The other side of the Kentucky Derby

It’s hard to believe only eight years ago Charismatic took 31-1 odds into the gate and emerged as the Kentucky Derby champion. And two weeks later, he took 8-1 odds and won the Preakness.

Sadly, the colt broke his leg in the stretch in his next race, the Belmont Stakes, finishing a close third, and was thus denied being the first Triple Crown winner in 21 years.

Lessons from Bluffton

Until a month ago, I had never heard of Bluffton University, a tiny Mennonite liberal arts college of less than 1200 students in the northwest Ohio town of the same name and just as obscure.

And in a couple months, I won’t even remember the name. But right now, it’s a story we can all learn from.

The Final Furlong

For those of you unfamiliar with the MLL (Major League Lacrosse), it is the premier outdoor lacrosse league in the US. It started in 2001 by founder Jake Steinfeld, owner of Body by Jake. The league currently has 2 conferences (Eastern and Western) with 10 teams. In the Eastern Conference the teams are the Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, New Jersey Pride, Philadelphia Barrage (defending 2006 Steinfeld Cup Champion), Rochester Rattlers, and the Washinton Bayhawks. The Western Conference Teams are the Denver Outlaws, Chicago Machine, San Francisco Dragons, and the Los Angeles Riptide. There are 12 games in a season. Now that you have a little knowledge about the MLL, here is my 2007 season preview.

Gentlemen- Start Your Blenders… er- Engines

By Ryan McGowan

On Sunday afternoon, I rediscovered my Southern roots.

OK, I lied.  I was born in Rhode Island and grew up in Massachusetts.  I fit in south of the Mason-Dixon line about as easily as Charlton Heston at a vegan convention.  But for one day, I was Southern.

How NOT to Win an Eclipse Award

Sometimes no matter how good you are, winning a year-end award is out of your control.  In this case, Lava Man, the best horse on the west coast, loses one race out of eight, all Stakes races, and isn’t even a finalist for Horse of the Year.

Predicting the Tour de France has been pretty boring over the past few years. This year, however, without a certain Texan, the field is wide open. A look at the contenders:
