The Rose Bowl which is also known as the National Championship site for this year in college football. And even if you don’t want to face it, you know that you will be seeing the USC Trojans playing the Texas Longhorns in the Rose Bowl this year. Whether you like the way the BCS works, agree with the weakness of schedule these teams have, or just can’t stand either team, there is nothing that you or I can do about it. Just face it, the Trojans and Longhorns will be playing for the national title. Now we just have to decide who we think will win it all. Many of you do not like how USC or maybe even Texas will most likely make it to the title game. Some of you probably are saying that Alabama deserves to be there because the tough schedule they play. Others may say that Miami (Fl.) should be in the Rose Bowl for how they have played lately. Maybe even some think that Penn State were just one second away from being in the National Championship. But no matter what we say, the Trojans and Longhorns will finish undefeated. And maybe they deserve to be in the Rose Bowl and maybe they don’t. We have no say over that.
For the Trojans we have a very highly talented group of athletes. Two of them, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, will be Heisman Trophy candidates. The Trojan offense seems almost unstoppable. If Reggie Bush isn’t making plays running, he’s making plays recieving. If Bush isn’t making plays recieving, he’s making plays running. If the running game isn’t outstanding with Bush and White, Matt Leinart is passing all over the place. May I also mention that Dwayne Jarrett is usually the recipiant of most of Leinart’s passes. Their defense seems to do well even when guys go down, because when guys go down, other guys step up to the challenge.
On the otherhand, we have the Texas Longhorns. The Texas Longhorns are also a group of talented athletes. These guys have another Heisman Trophy candidate on their own team. This Heisman Trophy candidate is the electrifying Vince Young. This kid can get it done by his legs and as we have seen recently, he can get it done by his arm too. Vince Young is also the defending Rose Bowl MVP. In fact, the Texas Longhorns are the defending Rose Bowl Champs. But that definitely isn’t as impressive as USC’s championship title that they are defending. But if Vince Young isn’t getting it done through the air passing, he will get it done on the ground running. If he isn’t getting it done on the ground running, he is getting it done through the air passing. Sometimes or even most the time, Vince Young gets both done. But I can’t forget to mention that the Longorns’ recievers help Young get it done through the air. The Texas Longhorns’ defense as well, keeps their end of the deal, keeping their opponents under control.
As we all know, the Rose Bowl will probably be a high scoring game. In fact, if you turn the game on in the middle of it (I don’t know why you would) and looked at the score right away, you may think you are watching a college basketball game. I definitely think that the MVP of the Rose Bowl, will end up being the Heisman Trophy winner. But assuming these two teams go to the Rose Bowl, the defense that comes to play, will most likely be the x-factor of the game.
If I had to decide who was going to win the game immediately, I would say that USC is outmatched in this one, but I really wouldn’t be sure enough to say so. To tell you the truth, I would probably have to flip a coin to decide who the winner would be. But to sum it up, this year’s Rose Bowl is probably just plainly going to be an exciting shootout.

comment I know I’ve beaten this to death, but I think when USC and Texas meet in the Rose Bowl, USC is going to destroy them and either Leinart or Bush will win MVP, therefore giving them the Heisman. Good point about MVP being Heisman winner though. Very true.
Outmatched?!?!?! USC is going to absolutely whup Texas just like they whupped Oklahoma last year. Texas is the product of the Small 12.
Don’t count your chickens… too early. Even though there is a good chance both will win out, there is possibility that they won’t. I still think USC will lose UCLA and Texas will win out. And just in response to the other comments, if we do have a Texas-USC Rose bowl, texas will win because they have defense which USC doesn’t have. How can USC defend Vince Young?
Texas and Young are my picks. First off all the talk about the winner of the Rose Bowl will contribute to the Heisman Race is ridiculous. Why? Well that would be due to the fact the winner will be announced about 3 weeks before the Rose Bowl is even played. The presentation is Dec 12th, and I believe the Rose Bowl is Jan 4th.
I think its safe to say there is a 99.9% chance that Texas is not going to lose their last 2 games. I would say USC has about a 97% chance of winning out. Fresno State and UCLA could pull off a miralce but its highly unlikely.
As for their respective conferences, they’re both terrible. The Pac 10 as usual plays no defense. I would say that Oregon is respectable. Cal is garbage, and UCLA is highly overrated.
The Big 12 or “small 12” as someone refered to it as is just as bad as the Pac 10 and this year actually worse. Oklahoma had a down year. Nebraska and Colorado still didn’t get their programs on track. Making it a cake walk for the Longhorns this year.
Here is why I like Texas. They have a very good offense and a very good defense. The Trojans have an overall better offense. Although I don’t feel that it is a huge difference. Where there is a huge difference is between their defenses. I feel USC will have no answer for Vince Young on almost any drive.
The Longhorns defense will by far be the best they have faced all year. The Trojans defense will not be the best Texas has seen. I like for it to be high scoring, but think the Longhorns will win by at least 2 TD’s.
How high scoring can we expect? — I was expecting the opening line for the totals to be at something like 87.5, instead it opened at only 71 points! Why so low? Am I missing something? Are these teams gonna play conservatively? I mean the game is bigger for nobody more than the three big offensive players (Young, Leinart, Bush) so it has to be a shoot-out right? Texas’ defence is allowing 14 points per game including against the offence-less teams of Baylor and Kansas and the anemic, momemtum driained Colorado team. They are still 11-0 ATS on the OVER.
This is a potential 90-point game in which every rush “up-the-middle” for less than a 1st down shaves 1.5 points (1 minute) off the board from the 90-point pace.
Help me out here guys, here is what I am anticipating by the Quarter:
Texas….7..14….7…..7 … 35
..USC…10…7…14…14 … 45
Even if we see a repeat from last year in which Texas (as Oklahoma with the easy schedule) gets blown the f*ck out, it’s because A) They can’t move the ball, resulting in a better feild position for USC or 2) Turning it over too often, also resulting in more USC scoring (defensively). But then we could be looking at a 59-14 USC win (IF Texas is held to 14 points).
The way I see it is, the only way this game could go under 71 points is A) We gets multiples “SHOCKS” in which a team has a 1st and Goal from inside the 10 and results in only a FG, or worst, no points or B) The refs have bet heavily on the Under.
If you tell me right now the game will be a close one, the OVER wins! Why? 35-35 tie going into OT, automatic OV, 31-31 tie… with the college format, each team gets a TD and OV wins. Heck, ANY OT wins. So we’ll just assume for argument sakes that the game will not go to OT. So what are your thoughts on the outcome of the game?
