MLB Power Rankings for May 25th- 2006

Although homerun stats have been watered down, Pujols continues a mind-boggling pace. Consider this: five players have hit 60 HR in a season, but only one has knocked in over 190 RBI, even in the recent “steroid-era” of baseball. Albert Pujols is on pace for 82 HR, but more impressive, would be if he could maintain his pace for 203 RBI.

His Cards drop a spot behind the red-hot Tigers, and the only thing keeping the Tigers from climbing on top of the whole sport is reputation. The big question this week is whether or not the Tigers are truly the best team in baseball.

A Sports Medley

by Trevor Freeman

Have you ever had a bad case of writer’s block?  So much so, that it was beginning to affect your overall personality?  All day Sunday I was trying to write a good sports article.  I wrote a bunch of first paragraphs on a variety of topics but could never close the deal.  I was the “buzzed” guy at the bar at 1:00 A.M. who had chatted with five different women during the night, but hadn’t made his move on one and now was desperately trying to salvage some poontang.

Which Sports Fan are you?

This past Tuesday, I had the extreme pleasure of watching my Philadelphia Flyers, in a Philadelphia sports bar, end their season the “right way,” by losing 7-1 to Buffalo. As I sat watching the game, with my hands clenched and my face red, I had time (in between cursing the Flyers during the seven Buffalo goals) to get in some good “people” watching. I know you have heard of “people” watching. It’s the sport of watching people, who watch sports. A sports fan, especially a Philadelphia sports fan, is an interesting person to watch because there are many different categories that the person can fit into.

Justified Dreaming by Matt Waters

I have this English teacher, and against my usual inclination, he got me thinking. Basically, he trashed sports, disregarding them as a mere figment of our imaginations, where life’s very real complications can be broken down into fantasy, where a champion isn’t so much delivered but demanded by a public with nothing else to do.

Better Days By Matt Waters

It really is incredible watch, bearing witness to such a colossal confluence of perfection, momentary as it can be. Length, distance, these are variables often misunderstood when attempting to define the home run’s meaning.

Indeed, it isn’t how far the dinger travels, it’s that moment, where 50,000 people can have their dreams made mutual, where the cascading tidal wave of sound, crashing with equal parts nuance and menace, can overwhelm every single thought that proceeded, and linger in every single second after.

A Low Down- Dirty Shame By Matt Waters

 “I see I said, jealousy I said” – Jay-Z, “It Was All A Dream”

In life, simplicity can rule nothing, which often results in everything. For instance, any trip to the ballpark somehow feels incomplete without the monetary waste accompanying one or more viable trips to the concession stand. However, without that six-dollar coke and seven- buck dog lying securely in both hand and lap, the three-hour vacation at any local Stadium results in an incomplete sonnet, an unfinished memory. Are we foolish for accepting this half-baked barter, memory for money?
