The debate has raged on for years now. Major college sports have become some of the most enjoyable events for spectators, while also providing great opportunities for the athletes who play them. College sports provide drama, tension, produces die-hard loyal fans and of course, who can forget the infamous college football playoff system (aka BCS). It is through college that most student-athletes get the first real opportunity to show their abilities and maybe one day gets drafted professionally for the sport in which they participate. But where is the line drawn for the student-athlete? Why do kids really go to college? For all of my life I always thought the main reason for attending college was to get an education and if you were lucky enough and/or talented enough, you might even get the opportunity to play a sport. Bob Dylan once wrote, “The times they are a changin'” and that quote holds true in this situation. It’s now even being rumored these same student-athletes, who us spectators make into immortals, are now looking to get paid during their tenure at SCHOOL!
What??
Let’s stop right there.
Futile No More
by Matt Wells
There was a time, not too long ago, where we were laughing at the futile efforts that sports teams (of the four major sports) were putting forth on a yearly or even daily basis. We still laugh at some of those teams: the Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Devils Rays, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Texans are just some of the futile teams that come to mind.
In the past decade, we’ve seen some previously futile teams become championship contenders, even if it has been for just a few seasons. The New England Patriots, St. Louis Rams, and Indianapolis Colts (among others) have reached football respectability (the Rams have since fallen off). Baseball has had the turnarounds of the Minnesota Twins (after a poor mid-1990s) and the Chicago White Sox. Hockey has seen teams like the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Calgary Flames, and Tampa Bay Lightning rise to higher ranks. Finally, basketball has seen the Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets climb out of the cellar.

It is widely believed that money gets you beautiful women. So does the status of an athlete for a professional sports team. A fancy sports car might get you a pretty gal on your arm, too. A motorcycle, on the other hand? Well, that will just get deliver trouble.
The new cardinal rule for sports athletes should be this: “When enjoying leisurely activities, stay away from motorcycles. Play golf. Spend time with loved ones. Go swimming. Hang out with friends. But, for the love of God, don’t ride a motorcycle.”
Return of the Avenging Journalist
The question is simple yet seemingly unanswerable. Why, in this hallowed age of High Definition, can’t people see through all the tired, pixilated, hypocritical garbage?
A Sports Medley
by Trevor Freeman
Once again I was the guy wandering the nightclub looking around for stray “tail”. Following “Poor Man’s PTI”, I sat down and tried to compose an article on a variety of topics. First paragraphs were easy on Big Ben, J.J., D-Wade, and the NBA Draft. However, I ran into a brick wall every time I tried to add some meat to the story. Yes, writer’s block was affecting me and there was only one way to snap out of it. Without further ado……..here are ten thoughts on the world of Sports.
Some Friendly Advice
I thought there were many interesting stories this week in sports and I figured I would chip in my two-cents. They are arranged in order from least important to most important (in my opinion).
