The 60th Anniversary of an American Hero

He was a black man, living in a white world. A time when the sky was blue, the grass was green, and everything else was white. He had to witness things during that time when racism was at its peak and stirring out of control. Everyday he had to listen to racial slurs being thrown at him, not being able to go to certain places because of his skin color, death threats, you name it the list goes on and on.There was one thing that this man wanted more than anything in life and would not stop until he achieved that dream. That dream was; acceptance. April 15, 2007 marked the 60th anniversary of the day Jackie Robinson broke not only baseball’s color barrier, but this country’s. He not only changed the way we look at sports, he changed the way we look at life.

It’s Anybody’s Game

Another NBA regular season has come to a close, which means we only have five more months until we can get some football actions.  The 2006-07 NBA regular season was definitely one to be remembered.  But this year’s cast of playoff participants should make for an even better postseason.  Once again we have a couple of new faces in the picture as Don “Nelly” Nelson led his Golden State Warrior team to the playoffs after a 13 year hiatus.  While the Orlando Magic snap a 4 year playoff drought as they reach the postseason.  The rest of the cast remained pretty much the same.  In the East, the Detroit Pistons, the Cleveland LeBron’s /Cavaliers, the new and improved Toronto Raptors, the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Wizards, the New Jersey Nets, and the defending champion Miami Heat.  Out in the West, the juggernaut Dallas Mavericks, the Phoenix Suns, the overlooked Houston Rockets, the Utah Jazz, the San Antonio Spurs, the up and coming Denver Nuggets, and the Los Angeles Kobes.

Is Mel Kiper’s Hair Ready?

by Trevor Freeman

Is it just me or is the time between the day March Madness ends and the day the NBA playoffs/NFL Draft begins just excruciating? Last weekend I actually did household chores. I did. I swear to God. I even figured out how to get the vacuum cleaner to work. It gets worse. I rolled up my sleeves and cleaned the bathroom. I think the advent of Spring Cleaning can be directly attributed to the lack of sports once March Madness ends.

With that being said, the NFL Draft is only a week away and its time to get the engine fired up again. There are not many events I like watching better than this one. Watching Mel Kiper get all hot and bothered talking about some guy from Sam Houston State brings an indescribable amount of enjoyment to my life. Plus, is there any event better to watch at a bar than the NFL Draft? You don’t have to keep your eyes on the television as long as the ears are tuned in. God bless this event.

Extensive NBA Playoff Preview

By David J. Cohen

It’s time for the NBA playoffs. This year is especially good, with storylines all over the place. I can’t remember a playoff year in the NBA with so much intrigue in the opening round.

Here’s how the Eastern Conference should play out.

2007 NBA Playoff Predictions

Once again, I am mostly a baseball guy, but I’m a Sportscenter addict. I follow it like a religion. Plus my hometown Warriors are finally in the playoffs, so I’ve been inspired to take a stab at prediction this year’s NBA playoffs. And no matter what you think of my predictions, I guarantee they will be less annoying than anything Stephen A. Smith says.

Just something I wrote on the Virginia Tech shootings. I wish I had more of an intro, but it was hard enough writing this….

Friday Free for All: Philly frustration

Back in August, I started the Friday Free For All to get back into writing feature length columns, but like smart Charlie Manuel managerial moves, they were few and far between. But I’m ready to make a comeback. (Yes, folks, you are witnessing the most unasked for comeback since Winger released Headed for a Heartbreak.) So here it is, the first Friday Free for All of 2007, equal parts sports, angst, and anti-starfucking.

A Lot to Live Up to (NBA Playoffs Preview)

It’s the First Round of the NBA Playoffs. All you need is 16 more victories and you are the NBA Champions. To be honest, I would settle for half as good of playoffs from last year. However, the way things shook up on the last night, you never know, we may be in store for some good match-ups.

Man did the Bulls blow it or what? Before game #82, they were the two seed looking at Washington in the First Round and then the winner of New Jersey/Toronto. It is a cakewalk to the Conference Finals. Nope, sorry, they couldn’t take care of the Nets on their home floor, and they get Miami, and then Detroit. If they beat Miami of course. How about those Warriors? Nellie’s old team versus his new team… I predict a lot of scoring. Here is the series breakdown and predictions for Round 1 of the NBA Playoffs.

What Boston Celtics Will We See Next Year?

by: Kyle Benson

Its the 2nd year in a row the Celtics have missed the playoffs. What has happened to this storied franchise? 16 NBA championships all time, but they can’t make it into the playoffs two years in a row. Even though they are one of the worst teams in the league, ending the season with a horrid record of 25-57, star players Paul Pierce and Al Jefferson have guaranteed the playoffs for the 2007-2008 season. So what I’m asking myself is, what Celtics will we see next year, the dynasty from the 80’s, or the car crash of the 2000’s?

MLB Power Rankings for April 18- 2007

Two weeks into the baseball season and the rankings are looking awfully similar to what they were last year. The Braves still have the best record in baseball, so I’m finally ready to admit that they belong in the top ten, and with the Yankees pitching woes they’ve fallen from the top spot.

On the other hand the Phillies continue to look like an overpaid AAA team and their 200 year-old manager is challenging talk show hosts to a round in the octagon. And over in Chicago another rampaging manager and a no-hitter can’t prevent the Cubs and Sox from free-falling.

On the injury front, it seems every other marquee pitcher in the game is missing games because of an elbow or shoulder problem. Chris Carpenter, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, Rich Harden, BJ Ryan and Felix Hernandez are all looking at an indefinite spell on the injured list. On the other hand, it seems Chien-Ming Wang and Randy Johnson should be returning soon.
