible and revolting story that’s why news outlets (mainly sport news) don’t lead with it. Rape is a vile, dispicable crime that is a violation of a persons  HUMAN rights. Is it more newsworthy than TO, Bonds, or Artest? Yes. But I ask you this, when you tune in to watch sports is the first thing you want to see a story about a woman getting raped by 3 men? Most people just don’t like to hear about something so horrible happening to a person, so people will change the channel. Therefor ratings go down, then ESPN loses money, then ESPN alters their reporting. Do you see what I am getting at? All of this has to do with making money either by selling papers or boosting ratings. It has very little to do with race.

Bonds cheating J.D. I thank you for your honest comments. What about the hate mail? That has yet to be answered by anyone on this site. When I say hate mail. I mean the ape stuff and the N-word stuff. Do White athletes have to deal with that? If any of you read my article, you’ll see that if I read grand jury testimony that Bonds cheated, then I’ll SLAM him. I just don’t do the he say she say stuff. I want to hear a player say Bonds is shooting up. I want to hear a coach or a former coach say Bonds is juicing. Until I see that, I’m skeptical. That is my opinion. I’ve seen too many people falsely accused of bs because of whatever reason. I don’t care if Bonds is running for president of the USA, he doesn’t deserve any of this stuff. He’s just a baseball player right? It’s just a game right? Barry was hated way before any of this steroid stuff came to light. It’s crazy how it comes to light now. I thought "CHICKS DUG THE LONGBALL?" You have got to be kidding me. What is this integrity that people speak of? What about greenies? They make you hype so you can catch up to the first pitch as well as the last. Like I said in the article. THERE WERE NO MINORITIES PLAYING IN MLB TO SPEAK OF BEFORE 1947! How come in that little time minorites infiltrated the top ten. Why is 73 way more than 61 anyway? I’m one to ask questions. I ask questions of all races, even my own. Sorry but I won’t defend someone just because he’s Black. I don’t expect all Blacks to defend me. Why do you all defend the media’s treatment of Barry like your family members are writing these stories. I just don’t understand that. You have no idea what the agenda of any of these writers or fans for that matter have. Speak for yourselves, not the masses!

ScubaSteve I’ve been a member of the media for quite some time now. I have colleagues that are cynics, sychophants and some that are objective. I just find it interesting that the most hated people in sports happen to be black. I’m an Eagles fan and I’m sad to see T.O. go. I would have done the same as Ron Artest. Especially in the heat of the moment. Ricky Williams gets crushed for smoking weed when many of the people reading and writing for this site do exactly that. Do you see where I’m coming from? Why do we crush these athletes because they make ridiculous amounts of money? I just think it’s counterproductive to where we as a society needs to get to. Instead, we poke and poke and poke and poke, and then wonder why these people hate us. It just doesn’t make any sense. I want more. I want more for my children. I hate when I’m covering a game and this drunk guys son is screaming and spitting all over my neck. That seems to be the norm. Fans need to get over themselves and admit that some are total azzholes. Something just seems amiss to me. Maybe Whites look at the media differently than Blacks. You can’t discount the feeling Blacks get when their kids’s heroes are constantly being slammed on a daily basis. I WANT TO SEE PROOF! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT? Everyone out there that settles for the media’s portrayal, more power to you, but you are gonna have to hear from people like me who see things a lil differently. No it’s all about race for me, it’s about fairness. Could you deal with what Bonds is going through? WILL THE PERSON OR PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY READ THE GRAND JURY TESTIMONY PLEASE STAND UP AND TELL THE WORLD WHAT IT SAYS! Until then, Bonds is innocent until proven guilty. Forget what you all say. Conte could have made so much money if he came out of jail snitching. Why hasn’t he? People understand that there are two sides to every story, not just the one you want to believe!

UGH Do White players have to deal with racist hate mail? NO. NONE OF US ARE SAYING THAT THEY DO. We are all just trying to point out to you that the media’s treatment of bonds HAS LITTLE OR NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE!! Why can’t YOU understand that?!!?

Every time we back up that point you side step it and bring up another issue. Like Ricky Williams. First of all if I smoke pot and then tell me child not to smoke pot that makes me a hypocrite? I guess so. But don’t we learn best from ours and others mistakes? Ricky Williams? Didn’t Mickey Mantle late in his life urge people not to be like him? He was a hero of an entire generation (both blacks and whites).  We’re all human and we all have our flaws, so if we admit them we can teach others not to follow in our troubled footsteps.

Look I think its fair to say that we respect your opinion, we just disagree with it. But it is abundantly clear that you want us to tell you what you want to hear. Believe what you want to believe, in my mind you haven’t made one clear point on how the media is attacking bonds because he is black (besides saying that he is black and the media is attacking him). Sorry, i just don;t see it in any of your arguments.

Race This is the bare bones of it. You are White and I am Black. I don’t see things that you see–or relate to them because I am Black and you should say and see the same. The fact that you said "little or nothing" concerns me. There shouldn’t be ANY. I will speak for the entire Black race that there shouldn’t be ANY from us either. I think you all are missing that when you read my posts. You have made me out to be this under the table, race card playing cat who just can’t see things objectively. I am the disparate. My aim is to help change the media and the way it encapsulates certain athletes. Wunderlic anyone? I’ll bet anyone in here sick amounts of money that Vince Young will be a better pro than Matt and Reggie. Any takers? 🙂 I thank you all for posting. All I ask of all of you is to think about stuff that makes you uncomfortable. I have to do it everyday. Life isn’t fair, I understand that, but do we have to sit on our laurels? Yes, I changed the subject many times, that’s just me as a writer. It took a crazy amount of post for one of you to say that yes Bonds gets racist hate mail. That’s all I was trying to do. Don’t sit there and just see the negatives in my posts. See that I am being objective, but when one of you brings up Colin Montgomerie, I had to expound. I would be a moron to back down from any of you. Ok, we can agree to disagree. Just open your eyes and your minds for the possibility of change, cause it’s coming.

Of course there’s racism You have to be naive to believe that it still doesn’t exist, even in sports. Did you see my post about the soccer fans around the world? There’s a link on the blog – check it out if you haven’t already.

Scrutinizing athletes/public figures is what we all do, right or wrong. The media helps form these opinions for many people. We all should think for ourselves, and I like to think that I do that.

I know I never felt that Jordan was tarnishing his legacy by coming back to play for the Wizards (I believe it was Charles Barkley championing that idea). Anyone who felt that Jordan tarnished it, please refer to Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals.

I just feel that the race card is a cop out with Barry Bonds. T.O. as well. Their criticism is well deserved and I don’t feel that race is the reason these two are hated. Bonds got into bed with the BALCO people, and he should suffer any fallout from this scandal (there is a “stitch of proof” by the way) and T.O might be the worst teammate in sports history. Brett Favre has become just as bad, and the media is coming to realize this. It’s not like he’s been doing this for years, however. It’s just that he stunk it up last year, and he’s obviously past his prime and should hang it up and quit holding the Packers hostage. This being said, it shouldn’t tarnish his image either after he does retire. No, I don’t know these people, but I see/hear what they say with my own two eyes/ears and it’s the opinion I have.

P.S. I will take you up on that Bush/Leinart/Young bet, but I’ll take D’Brickashaw Ferguson as the best player to come out of this draft (it just might take a few years to realize). Reggie Bush will have the most immediate impact, however, due to the fact he’ll play right away while Leinart and Young aren’t guaranteed anything.

Best reply That was the best reply. I ask you though. Regardless of how messed up these athletes are to their sport, do they deserve to be the most hated people in America? You are naive if you don’t think so. Listen, I am not saying this is all about race. I never said that one time. What I did say is that there is this underlying racist element that should not be disregarded. Do I hate Ty Cobb because he was one of the biggest racists? No. He just doesn’t affect me that way. Everyone that has ever existed is allowed to have their own opinion obviously. I just think that the good stories in sports get kicked off the cliff. That just isn’t right. There were many outlets and writers who alluded that Jordan tarnished his image, not just Barkley. As far as Favre and even Marino, they should have bounced from the game at least a year before they did. The SCRUTINY isn’t there as much for Whites. I don’t mean all Whites of course, but for the majority of Blacks. When they mess up a little, it’s made profound, then they are shown the door. TO is a punk, but he commited not one crime against humanity. Artest did what most people would have done in the heat of the momment and he’s ostracized? I don’t get it. I’m getting off the point….What I want to be is different. I’m sorry, but the recycled garbage that gets reported on daily sucks! Why can’t we as writers be more creative? Just because your boy does a story on Barry, do you have to? Aren’t people sick of Bonds, TO, and Artest? I am. I have a different vision for how my career should play out. I want to be a visionary, not ordinary. I’m not calling any of you that posted average. I just want to be extraordinary. Have a nice weekend. Thanks for replying.

oh another thing You are on about Young. No question! What’s the bet? Remember this! There hasn’t been a better big game quarterback to come out of college ever! The fact that people are quick to criticize someone who had not one–but two 200/200 games is crazy to me. Instead the hometown team reups Carr? Wow! Might cost someone his job! Young is different, he’s definitely special and he beat two Heisman trophy winners essentially by himself. Then you get Wunderlic? LOL That’s really funny. Scrutiny. Michigan and USC will never be the same because of one player.

haha… “Artest did what most people would have done in the heat of the momment and he’s ostracized?”

I really, really hope you were kidding. You have to have anger-management problems, not mention be stupid, to do what Artest did. You think most people would jump into a crowd of away fans and start swinging because a soda was thrown at them? Okay, whatever, i just have to really disagree with you there.

artest Maybe in your community you wouldn’t have responded, but in mine most have. Question for you. What about the action that caused the reaction? When is that going to be called into question? What kind of stupidity would actually cause someone to do such a cowardly thing? This is where sports writers contradict themselves. Yes, the story was Artest, granted, but what about the clown? Just because you buy a ticket does NOT mean you can act anyway you want to. People talk all this crap about integrity and then say they can act like immature preschoolers just because they spend MONEY? That is what’s funny here? Are you a Brewers fan? How come Ben and Cecil don’t get more national pub..All I ever hear about that team is Robin and Paul..that’s a travesty. Artest caused the altercation on the court..not the bs in the stands. There is a distinct difference. Recognize it.

TY COBB’s INFLUENCE ON BLACKS. — TY COBB’s INFLUENCE ON BLACKS.

July 25, 2006

Dear Friends:

As I have recognized a need to present facts about Ty’s relationships with blacks, I have enclosed some material that advocates TY COBB’s support for blacks and other minorities. This is to provide facts supporting the reality that the negative publicity came after TY COBB died in 1961. I also enclosed several articles, but interestingly, one that I found where his son, Jim Cobb, made the exact same assessment in 1977.

My friends, if you were to research the facts, you’ll find that Mr. Cobb was different than he is portrayed in the eye of the modern public. He was rich with popularity and writers could always count on his name to generate interest in their newspaper. Mr. Cobb was a charitable natured man who actually was soft for the minority, whether the minority was someone who had different colored skin, or handicapped, or someone who was less fortunate, or even someone who was small in size. He would always tell the little fellow who was standing in the back and could not get close to come to the front. He wanted to make sure they got a chance, too.

In the late 1920’s, TY COBB leased a hunting preserve with over 12,000 acres in MaGruder, Georgia, and built a house on it for a black man, named Uncle Bob Robinson, and his family to live there. In place of the rent, they would make sure no intruders trespassed on the property. Anytime Cobb and his friends were hunting on the land, this fellow, by his own choice, would always hunt along beside COBB. At times, he would entertain the guest with his story telling.

After a long day of hunting, they would gather around a campfire and talk baseball, or whatever came to mind. On this particular day, COBB had bagged twelve birds and had not missed a one (Mr. Cobb was a crack shot). Mr. Robinson told the story to Tris Speaker and the others, “Yeah, Mr. COBB had a bad day today.” What do you mean, Cobb bagged twelve birds and didn’t miss,” said Speaker. “Yeah, but he near `bout missed one,” recounted Mr. Robinson.

Present day authors have distorted COBB’s reputation to a point of the ridiculous. For example, in the book “COBB” that the movie “COBB” was based on tried to show that COBB hosted orgies and drinking parties. I have the contract agreement on the land and it clearly states that there was to be “absolutely NO alcohol on the premises.” This was at Major League Baseball’s Brunswick, Georgia retreat. It was called “Dover Hall Club” and TY COBB was 1/16 part owner of the 2,500 acre hunting and fishing camp. The MLB magnates owned it from the early 1910s until the late 1930s. COBB was the only player of the sixteen investors who bought into the $1,000 stock-leasing plan.

Mr. Cobb was in financial straits in the spring of 1906, but by the end of 1907 he had worked and saved his money. He began investing it in real estate in Georgia. In 1908, he bought 15 acres in Toccoa, Georgia and built and remodeled some of the nicest little homes, in a predominately black neighborhood. He named the subdivision “Booker T. Washington Heights,” and financed these homes to these residents for a minimal amount.

He owned the property until 1940 and he turned it over to his son, Herschel Cobb, to assist him with starting him a Coca-Cola franchise in Idaho. One transaction sold a lot (#22) to J. H. Johnson for only $42.50 in 1909. It was a relatively good price even for that era. There were 109 lots in Booker T. Washington Heights.

I hear a great deal about COBB’s racism in the present, especially on the Internet, but no one ever does or has actually have provided factual or even specifics about their racial allegations. If COBB had been a racist, some newspaperman would have made remarks about the specifics in some way. I have over 40,000 newspaper articles, and NOT one article makes any correlation to TY COBB being a racist. All the evidence demonstrate COBB’s support for the advancement of colored people, and yet, there is NO evidence that give any indication that Mr. COBB made any movement toward oppressing the black population.

Contrary, when Jackie Robinson entered into the Major Leagues, it began a slow process of allowing blacks to began entering into every league in the country. When the Dallas club of the Texas League was considering allowing blacks to enter, COBB was there to bat for them.

Ty Cobb, Fiery Diamond Star, Favors Negroes In Baseball
Independent Journal – January 29th, 1952

MENLO PARK (AP) Tyrus Raymond Cobb, fiery old time star of the diamond, stepped up to the plate today to clout a verbal home run in favor of Negroes in baseball.
Himself a native of the Deep South, Cobb voiced approval of the recent decision of the Dallas club to use Negro players if they came up to Texas league caliber.
The old Georgia Peach of Detroit Tigers fame was a fighter from the word go during his brilliant playing career. He neither asked for nor gave quarter in 24 tumultuous years in the American League. Time has mellowed the one time firebrand and he views the sport in the pleasant role of a country squire. He spoke emphatically on the subject of Negroes in baseball, however.
“Certainly it is O.K. for them to play,” he said, “I see no reason in the world why we shouldn’t compete with colored athletes as long as they conduct themselves with politeness and gentility. Let me say also that no white man has the right to be less of a gentleman than a colored man, in my book that goes not only for baseball but in all walks of life.”
“I like them, (Negro race) personally. When I was little I had a colored mammy. I played with colored children.”
Referring again to last week’s developments in the Texas league, Cobb declared, “It was bound to come.” He meant the breaking down of Baseball’s racial barriers in the old south.
Cobb expressed the belief Negroes eventually would be playing in every league in the country. He concluded with: “Why not, as long as they deport themselves like gentlemen?”

TY COBB did have an altercation with at least four African-Americans during his lifetime, but I have all the documents from these incidents, and in every case, the problem can be traced back to an action, not related to racism, that was committed by COBB himself, the black person, or a third party, that cause the issue to escalate into an altercation. I am not going to discourse tediously on who was at fault in either of the incidents because I only want to exhibit that there was a reason that the incidents happened that had nothing to do with color. And I must mention that COBB’s incidents with whites far exceed the number of occurrences with the blacks.

TY COBB was not a racist, he did not sharpen his spikes to slash other players just to steal a base, he did not kill a man in Detroit as alleged by recent nickel writers, and he did not live the life of a bigot. Contrary to those myths, TY COBB exerted a kindness toward blacks. One of his fondest memories of his youth was being taught how to swim by a black laborer named, Uncle Ezra. Ezra would get young TY to cling to his neck and wade out into the middle of the river or stream. At this point, TY would be released and forced to swim back to the riverbank.

Blacks lived in COBB’s house behind his home on Williams Street there in Augusta. COBB employed blacks the whole time he lived on the “Hill”. Emaline Cosey lived with and worked for TY COBB in 1920.

Jimmy Lanier grew up in Augusta with one of TY COBB’s sons. Jimmy has told a story many times about him and Herschel going to the Rialto Theatre in downtown Augusta to see one of them shoot’em up movies. “We came out of the theatre and Mr. Cobb, like a father, was waiting on the other side of the road,” claimed Lanier. “As we were getting into the car, Mr. Cobb overheard the owner of a nearby restaurant explaining to a man dressed in shabby clothes how to get to the Linwood Hospital – a veterans hospital. Mr. Cobb interrupts and says, `Son, I’ll take you there.’

“The man stood on the running board of Mr. Cobb’s La Salle coupe, and they were talking back and forth, and this man was a veteran of World War I. When they pulled up to the gate at the Linwood Hospital, I saw Mr. Cobb hand this man a $20 bill. Herschel was looking off at somewhere else, but I saw what Mr. Cobb done. It was incidents like this that never made it to the press,” concluded Lanier.

Friends, I believe that one of Mr. Cobb’s problems was that he never looked for credit for anything that he done. He could never boast of his philanthropic nature that would put celebrities like Babe Ruth or Joe DiMaggio riding on the crest of publicity. And two, he never refuted accusation against him publicly. If someone alleged that he had spiked another player intentionally, he gave an explanation only to the person or people that it mattered to most, like owner of the Tigers or President of the American League, but very seldom to the press. If he would have stood up and said to people, “You are wrong” or “That is not true,” maybe these present day authors would have had less room to reinvent his reputation to their own liking.

TY COBB was a close associate to the 2nd Commissioner of baseball, Albert B. “Happy” Chandler, who was head of the baseball realm when Jackie Robinson entered into Major League baseball. COBB was a big supporter of Chandler. In a press interview on August 30tth, 1950, COBB shared his support for Chandler, “So far, Chandler has lived up to everything that I thought he could do as a commissioner. To me, every one of his decisions have been fair.” The article goes on explaining COBB’s support for “Happy.” Three years later, he was elected to serve as member of the Board of Trustees of the COBB Educational Foundation.

The Foundation contributed $2,800.00 in scholarships the first year. Fifty years later the annual grants have reached well over a $500,000 dollars. As of July 2003, the Foundation has provided scholarships to 6,876 students, equaling 9,743,000 dollars.

Thanks to his charitable nature, Ty Cobb has made it possible for thousands of students of Georgia to achieve a higher mark in education. There is no limit to what this Foundation can provide to future students who truly want an education. One thing is certain; it is bound to generate a winning team of students in this great state of Georgia.

And as I mention frequently, I could go on forever talking about great things that Mr. COBB did to enrich the lives of other people. He did this without any expectations from the recipient or others who witnessed his philanthropic deeds. In an interview in the mid 1950s, Mr. COBB made this statement, “You’ve ask me about this Cobb Educational Fund, and now I’m going to have to answer it. I do not wish to be eulogized for what I have done. I’m proud of it, yes. This Educational Fund has given me the greatest possible happiness and pleasure, and maybe when I’m gone we’ll have some real great men developed out of the Cobb Educational Foundation.”

The TY COBB Healthcare Systems, Inc provide jobs to thousands of healthcare professionals in northeast Georgia, and I know personally, and young black fellow that I went to school with who works for the healthcare system and has made a huge impact on the community. He got his start at the COBB Memorial Hospital and now is a providing much leadership in the direction of the city.

TY COBB’s father was a Georgia State Senator from the 31st District who voted against a bill introduced and approved by the Senate that allowed taxes deriving only from black properties to finance the black schools. This was in 1900. He stated in the Atlanta Constitution that the “Negroes had done, and were doing a good deal for the up building of the state, and I am in favor of allowing them money for education.” He believed that the race should be protected from class legislation.
TY COBB set more records in baseball than any other player. He was the first player inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1936. He was the most celebrated athlete in baseball’s history.

In 1950, COBB dedicated the new hospital in Royston, Georgia to provide medical attention to the region. In Dr. J. B. Gilbert, COBB found one of the finest African-American doctors to serve the black population, and this was before desegregation. Dr. Gilbert also serviced white patients and later became Chief of Staff at the COBB Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gilbert’s daughter remembers TY COBB visiting the home when she was just a young lady. COBB signed baseballs for all three of Dr. Gilbert’s grandchildren.

In 1953, COBB established the TY COBB Educational Foundation to give scholarships to needy students in Georgia. Hundreds and hundreds of young black students have become a beneficiary of this educational fund.

Alexander George Washington Rivers was a black employee of COBB for 18 years and named his first-born Ty Cobb Rivers, “Even if it would have been a gal, Ah would have named her the same,” Rivers relayed to his friends in an interview with The Detroit News. Rivers served as COBB’s batboy, chauffer, general handyman, and was an avid supporter of the famed “Georgia Peach.”

After 22 seasons with Detroit, COBB joined the Philadelphia Athletics to finish out his twenty-four year career. Rivers followed COBB, “I wasn’t exactly against the Tigers, but I still had to be for Mr. Ty.”

TY COBB’s racial reputation came only after he had died in 1961. Racial reform should not be fought at the expense of a man who helped make Baseball a great sport for colored people to enjoy, too.

COBB loved Augusta! He did not just live there for a while – it was his home. He raised all of his children there. He lived at 2425 William Street in the Summerville district. He held common and preferred stock in the Augusta Chronicle. He sold Hawkeye trucks there in the Augusta area. He was president and principle owner of the TY COBB Tire Co. on Broad Street. He owned the TY COBB Beverage Co. who had their office at 313 in the Leonard Building. He was one of three principle owners in the City Bank of Thomson. He hunted and fished in all parts of the Augusta area and even down the Savannah River. He was on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank in Lavonia, Georgia for all his professional life.

He coached and umpired some at the Richmond County YMCA and in the Nehi League. He entered his girls into beauty pageants, horse shows and musical recitals. He helped the city authorities host outside guest. When a large group of Philadelphia businessmen came to Augusta, COBB participated in a first-of-its-kind aeroplane golf tournament for the visiting spectators. COBB owned a great deal of property in the city.

One piece of land was 444.72 acres south of Spirit Creek and the Augusta Orphan Asylum. Mr. COBB owned the properties on the east side of Tuttle, between Fenwick and Jenkins Streets; corner of Broad and Seventh (McIntosh); ten acres, five miles out on old Milledgeville Rd.; two lots on the corner of Druid Park and Gwinnett Street; southwest corner of Twiggs and Boyd’s Alley containing five lots; four lots close to the corner of Phillip Street and Walton Way; and the COBB’s property list goes on and on. Looking over the Richmond County Court documents, it appears to me that in some cases COBB loaned money to help prevent foreclosure on some of the properties.

He lived adjacent to a dentist that started the South Atlantic League back up after it shutdown during the depression. Eugene Wilder worked as secretary to the Mayor of Augusta for many years, and was an admirer of COBB’s. When COBB entered the United States Army in 1918, he left Dr. Wilder instructions and money he had set aside for his famous prize dog, “Cobb’s Hall,” in case he failed to return from the war. COBB served as a Captain in the Chemical Warfare Division over in France at the close of the war.

COBB also became part owner of the Augusta Tourist in 1922. The team name was later changed to Augusta Tygers to honor COBB. He developed many young athletes into strong competitors. He managed the Detroit Tigers from 1921-1926, and during that time, a Detroit batter won the batting title 4 out of 6 years. He was a great teacher, and loved to devote his time to helping others advance.

TY COBB was always concerned about the advancement of the city of Augusta. He was always striving to promote and stimulate the city’s economy. He donated his vehicle to the fire station to be auctioned off. He owned numerous businesses in Augusta and drew people of every nature to the city. He once hosted the sole owner of the Diamond Tire Company who came down from up north. There were a couple of Presidents of the United States that COBB became acquainted with on the streets of Augusta.

In closing, I just want to say that all these little things add up to give us plenty of reason to say that COBB deserves being memorialized with a stadium. Especially from his home city, a place that he helped to make a wonderful place to live and work. If the people of Augusta do not want COBB’s name on the Olmstead Stadium, that’s up to them – I don’t live there. But I can’t sit an allow people to say such negative remarks such as “COBB was a racist” without at least trying to educate the public on the absolute truth.

I would hope that if there is this much of an issue in naming the stadium, period, then it might be apprehended that there is a greater force that is calling us to name the facility “COBB MEMORIAL STADIUM,” or something that would commemorate the great Georgia athlete. “GEORGIA PEACH STADIUM” may be a happy medium that would satisfy both sides of the debate.

At any rate, my position is only to educate and pass on the information that is sometimes forgotten or unknown. I hope that I have provided you with enough information that it may give you a different perspective on who TY COBB really was. I have enclosed different passages and material that you can read and see more aspects of TY COBB and his legacy. This is only a speck in the sand of the material that I possess on this great athlete. I would be happy to assist you or your colleagues in any capacity should that be your desire. I hope that you will be enlightened and receptive to this information, and I hope that it will assist everyone in the reconstruction of his or her opinion of TY COBB. I want to leave you with words straight from TY COBB’s own personality, “I like them, personally. When I was little I had a colored Mammy. I played with colored children.”

Sincerely,
Wesley Fricks
TY COBB Historian
