Regarding Sean Taylor: I Have My Answer

It’s been 60+ hours since word came that Sean Taylor had passed.  When I first heard of the shooting, I did not think of death as the eventual outcome.  When news trickled out about the severity of the injury, I was surprised.  Soon, Sean Taylor was lost.

The Inspiration called Virginia Tech

Living overseas, I’m only exposed to the main sports headlines and whatever they decide to talk about on the games I’m lucky enough to see.  Today, watching Virginia Tech beat Boston College for the ACC title and a birth in the Orange Bowl, I’ve been struck by the lack of talk about the one thing that was on most of our minds back in September when the season started, the drama of the Virginia Tech campus shooting.

Driving to an End: NASCAR’s Impact on the Environment

I hate NASCAR.  Hate it.  I can see cars driving anywhere and at any time.  The last thing I want to do is watch 500 miles of it on a track that goes nowhere.  Yes, I have heard it all, “It’s the environment and the people surrounding the race”, and “THEY ARE JUST SO FAST, IT’S AWESOME”.  I get it.  Not to knock these…drivers?  I certainly can’t call them athletes, though what they do is very dangerous.  But I just feel that it takes no athletic skill to drive a car at high speeds.  Maybe I just haven’t done it, but I feel that it has more to do with mental awareness and attentiveness.

The Risk of Not Taking Risks

Last week the Washington Redskins faced off against the NFC leading Cowboys. The Redskins lost. This was not a surprise. The Cowboys were clear favorites. Terrell Owens scored four touchdowns. The Redskins were missing Sean Taylor. This was a game the Redskins were supposed to lose. Something surprising happened last Sunday afternoon though. The Redskins should have won the game.

Despite troubles in the secondary and a career game from TO, the Redskins should have won. They were in position to do so and I am not referring to only the final couple drives where all the pressure was on Jason Campbell to deliver in the most difficult of situations. Admittedly, Campbell came up short at the end of the best game of his young career. However, it was Joe Gibbs and his staff who put Campbell in the position to fail.

Bobby’s Year?

Bobby Abreu must be used to living in other people’s shadows. After all, he stands in them every time he takes the field at Yankee Stadium.

And even when he’s on the bench in the shade of the dugout with his pinstriped teammates, he’s still considered to be ‘under the radar’.

The featured games this week are Packers @ Cowboys, Jaguars @ Colts, Chargers @ Chiefs, and Seahawks @ Eagles. You can download the podcast directly (running time 60 mins) or subscribe to the feed.

Do they deserve it?

In Baseball, the Hall of Fame is where you separate the good from the great. There are players who feel that they deserve to get in, but their career stats just don’t scream Hall of Fame.  For the Hall of Fame in 2008, there are many players who want to get in, but do they deserve to become a member of the greatest team in baseball history?

Salukis look to ride their defense deep into this year’s NCAA tournament

Over the past few years, the Southern Illinois Salukis have become a reoccurring member of March Madness. Not only do the Salukis take their gritty defensive game into the tournament year after year, but they usually hang around in March, and they drive opponents crazy.

Football..Be Not Proud

And the Devil did grin, for his darling sin is pride that apes humility. – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

There is a reason why pride is considered the deadliest of the seven Cardinal sins.  Pride causes us to overestimate our abilities and will blur our personal boundaries.  Pride will swell our ego and make us believe things that, in humbler times, we know aren’t so.  Pride will take us down a rocky path of failure, to attempt things that cannot be done.

Week 13 NFL Power Rankings

It’s getting to the point where any team can win any game in today’s NFL. Sure, that has always been the case, but it’s different now. The Patriot’s are nearly a given to win every week, and teams like the Packers and Cowboys, and even the depleted Colts, are heavy favorites going into their contests. But outside of them, it’s fair game.

This week we saw multiple overtime games, crazy endings, and some players who have been down and almost ruled out for some time, surge back into our thoughts. Those players undoubtedly found themselves a place on someone’s fantasy football team, as well, but also found a way to move their squad a spot or two up in this week’s power rankings.
