Who Won And Lost In This Year’s NBA Draft

by Trevor Freeman

Pizza or Tacos………Tacos.  Yuengling, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Natty Light……Natty Light.  You gotta go Old School for an event like this.  Golden State Warrior Throwback jersey or Boom Dizzle Warriors Jersey…….Boom Dizzle.  Are there better “drinking” sporting events than the NFL and NBA Drafts?  A couple minutes to pee between picks and grab snacks.  No pressure to pay complete attention.  Mel Kiper and Jay Bilas squaring off to see who can be the bigger sports nerd.  Pro and college intersecting to form a perfect union.

There are many recaps you can read on this wonderful event.  Just know that every other writer you will read was completely sober when they wrote their recap.  Not only could I not operate heavy machinery at this moment, but I am having problems getting the mouse to work correctly on my mousepad.  That speaks volumes about how much I care about covering this event.  We begin our look at the draft with………

Our Look At The NBA Draft

by Trevor Freeman

So I’m at Pat O’Brien’s and I’m playing a little Beirut.  In walk some kids who look to be fresh out of college and eventually my group engages them in some friendly “Beirut” banter.  In my first game against a solid twosome, I offer a “we’re playing 21 cups” in a cocky manner.  Being a veteran I felt that my experience would better translate in a 21 cup game.  The youth responded, “No problem, old-timer”.  The game begins and me and my partner who are both staring 30 in the eye got off to a great start and held on for a close win.  Following this we played two more games and the college kids whupped us.  What does this have to do with the NBA Draft?  Nothing really…….well except for the fact that there are a bunch of young kids about to put a whupping on some veterans.

People look at this draft as being all about Kevin Durant and Greg Oden.  However there are some nice value plays in here as I think both Al Horford and Corey Brewer will be big-time contributors.

Cleveland – San Antonio Series — Youth vs. Experience

The NBA Finals features two teams with many similarities. First, you have teacher Greg Popovich and his student, Mike Brown, former assistant under Pop in San Antonio. Brown and Cleveland General Manager Danny Ferry, who was an executive with San Antonio before landing in Ohio, have tried to mold the Cavs in the shape of the Spurs.

Defense is the name of the game for both teams with the Spurs ranking second in the league in defensive efficiency with the Cavs not far behind at fourth. Offensive efficiency is where San Antonio has a significant edge over Cleveland.

Lebron Jordan

Now that the world is back to spinning on it’s axis and Lebron James is slowly coming down off his high from getting to the Finals, we can clarify some things. First and foremost, Lebron James is STILL not Michael Jordan. He’s not even Kobe Bryant. Granted, what he did against Detroit and throughout the playoffs was unbelievable, and downright special, but it wasn’t Michael. It was, well, what we expected. You cannot bring this much hype to the table as the so-called “face of the NBA” and not win some playoffs series or get to the final series. And yes, Kevin Garnett, that means up until now your career and all of it’s accomplishments mean nothing. But really, to take that next step, Lebron needs to win the whole thing. Not next year. Not in three years. This year. The difference between Jordan or Kobe and James? Not that James has never won a title, more, the other two guys never lost one.

NBA Draft Preview

The NBA Draft is soon approaching, and if you ask me, is not getting the attention it deserves. Sure, there’s the top two that everyone is talking about: Oden and Durant. But after them, a lot of these players are going unnoticed or flying way too far under the radar. I have taken it upon myself to enlighten the public on what players should be drafted this year. One thing I refuse to do, unlike NBA GM’s, is fill the end of the second round with European project players. Each player at each pick is a player that truly deserves to be there.

The Scapegoat

It happened again. Steve Nash and the Sun’s elimination from the playoffs produced a nation-wide question: Why doesn’t Nash, a two time MVP, get blamed when his team loses early? Well, that is not only a stupid question; it is an easily answered one. First, last season wasn’t Nash’s fault. They didn’t have Amare, and last I checked they still did pretty damn good. Second, this season was Robert Horry’s fault. He single handedly gave the Suns their exit tickets, and you can thank the NBA for that. The suspensions of Stoudamire and Diaw were ridiculous. But I don’t want to focus on the Suns. I don’t want to take it one step further and say,” Nash? What about Shaq and D-Wade?” I don’t even want to begin to dissect the many reasons why those two stars were heavily responsible for a drastic collapse and sweep by the hands of the younger Chicago Bulls. Wait, yes I do.

Sunday Night Lights

It’s a breezy Sunday afternoon on the basketball courts of Valle Verde 5 and the familiar sound of the ball bouncing on the parquet floor reverberates in the surrounding areas of the park. Inside the grounds, the court is littered with men in sneakers and basketball jerseys. On one bench, one player is doing his stretching. On the other bench, another one is lacing up his sneakers. On the other end of the court, two players take turns hoisting up 30 foot three-pointers. In the distance, another two are engaging in NBA small-talk.

The NBA Needs A Leader

by Trevor Freeman

My biggest objection with Amare Stoudamire and Boris Diaw being suspended for Game 5 was not the complete injustice of it.  And that is saying an awful lot because the fairness of David Stern’s decision to suspend the two of them was only a slight notch below Vince McMahon forcing Bobby Lashley to have to defend his ECW title against him, Shane McMahon and Umaga in a handicap match on the last pay-per view.  My beef with the commissioner lies in the absolute lack of testicular fortitude he put on display when he cancelled his scheduled appearance in Phoenix after making the suspension decision.

This is not the first time David Stern has shown that he is an incompetent twit who may also be smuggling a pair of raisins under his boxer shorts.  Let’s take a quick look at some of the other “moves” he has made over the past fifteen years that have helped the NBA get passed by the NFL as the premier professional sports league in our country.

The Warriors Come out to Play- and Help Basketball in the Process

I’ll admit before I begin that I don’t have a tremendous amount of connections to the Bay Area. A few of my friends live there, sure – but can’t everyone say that? I’ve developed a drinking buddy as a result of the area’s pro hockey team, as detailed in my post about San Jose’s demise in these NHL playoffs. One time, as I wrote on Larry Brown Sports, I went out there to visit a girl with the full intention of something physical happened; I think that might have died when we checked into a hotel and she said “separate beds.” Or perhaps it was six hours later, when she started making out with another guy at a bar we were at.

True Warriors

I will go ahead and eat some crow for what I said about the Golden State Warriors.  I, like 95% of basketball fans, totally wrote them off of even winning a game in this series.  When they win game 6 and win this series, it will be even more of a reason to totally disregard the NBA regular season.  I can’t remember the last time I had more fun watching a series.  To be perfectly honest, I have only kept track of one other series so far this year, the Suns and Lakers.  But the past week and half, especially after the game 1 shocker, I have completely built my life around when the next game of this series is.
